Hard water stains on shower glass: removing and preventing them

White spots and haze on shower glass are usually calcium and magnesium left behind as hard water dries. Fresh deposits come off with diluted white vinegar or a citric-acid solution and a soft cloth. Deposits left for years can etch the surface, and etching can't be cleaned off.

Updated Gurugram & Noida

Frameless bathroom glass partition where hard-water spots build up

Groundwater across much of Gurugram, and in many Noida sectors too, is hard: it carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Every time shower water dries on the glass, it leaves a thin film of those minerals behind. A few weeks in, the glass looks spotty; a few months in, it looks frosted. This page covers what actually removes it, what damages glass and fittings, and when the glass is past cleaning.

The short answer

Mineral scale is alkaline, so a mild acid dissolves it. Diluted white vinegar or a citric acid solution, left on for a few minutes and wiped with a soft cloth or non-scratch sponge, removes most fresh deposits. Then rinse with clean water and dry. Daily squeegeeing stops it coming back.

Is it scale, soap scum or etching?

Not every cloudy shower screen is the same problem, and the fix depends on which one you have.

Hard-water scale (most common)

White, chalky spots and drip lines, worst at the bottom of the glass and around the hinges. Feels slightly rough. Comes off with mild acid.

Soap scum

A greasy, greyish film where soap and shampoo splash. Often mixed with scale. Responds to a mild detergent first, then the vinegar treatment.

Etching

If deposits have sat on the glass for years, the minerals can chemically attack the surface. The glass looks cloudy even when perfectly clean and dry, and the cloudiness doesn't change when wet. Etching is damage to the glass itself and won't come off with cleaning.

Water marks inside a laminated or coated glass

Rare in shower partitions, but cloudiness that seems to sit inside the glass, not on it, isn't something cleaning can reach.

How to clean it safely

  1. Mix white vinegar and warm water roughly half and half (or dissolve citric acid in warm water).
  2. Spray or wipe it on, and leave it for five to ten minutes. For stubborn patches, lay a soaked cloth on the glass.
  3. Wipe with a soft microfibre cloth or a non-scratch sponge.
  4. Rinse with clean water, then dry with a squeegee and a dry cloth.
  5. Repeat over a few days rather than scrubbing hard on one.

What we can help with

We don't sell a glass-cleaning service, and for scale you don't need one. Where we come in is when hard water has done damage. Scale often seizes self-closing hinges, which is fixed with a bathroom glass door hinge replacement. And if a panel is badly etched or has been scratched by abrasive cleaning, it can be replaced like-for-like through a broken toughened glass replacement. Toughened glass is made to size, so a replacement panel generally takes 7 to 10 days to produce.

For either, send photos of the glass (in daylight, dry) and of the hinges on WhatsApp. Repairs don't require a paid site visit, and because they have no published rate, the quote depends on the panel size and the hardware.

How to stop it coming back

  • Squeegee the glass after every shower. It takes thirty seconds and removes most of the water before it can dry into spots.
  • Leave the door open or the exhaust fan on so the bathroom dries quickly.
  • Point the shower head at the wall, not the glass.
  • A water softener on the bathroom supply reduces scale everywhere, including taps and shower heads.
  • Hydrophobic glass coatings make water bead and run off; they help, but still need squeegeeing.

If scale has stiffened your hinges, see shower door hinge stuck; if water is escaping the enclosure, see shower door leaking. If you're starting over with a new screen, the frameless shower partition with door is the most common choice. All repairs sit in the glass repair catalogue, with local detail on glass repairs in Gurgaon and in our glass door and partition repair guide. For damage beyond cleaning, send photos on WhatsApp.

Common questions

How do I remove hard water stains from shower glass?

Use diluted white vinegar or a citric-acid solution, leave it on for five to ten minutes, wipe with a soft cloth or non-scratch sponge, rinse and dry. Repeat over several days for heavy build-up rather than scrubbing hard, which can scratch the glass.

Why won't the white marks come off my shower glass?

If the glass stays cloudy even when clean and dry, the hard water has probably etched the surface after years of build-up. Etching is damage to the glass itself, so cleaning won't remove it. A badly etched panel can be replaced if it bothers you.

Shower glass pe safed daag kaise hatayein?

White vinegar mixed with warm water works well for fresh marks. Leave it on a few minutes, wipe with a soft cloth, rinse and dry. Don't use steel wool or toilet cleaner, which scratch the glass and damage the chrome fittings.

Is it safe to use toilet cleaner or acid on shower glass?

It's best not to. Strong acid cleaners can damage chrome hinges and handles, weaken silicone seals and are harsh on skin. Mild vinegar or citric acid does the job on glass without those risks; rinse the fittings with clean water afterwards.

How do I stop hard water spots coming back?

Squeegee the glass after every shower so water doesn't dry on it, ventilate the bathroom, and keep the shower head pointed at the wall. A water softener or a hydrophobic glass coating helps further, but neither replaces the daily squeegee.
