Cracked window glass: what caused it and how it's replaced

A window pane that cracks from its edge with no impact is usually thermal stress: sun heats the middle while the frame keeps the edge cool. A crack with a centre point is impact. Ordinary window glass can't be safely repaired once cracked; the pane is replaced, cut to size.

Cracked glass pane being replaced in its frame

Most window glass in older Gurugram houses, builder floors and many society flats is ordinary annealed float glass, usually 4 to 6mm, set in aluminium sliding frames, wooden or steel frames with putty or beading. Unlike toughened glass, it cracks in long lines rather than shattering into cubes, and it often cracks without anyone touching it. Reading the crack tells you why.

Reading the crack

A single crack starting at the edge, at right angles to it (thermal stress)

This is the most common unexplained crack, especially on west- and south-facing windows in a Gurugram summer. Sun heats the middle of the pane, while the edges hidden in the frame stay cooler. Glass expands as it heats, the cool edge resists, and if the edge has even a tiny nick from cutting, the stress opens a crack from there. Tinted glass, a curtain or film close to the glass, or an AC blowing cold air onto a hot pane all raise the risk. The crack typically starts square to the edge and then wanders.

Cracks radiating from a point (impact)

A star or spider-web pattern with a centre point means something hit it: a ball, a stone flicked up from the road, a bird, or a window slammed shut.

Cracks from a corner (frame pressure)

A frame that's out of square, glass that's touching the frame without setting blocks, hardened putty, or building settlement can press on a corner until it cracks.

Cracks after a slam (sliding windows)

Sliding shutters that are banged shut against the frame, especially if the rollers are worn and the sash drops, can crack at the lock side.

Is a cracked window safe to leave?

A small, stable crack in annealed glass is usually not immediately dangerous, but it weakens the pane, and heat cycles or wind make it grow. Large panes, panes at height, and any crack that's spreading should be dealt with soon.

What you can safely do now

  • Put clear tape along both sides of the crack to hold the pieces and slow it spreading.
  • Keep curtains or film from pressing against the glass, and don't point the AC at it.
  • Don't slide or slam the shutter; lock it in place if you can.
  • Don't try to remove the cracked pane or its beading yourself. Annealed glass breaks into long, sharp shards.

How it's replaced and quoted

Plain annealed glass can be cut to size after it's made, so a cracked or broken plain glass replacement is usually a straightforward job: the old pane is removed, the frame cleaned, setting blocks and new beading or gaskets fitted, and the new glass seated so no edge touches metal. If your window has toughened glass (common in newer sliders and larger panes), the replacement needs a new toughened pane made to size, which generally takes 7 to 10 days; that's handled as a broken toughened glass replacement.

Send a photo of the crack, the whole window and the frame edge on WhatsApp, along with rough width and height if you can. There's no paid site visit for repairs, and no fixed rate either, because the glass type, thickness, location (ground floor or high up) and frame type all change the job.

Preventing another crack

  • Use glass with clean, smooth edges when replacing, and make sure it sits on setting blocks.
  • Avoid stuck-on dark film or curtains right against sunlit glass.
  • Fix sliding window rollers so shutters don't drop and bang.
  • For large, sun-facing or high-up panes, consider toughened glass.

If a toughened pane has shattered instead, see toughened glass shattered; for glass doors and partitions, see glass partition rattling. For mirrors, shelves or odd-sized panes, there's custom glass installation. Everything else is in the glass repair catalogue, the glass door and partition repair guide and glass repairs in Noida. A photo of the crack on WhatsApp is all we need to start.

Common questions

Why did my window glass crack by itself?

Usually thermal stress: sun heats the centre of the pane while the edges in the frame stay cooler, and a tiny nick on the edge lets a crack open. It's common on sun-facing windows in summer. A crack that starts square to the edge with no impact point is the classic sign.

Can a cracked window glass be repaired?

Not reliably. Resin kits are made for small chips, not cracks that run to the edge of a window pane. The crack weakens the whole pane and tends to grow, so the usual fix is replacing the pane with new glass cut to size.

Khidki ka kaanch crack ho gaya hai, kya turant badalna zaroori hai?

A small, stable crack can usually wait a short while if you tape it on both sides and avoid slamming the window. A long or spreading crack, a large pane or a window at height should be replaced soon. Send a photo on WhatsApp.

Should I replace a cracked window with toughened glass?

For large panes, sun-facing windows or glass at height, toughened glass is often the better choice because it resists heat and impact much better. It has to be made to size, which generally takes 7 to 10 days. For small panes, plain glass is usually fine.

Do I need a site visit to replace cracked window glass?

No paid site visit is needed for repairs. A photo of the crack, one of the whole window and its frame, and rough width and height sent on WhatsApp are usually enough to quote. Tell us the floor too, since a pane high up on a builder floor or tower needs different access from one at ground level.
