Shower door hinge stuck, stiff or squeaking
A stiff or stuck shower door hinge is usually clogged with hard-water scale, corroding inside (common with lower-grade metal), or binding because the door has sagged. Cleaning and re-setting sometimes frees it; a seized or rusted hinge is replaced with a matching chrome hinge.

Shower hinges have a hard life: hot water, soap, shampoo and, across most of Gurugram, hard water that leaves chalky deposits on everything it touches. A hinge that used to swing smoothly and close the door by itself can, within a few years, become stiff, gritty, squeaky or stuck at one angle. The good news is that the glass is almost never the problem, and the fix is usually a bathroom glass door hinge replacement.
Which hinge do you have?
It helps to know what's on your door. Wall-to-glass hinges fix to the tiles on one side and clamp the glass on the other. Glass-to-glass hinges (usually 180 degree in a straight run, 90 or 135 degree in a corner enclosure) join the door to a fixed panel. Many shower hinges are self-closing: a cam inside lifts the door slightly as it opens, so it falls back to closed and holds there. That cam is also what jams first.
Why the hinge has stuck, most likely first
Hard-water scale inside the hinge
Water that gets into the pivot evaporates and leaves calcium and magnesium deposits. Layer by layer, they gum up the cam and the pin. Signs: white crust around the hinge joint, a gritty feel, and stiffness that has built up slowly.
Corrosion inside a lower-grade hinge
Hinges that are chrome-plated over a lower-grade base metal, or plated poorly, can rust or pit inside even if they look fine outside. Signs: brown streaks running down from the hinge, flaking chrome, a squeak that won't go.
The door has sagged and is binding
If the door has dropped in its hinges, the hinges are no longer in line, and they twist against each other as the door moves. Signs: the door rubs the floor or seal, and stiffness came on fairly suddenly. See shower door sagging.
The self-closing cam is worn or broken
The door swings freely but no longer returns to closed, or it stops at a random angle. The cam inside has worn or cracked.
Over-tight clamp screws
If someone has over-tightened the hinge clamp on the glass, the hinge body can distort slightly and bind. This often follows a DIY fix.
| What you notice | Probable cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| White crust, stiffness built up slowly | Hard-water scale | Descale gently; replace if seized |
| Brown streaks, flaking chrome | Corrosion inside the hinge | Replace the hinge |
| Door rubs and got stiff suddenly | Door sagged, hinges out of line | Re-set door, new gaskets or hinges |
| Swings freely but won't self-close | Worn or broken cam | Replace the hinge |
| Stiff after someone tightened it | Hinge body distorted | Re-fit or replace |
What you can safely try
- Wipe the hinge with a cloth soaked in diluted white vinegar, leave it a few minutes, then rinse and dry. This softens light scale on the outside.
- Open and close the door slowly through its full swing a few times afterwards.
- Check whether the door rubs the floor or seal anywhere.
- Look for brown rust streaks below the hinge.
What the repair involves, and how it's quoted
If the door is level and the hinge is only lightly scaled, a careful clean can bring it back. In most cases where the hinge has been stiff for a while, the cam is worn or the inside has corroded, and the hinge is replaced. The door is supported, one hinge is swapped at a time with new gaskets, and the door is set to swing evenly and meet its seals. Where possible the new hinge matches the old one's type and hole positions, so the glass doesn't need re-drilling (toughened glass can't be drilled after tempering).
No paid site visit is needed for repairs. Send a close photo of each hinge, a photo of the whole door and a short video of it moving on WhatsApp. There's no published rate for hinge work because the hinge type, the count and the door size change the job, so the quote follows the photos.
How to keep hinges moving
- Squeegee or wipe the door after showers so water doesn't sit in the hinges.
- Clean hinges with mild, non-acidic cleaner or diluted vinegar, then rinse and dry.
- Ventilate the bathroom so humidity clears quickly.
- On a new enclosure, choose good-quality SS304 hardware rather than cheaper plated fittings.
Scale on the glass itself is covered in hard water stains on shower glass, and leaks in shower door leaking. If you're replacing the enclosure, look at the frameless shower partition with door or the L-shape frameless shower enclosure with door. The glass repair catalogue, our glass door and partition repair guide and glass repairs in Noida cover the rest. A clear photo of the hinge on WhatsApp is the place to start.
Common questions
Why is my shower door hinge so stiff?
Usually hard-water scale has built up inside the pivot, or the hinge is corroding inside. If the stiffness came on suddenly, the door may have sagged so the hinges are out of line and binding. Each needs a different fix, which photos usually make clear.
Can I use WD-40 or oil on a shower door hinge?
It's better not to. Oil and spray lubricants attract soap scum and grit in a wet room, which makes the hinge stiffer later. Gentle descaling with diluted vinegar, then rinsing and drying, is safer. A hinge that has seized or corroded inside is usually replaced.
Shower door ka hinge jam ho gaya hai, kya sirf hinge badal sakte hain?
Yes. In most cases the hinge can be replaced without touching the glass, using a hinge that matches the existing holes or notches. Send clear photos of the hinge and the whole door on WhatsApp so we can identify the type.
Why won't my shower door close by itself anymore?
Self-closing shower hinges use a small cam that lifts the door as it opens and lets it fall back closed. When that cam wears, breaks or gets scaled up, the door stays where you leave it. The fix is usually a new hinge.
Do you need to visit to replace a shower door hinge?
No paid site visit is needed for repairs. Photos and a short video on WhatsApp are usually enough to quote hinge work: a close-up of each hinge, a photo of the whole door and a clip of it swinging. From those we can identify the hinge type and whether the door has sagged as well.
