Mild steel (MS): the metal behind gates, grills and sheds
Mild steel, or MS, is low-carbon steel, typically about 0.05–0.25% carbon, which makes it easy to cut, bend and weld. It is the standard material for gates, window grills, sheds and staircases because it is strong and economical, but it rusts unless it is properly primed and painted, powder coated or galvanised.

When a fabricator in Gurugram says "iron gate" or "MS grill", they almost always mean mild steel. It is the workhorse metal of residential and commercial fabrication: the main gate, the window grill, the MS spiral staircase, the frame under a polycarbonate shed and the steel deck of a mezzanine. This page covers what mild steel actually is, why it is used so widely, and the one weakness you must plan for.
What is mild steel, and why is it called "mild"?
Steel is iron with a small amount of carbon. Mild steel sits at the low end, typically about 0.05–0.25% carbon. Less carbon means a softer, more ductile metal: it bends before it breaks, cuts cleanly, and welds without special preheating. That is exactly what a fabricator wants. Structural mild steel in India is commonly bought to IS 2062, which sets chemistry and strength grades for plates, angles, channels and sections. Hollow sections (square and rectangular pipes) are the other big category, and most gates and grills are built from them.
What forms does MS come in?
| Form | What it looks like | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Square / rectangular hollow section | Box pipe, e.g. 40×40 or 50×25 | Gate frames, grill frames, shed purlins |
| Round pipe | Tube | Railings, handrails, pergola posts |
| Angle (L section) | Two flanges at 90° | Frames, brackets, support ledges |
| Channel / I-beam | C or I profile | Mezzanine beams, heavy shed structure |
| Flat and square bar | Solid strip or bar | Grill infill, decorative bars |
| Sheet and plate | Flat sheet in various gauges | Gate cladding, CNC laser-cut jaali, safety door skins |
What is mild steel good at, and what is it bad at?
- Strength for the price: for gates, structural frames and staircases it gives the most load capacity per rupee of any common metal.
- Workability: easy to cut, drill, bend and weld on site, so on-site adjustment is simple.
- Repairability: a cracked joint or bent bar can be re-welded rather than replaced.
- Weight: heavy compared with aluminium, so sliding gates need proper wheels and tracks and walls need sound anchoring.
- Rust: the big one. Bare mild steel rusts quickly in rain and humidity.
How do you stop mild steel rusting?
Rust starts wherever bare steel meets moisture, typically at welds, cut ends, the bottom of gate frames and inside hollow sections that trap water. Protection options, roughly from basic to best:
- Red oxide or zinc-rich primer plus enamel paint: the traditional finish. Works if the surface is cleaned of mill scale and rust first, and if it is repainted every few years.
- [Powder coating](/glossary/powder-coating): a baked polymer finish, tougher and more even than paint, applied in a factory oven. Needs proper pretreatment.
- [Hot-dip galvanising](/glossary/hot-dip-galvanising): a metallurgically bonded zinc layer, the longest-lasting option for sheds and outdoor structures, which can be painted or powder coated over.
Detailing matters too: drain holes at the bottom of hollow sections, sealed tube ends, and welds ground and primed before the top coat. Our guide on MS gate rust protection goes step by step, and if an old gate is already flaking, see metal gate or grill rusting.
Mild steel vs iron vs stainless steel
"Iron" in everyday speech usually means mild steel; true wrought or cast iron is rare in modern fabrication. Stainless steel (see SS304 vs SS202) contains at least about 10.5% chromium and does not need a coating, but costs considerably more and is harder to work. For a balcony, the choice is laid out in our MS vs SS railing guide: MS is cheaper and stronger per section, SS needs less upkeep.
How do you check MS quality?
- Ask for section sizes and wall thickness in the quote, not just "MS pipe". A thin-walled pipe looks the same but flexes and rusts through sooner.
- Check that welds are continuous where they need to be and ground smooth on visible faces.
- Ask what primer and finish will be used, and whether welds are primed before the top coat.
- For structural work like mezzanines, ask about beam sizes and how loads reach the floor or wall.
Where FabWise uses it
Mild steel is the base material for most of the metal fabrication range: the MS main gate, MS sliding gate, MS window grill, safety doors, staircases and mezzanine floors, plus the frames of MS pergolas. These are quoted after a site visit, because section sizes and finish depend on the opening and the exposure; the written quote spells them out.
Common questions
Is MS the same as iron?
In everyday Indian usage, yes: an "iron gate" or "loha grill" is almost always mild steel. Technically, mild steel is iron with a small amount of carbon, typically about 0.05–0.25%, which makes it stronger and more consistent than old wrought iron and much easier to weld than cast iron. True cast or wrought iron is rarely used in modern gates and grills.
How long does a mild steel gate last?
It depends almost entirely on the finish and upkeep. Bare or poorly primed MS can rust within a season. A properly cleaned, primed and painted gate that is touched up every few years can last decades, and powder coating or hot-dip galvanising extends that further. Drainage and sealed tube ends matter as much as the paint.
Should I choose MS or SS for my balcony railing?
MS is cheaper, stronger per section and can be painted any colour, but it needs repainting to stay rust-free. SS304 costs more but needs only cleaning. For a covered balcony where you don't mind periodic painting, MS works well; for an exposed terrace or a low-maintenance look, SS304 is usually the better long-term choice.
MS gate mein jung kyun lagta hai?
Rust starts where bare steel meets moisture: at welds that were not primed, cut ends, the bottom rail where water collects, and inside hollow pipes with no drain hole. Paint chipped by the gate hitting a stopper also exposes steel. Cleaning back to bare metal, priming and repainting stops it; powder coating or galvanising lasts longer.
