Sliding driveway gates for tight entrances

A mild steel gate that travels sideways on V-groove wheels along a floor track, guided at the top by rollers on a post. It needs no swing space inside the plot, so it suits short driveways, sloping drives and entrances that open straight onto a parking bay. The leaf parks behind the boundary wall, which must be long enough to take it. Frames are welded from MS box section with sheet, bar or laser-cut infill, finished in primer and enamel or powder coat. The gate is built motor-ready, with space and fixings for a rack-and-pinion operator now or later.

A sliding gate solves the most common complaint about a swing gate: there is nowhere for it to open. FabWise measures the opening, the run of wall it will park against and the level of the floor, then builds a gate that rolls straight and stays on its track. It can be manual today and motorised later. Site visits in Gurugram and Noida cost ₹99.

When a sliding gate beats a swing gate

A swing gate needs a clear arc on the inside of the plot equal to the width of its leaves. On many Gurgaon builder floors the car parks almost against the gate, and a swing gate simply cannot open with the car inside. A sliding gate needs no arc at all, only a straight run of wall beside the opening that is at least as long as the gate.

Sliding gates also suit sloping drives. A swing leaf scrapes a rising floor, while a sliding gate runs on a level track laid across the slope.

The trade-off is the track. A floor-track gate runs on wheels in a steel rail set into the floor; it is the simplest and the most common. A cantilever gate hangs from rollers on posts and leaves the opening clear of any rail, which suits a gravel or uneven drive but needs extra wall length behind the gate for the counterweight section. A telescopic pair of leaves sliding together helps when the parking wall is short.

If you have the space, compare it with a conventional MS main gate before deciding.

Motorised sliding gates: what to plan for

Most owners do not motorise on day one, and they do not need to. What matters is that the gate is built motor-ready: a straight, rigid leaf, a mounting plate for the operator, and a strip along the bottom where a toothed rack can be bolted. A gate that bends or binds on its wheels will burn out a motor, so the rigidity is designed in from the start.

When you do add a motor, it is usually a rack-and-pinion operator sitting on a small concrete pad inside the wall. It needs an electrical point nearby, and ideally a battery backup for power cuts, which are still common in some Noida and Gurugram sectors. Safety photocells across the opening stop the gate if a child or a car is in the way. Remote controls and app control are options on most operators.

Tell the team at the visit if motorisation is likely. They will plan the track length, the pad position and the cable route, so nothing has to be broken open later.

What changes the cost of a sliding gate

Like every FabWise fabrication job, a sliding gate is priced from the site measurement rather than a published rate. The biggest driver is opening width: longer gates need deeper box sections to stay straight over the span, and more steel goes into them. The track type comes next, because a floor track with V-groove wheels costs less than a cantilever system with heavy roller carriages.

Infill and design work the same way as on any gate, from plain bars through full sheet to a laser-cut pattern. Floor work is the item people forget: if the floor across the opening is uneven, the track needs a levelled concrete bed so the gate does not run uphill one way and run away the other.

Smaller items add up too. Top guide rollers, a catch post and end stoppers keep the gate upright and on the rail. The finish is enamel paint or powder coat. And motor readiness (the rack fixing strip, the operator plate and a conduit for the cable) is worth paying for now even if you buy the motor years later.

The MS gate price guide sets out how these add up, and the written quote itemises them.

From visit to a gate that rolls

The visit costs ₹99 and is credited to the final bill. The team measures the opening, the clear wall length the gate will park against, and the floor level along the whole travel, because a few centimetres of fall across the drive is enough to make a gate run away on its own.

You receive a written, all-inclusive quote, usually within about two hours of the visit, valid for three days. Fabrication begins once the 50% advance is paid. The leaf, wheels and guides are built and finished in the workshop.

On site, the track is laid and grouted dead level first, then the gate is lifted on, the top guide rollers set, and the stoppers fixed at each end. The gate is run through its full travel until it moves with one hand. The remaining 50% is due on completion. For other entrance work, see the full metal fabrication catalogue or the Noida metal fabrication page.

Why sliding gates jam, and how to prevent it

Nearly every sliding gate that gets stuck has one of three causes. Grit, leaves or a stone in the track lifts a wheel off the rail. A wheel bearing has rusted or worn flat. Or the guide rollers at the top have been knocked out of line, so the gate leans and drags.

Prevention is cheap. Sweep the track every week or two, especially after a dust storm. Grease the wheel bearings and top rollers every few months. Make sure rainwater drains out of the track rather than standing in it; a track that holds water rusts from below.

The gate itself needs the same rust care as any MS work: touch up chips before the monsoon and repaint an enamel finish every two to three years. Read about rust on metal gates and grills if yours is already showing it.

Common questions

How much space do I need for a sliding gate?

You need a straight run of wall beside the opening at least as long as the gate itself, plus a little extra for the end stopper. A cantilever gate needs more, often around half as much again, for its counterweight section. If neither fits, a telescopic gate with two leaves sliding together can work. The team checks this at the visit.

Can a manual sliding gate be motorised later?

Yes, if it is built motor-ready. FabWise builds sliding gates rigid enough for an operator, with a fixing strip for the toothed rack and a plate for the motor. You then need an electrical point near the gate. Mention it at the visit so the cable route and motor pad are planned in.

Sliding gate ka kaam kitne din mein hota hai?

It depends on the size and the design. Fabrication starts after the 50% advance, and the timeline is written into the quote. A plain bar gate is quicker than one with laser-cut panels or powder coating. The installation itself, including laying the track, usually takes a day, sometimes two if the floor needs levelling first.

Floor track or cantilever sliding gate, which is better?

A floor track is simpler, cheaper and suits a flat paved drive. A cantilever gate has no rail across the opening, so nothing collects in a track and it suits gravel or uneven ground, but it needs extra wall length behind it and heavier roller carriages. For most Gurgaon and Noida houses, a floor track is the practical choice.

Why does my sliding gate roll open by itself?

Usually because the track is not level and the gate is running downhill. It can also happen when an end stopper is missing or broken. Re-levelling the track or adding a stopper and a ground catch normally fixes it. Send a short video on WhatsApp and the team can tell you what it needs.
