Glass door dropped and dragging on the floor
A frameless glass door that scrapes the floor has usually dropped at one corner: the top pivot has worn, the bottom patch fitting has slipped on the glass, or the floor spring has sunk in its box. Re-hanging with a new pivot or fitting fixes most; a sunken spring is reset or replaced.

The sound gives it away: a scrape as the door swings, and a pale arc of scratches on the marble or vitrified tiles. In offices and showrooms across Gurugram, a dragging glass door is one of the most common call-outs, and it's worth fixing early, because a door that grinds against the floor also loads its bottom corner, and the corners are where toughened glass is weakest.
How a frameless door is held up
A frameless glass door hangs on two points. At the bottom, a patch fitting is clamped onto the glass and sits on the spindle of the floor spring. At the top, a second patch fitting carries a top pivot pin that drops into a socket in the ceiling, the transom glass or a head channel. The door's weight sits on the floor spring; the top pivot keeps it upright. If either point moves, the door leans and its free corner drops.
Why the door has dropped, most likely first
Top pivot worn or loose
The pin or its bush wears, or the socket's screws loosen in a false ceiling. The door tips outward at the top and its far bottom corner drops. Sign: the gap at the top of the door is uneven, wider at the hinge side or the lock side.
Bottom patch fitting slipped on the glass
Patch fittings grip the glass with screws and gaskets. If the gaskets have compressed or the clamp screws have backed off, the glass slides down inside the fitting. Sign: the glass sits lower inside its bottom fitting than at the top, and the door is low along its whole width.
Floor spring sunk or tilted in its box
Floor springs are bedded in a steel cement box. If the box was poorly grouted, or water from mopping has rusted the base, the unit can settle or tilt. Sign: the cover plate sits lower than the floor or is no longer flush, and the door is low at the hinge side.
The floor has changed
A new floor finish, a raised threshold strip or a lifted tile can make a door that was fine start to scrape. Sign: the scratch arc starts at one tile only.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Gap at the top of the door is uneven | Worn or loose top pivot | Re-fix or replace the pivot |
| Glass sits low inside its bottom fitting | Patch fitting slipped | Re-clamp with new gaskets or replace fitting |
| Floor cover plate sunk or rusty | Floor spring settled in its box | Reset level, or replace the floor spring |
| Scrapes on one tile only | Raised tile or threshold | Re-level the floor, or raise the door slightly |
Checks that are safe to do
- Look at the gap between the door and the fixed glass from top to bottom. A wedge-shaped gap means the door is leaning.
- Compare where the glass edge sits inside the top and bottom patch fittings.
- Check the floor cover plate is flush with the tiles and not rusty or wet.
- Lift the door handle very slightly while opening: if the scraping stops, the door has dropped rather than the floor having risen.
What the repair involves
Most dropped doors are fixed by supporting the glass, re-hanging it at the right height and replacing the worn part: a top pivot, a set of patch fitting gaskets, or a whole fitting. If the floor spring itself has settled or rusted, the unit is reset in its box or replaced through a glass door floor machine repair. The door is then trued up so the gaps match and it closes without rubbing.
Quoting starts on WhatsApp, not with a paid visit. Send a photo of the floor plate, one of the top pivot, and a video of the door scraping. Because repairs have no fixed rate, the quote depends on which parts are worn and how the top pivot is mounted.
If the dragging has already chipped the glass, look closely at the bottom corner. A chip on toughened glass means the panel usually needs replacing, as the broken toughened glass replacement page explains, because tempered glass can't be ground or re-cut.
Preventing a repeat
- Keep the floor box dry; rust is what lets a spring settle.
- Have patch fitting screws checked if the door gets heavy use.
- Don't hang bags or hooks on the door handle; it adds load to the top pivot.
A dropped door often also stops closing properly or its lock stops lining up; see glass door not closing and glass door lock not working. Common questions
Why is my glass door scraping the floor?
The door has usually dropped at one corner. The commonest causes are a worn top pivot, a bottom patch fitting that has slipped down the glass, or a floor spring that has settled in its box. Less often a new tile or threshold is simply higher than before.
Can a dragging glass door break?
It can. Dragging loads the bottom corner of the glass, and toughened glass is weakest at its edges and corners. A chip there can make the whole door shatter. It's better to have the door re-hung before the corner is damaged.
How is a dropped glass door fixed?
The door is supported, lifted off its spindle and re-hung at the right height, with the worn part replaced: the top pivot, the patch fitting gaskets or the fitting itself. If the floor spring has sunk or rusted, it's reset or replaced.
Glass door zameen se ragad raha hai, kya khud theek kar sakte hain?
Please don't. The door is heavy, the floor spring is under load, and toughened glass can shatter if its edge is knocked while you're adjusting it. Send a photo of the floor plate and a short video on WhatsApp instead and we'll tell you what's needed.
Do I need a site visit for a dropped glass door?
No. Repairs are quoted from photos and videos on WhatsApp, without the paid visit that new installation work needs. Send a photo of the floor cover plate, one of the top pivot and a short clip of the door scraping as it swings. That's usually enough to see which part has worn and quote the re-hang.
