Designing for a desert climate
Rajasthan's heat changes the brief more than any other state we work in. Summer temperatures climb past 40°C, sunlight is intense for most of the year, and dust storms arrive before the monsoon. For glass and metal, that means:
- Shade before glass. External aluminium louvers or deep canopies keep sun off a facade, so the building stays cooler and the glass can stay clear.
- Choose the glass for the elevation. On west and south faces, tinted glass or solar-control glass reduces heat gain; on a north-facing shop front, clear glass is usually fine.
- Pick finishes that resist UV. ACP with a good coating and powder-coated steel hold their colour better under strong sun.
- Design moving parts for dust. Sliding gates, shutters and floor-spring doors need tracks and seals that can be cleaned.
Heritage frontages
Jaipur's walled city and other heritage areas in Rajasthan have their own look, and exterior changes there are usually regulated. Check the rules for the frontage with the local authority first; interior glass work is generally more straightforward.
