Broken glass replacement · Gurgaon & Noida

Toughened glass shattered suddenly: why it happens and what to do

Toughened glass that shatters 'by itself' has usually been damaged earlier, often a small chip on an edge, or has a tiny nickel sulphide inclusion that expands over time. Stress from tight fittings or uneven heat can trigger it too. The panel can't be repaired; it's replaced with new toughened glass made to size.

Shattered toughened glass panel awaiting replacement

It's alarming: a loud bang, and a shower screen, cabin door or shopfront panel is suddenly a crazed web of small cubes, sometimes in the middle of the night with no one near it. This does happen to toughened (tempered) glass, in Gurugram flats and offices as anywhere else, and there's almost always a physical reason, even if the trigger was weeks or months earlier.

First: make it safe

  1. Keep everyone, especially children and pets, away. Shut the bathroom or cordon off the area.
  2. If the glass is still standing as a crazed panel, don't touch, push or close it. It can collapse all at once.
  3. If pieces have fallen, wear shoes and thick gloves, and sweep, don't pick up by hand. Toughened glass breaks into small blunt-ish cubes, but they still cut.
  4. Wide packing tape across a crazed panel that's still standing can help hold it, but only if you can do it without pressing on the glass.
  5. Take photos of the broken panel and its fittings from a safe distance for the replacement quote.

Why toughened glass breaks for no obvious reason

Toughening heats the glass and cools its surfaces fast, so the outside is locked in compression and the core in tension. That's what makes it several times stronger than ordinary glass, and also why, once anything breaches the compressed skin, the stored energy releases through the whole panel at once.

Edge or corner damage (most common)

The edges are the weak point. A chip from installation, a door that has dropped and dragged, a hinge or patch fitting tightened onto bare glass without its gasket, or a knock from a trolley or a mop bucket can start a flaw that grows. The panel may survive for days or months and then go.

Nickel sulphide inclusions

A tiny particle of nickel sulphide trapped in the glass during manufacture can slowly change form and expand after toughening. When it's in the tension zone, it can break the panel spontaneously, often with a 'butterfly' pattern at the origin point. It's rare but well documented. Heat-soak testing after toughening reduces the risk but doesn't eliminate it.

Stress from fittings or the frame

Metal touching glass directly, over-tightened clamps, a channel that's too tight, or a building that moves can load one point of the glass until it fails.

Thermal stress

Toughened glass handles heat far better than ordinary glass, but large temperature differences across a panel, such as a sunlit shopfront partly shaded, or a geyser or heater blasting one spot, can add to existing stress.

Can it be repaired?

No. Toughened glass can't be cut, drilled or ground after toughening, so a broken panel is replaced with a new one made to the exact size, with hinge and patch holes in the same positions. Toughened glass production generally takes 7 to 10 days. Until then, the opening can be kept safe with the old panel removed.

How the replacement is quoted

For a broken toughened glass replacement, send photos of the broken panel, its fittings and the whole opening on WhatsApp. Replacement isn't on the rate card because the thickness, size, hole positions, access and installation complexity all change the price, so it's quoted from your photos and confirmed with measurements. Repairs don't need the paid site visit that new projects do. Fittings that were part of the cause, such as a sagging hinge or a leaking floor spring, are usually best fixed at the same time.

If you'd rather redo the whole thing, the replacement can be a new install: a frameless shower partition with door, a frameless glass office partition with door or a toughened glass shop front with door, all in Saint-Gobain toughened glass with SS304 fittings.

Reducing the chance of it happening again

  • Make sure every hinge and patch fitting has its gaskets, so no metal touches glass.
  • Fix sagging doors and slamming floor springs early; they chip edges.
  • Keep trolleys, mop buckets and furniture off the glass edges.

A broken door often follows a door that had been dropping and dragging on the floor or slamming shut. For ordinary window panes, see cracked window glass. The glass repair catalogue and glass repairs in Gurgaon have more. Once the area is safe, send photos on WhatsApp.

Common questions

Why did my toughened glass explode suddenly?

Usually because of earlier edge damage, such as a chip from installation or a door dragging, or a tiny nickel sulphide inclusion that expanded over time. Stress from fittings touching bare glass, or uneven heat, can be the final trigger. The break often happens long after the original cause.

Can broken toughened glass be repaired?

No. Toughened glass can't be cut, drilled or ground once it's been toughened, so a damaged panel is replaced with a new one made to size, with the same hole positions for its hinges or fittings. Production generally takes 7 to 10 days.

Bathroom ka glass apne aap toot gaya, ab kya karein?

Keep everyone out of the bathroom and don't touch the glass if it's still standing as a crazed panel. Wear shoes and gloves to sweep fallen pieces. Then send photos of the panel and its hinges on WhatsApp so we can quote the replacement.

Is toughened glass breaking a manufacturing defect?

Sometimes. A nickel sulphide inclusion is a defect in the glass itself, and the break pattern often shows a small 'butterfly' where it started. More often, though, the cause is edge damage or stress from fittings after installation. Photos of where the break began help tell which.

How long does it take to replace a broken toughened glass panel?

Toughened glass is made to order, so production generally takes 7 to 10 days after measurement, because the size and every hole for hinges or patch fittings must be finalised before toughening. Fitting is then usually straightforward, whether the existing hardware is reused or replaced at the same time.
