Steel and aluminium pergolas for terraces and gardens
A pergola is an open-roof frame of mild steel or aluminium posts and beams, topped with spaced louvres or rafters that cast moving shade while leaving the air free to circulate. It is specified over terraces, rooftop sitting areas, lawns and poolsides where a solid roof would trap heat. The louvres can be fixed at an angle, or the top can carry a polycarbonate or glass panel in part for rain cover. MS is primed and painted or powder coated against rust; aluminium needs no rust protection but costs more. A pergola gives shade, not shelter from rain, unless a sheet is added. Measured on site and installed by one team.
A pergola is for people who want to sit outside without a heavy roof over their heads. The slatted top breaks the sun into stripes, the sides stay open, and the breeze still gets through, which matters on a Gurugram terrace in April. We build pergolas in mild steel or aluminium, size the louvres to the angle of the sun on your site, and can roof part of it in polycarbonate if you want a dry corner for the monsoon.
Pergola or shed: which does your terrace need?
The two are often confused, and choosing the wrong one is the commonest regret.
A polycarbonate terrace shed is a closed roof. It keeps rain off completely, but traps some heat under it in May and June.
A pergola is open. Its louvres or rafters block a large share of direct sun depending on their depth and spacing, but rain falls through. It suits a space you use in the mornings and evenings, a rooftop garden where plants still need light and water, or a lawn where a solid roof would look heavy.
Many homeowners settle on a hybrid: an open pergola over most of the area, with one bay roofed in clear polycarbonate over the seating so it stays usable in a shower. That keeps the airy look and still gives a dry spot.
Penthouse terraces on Golf Course Road and Golf Course Extension Road, rooftop areas of independent houses in Nirvana Country, and ground-floor lawns in Noida's sector houses are typical places for a pergola.
Mild steel versus aluminium louvres
Mild steel (MS) is the usual pergola material. Box sections for the posts and beams, with rectangular tube or flat louvres on top, give a strong frame that can span well between posts. Steel rusts if it is left bare, so it is primed and then painted or powder coated, and any scratch should be touched up promptly. A wood-grain finish on steel is a popular way to get the look of timber without the termites.
Aluminium louvre profiles are lighter, do not rust, and come in powder-coated or wood-effect finishes. They are a good choice near a pool, on a terrace with poor drainage, or where the parapet cannot carry much weight. The trade-off is cost and a slightly lighter, less massive look.
Louvre size and spacing set the shade. Deeper, closer louvres give more shade; set at an angle, they block the high midday sun while letting in the lower morning light. We discuss the orientation of your terrace at the visit and suggest a spacing, rather than repeating one pattern everywhere.
Fixing a pergola safely on a terrace
A pergola is a light structure, but it is tall and open, so wind is the real load. In the dust storms that sweep Delhi NCR before the monsoon, an open frame with no bracing can rack and loosen.
On a terrace the posts are usually fixed with base plates and anchor fasteners into the slab or a beam, or tied back to the parapet and the stair-room wall. The slab is the roof of the flat below, so we avoid breaking the waterproofing more than necessary and seal around every anchor. On a lawn, posts usually sit on small concrete footings.
In societies, an external structure often needs RWA or maintenance approval before it goes up. Penthouse owners in group housing should check the society's rules on terrace structures and colour before booking fabrication. A builder floor terrace usually needs only the agreement of the other owners, but it is worth getting that in writing.

What moves the price of a pergola
We do not publish a pergola rate, because the design choices change the cost more than the size does. You get a figure after the visit, in writing.
Footprint and height. The covered area and the post height set how much steel or aluminium goes in.
Material. Aluminium louvre systems cost more than MS sections of similar size.
Louvre density. Closer, deeper louvres mean more material per square foot.
Finish. Plain enamel paint, powder coat or wood-grain effect, in rising order of cost.
Partial roofing. Adding polycarbonate or glass to a bay adds sheet, glazing bars and a gutter.
Lighting provisions. If you want a conduit run inside a beam for fans or lights, it is planned into the fabrication, not added afterwards.
The terrace shed cost guide explains how roof-area pricing works and applies equally to pergolas.
From visit to finished pergola
Book a site visit for ₹99; it is adjusted against your bill if you proceed and is usually arranged within 24 to 48 hours. We measure, check the fixing points and talk through louvre spacing and finish. The written quote usually reaches you within about two hours and is valid for three days.
With a 50% advance, fabrication begins: cutting and welding the frame, then priming and finishing it at the workshop where the coating can cure properly. Installation on site is usually quick, often a day or two for a residential pergola. The remaining 50% is paid on completion.
Keep it clean with a wipe-down twice a year, check the base plates after a big storm, and touch up chips on MS before they rust. See all shade options in sheds and pergolas, or the Noida sheds and pergolas page for local notes.

Common questions
Is a pergola waterproof?
No, not on its own. A pergola has an open top of spaced louvres or rafters, so it gives shade but lets rain through. If you want a dry area, one or more bays can be roofed in clear or tinted polycarbonate with a gutter, keeping the open look over the rest of the space.
MS or aluminium pergola, which is better for a Gurgaon terrace?
MS is stronger for its cost and is the usual choice; it needs primer and paint or powder coating and the odd touch-up against rust. Aluminium is lighter, does not rust and suits poolsides, damp terraces or weak parapets, but costs more. Both are available in wood-effect finishes.
How much does a terrace pergola cost in Gurgaon or Noida?
It depends on the area, post height, material, how closely the louvres are spaced, the finish, and whether any bay is roofed. Because these vary so much, we quote after a site visit. You receive a written, all-inclusive quote, usually within about two hours of the visit.
Can a pergola be fixed on the terrace without damaging the waterproofing?
Usually yes. Posts are fixed with base plates and anchors into the slab or a beam, or tied to the parapet and stair-room wall, and every anchor is sealed. If the waterproofing is already weak, it is better to repair it before the pergola goes up, since the posts will sit on top of it.
Pergola ke upar polycarbonate lag sakta hai kya?
Yes. A common design is an open pergola with polycarbonate sheet laid over one or two bays above the seating, so that corner stays dry in the rain while the rest remains open. The roofed bay needs a small slope and a gutter, which we plan into the frame from the start.

- What is hot-dip galvanising (hdg)?Hot-dip galvanising is the process of dipping cleaned steel into molten zinc at about 450°C so the zinc bonds to the steel as alloy layers, protecting it from rust both as a barrier and, where scratched, by corroding sacrificially in place of the steel.
- What is polycarbonate sheet?Polycarbonate sheet is a tough, lightweight, transparent thermoplastic roofing and glazing material, sold as solid or multiwall sheet, that is far more impact-resistant than glass and lasts outdoors only when it carries a UV-protective layer on the sun side.
