Pergola rusting in Gurgaon: treating the rust and keeping it from coming back
An MS pergola rusts where paint has cracked and water sits: on top of flat beams, at welded joints, inside hollow sections and at column bases. Surface rust can be cleaned, primed and repainted; members rusted thin need replacing. Galvanising or powder coating on new steel lasts far longer than site paint.

A pergola is one of the most exposed pieces of steel on a house. It sits on a terrace or lawn in Gurugram's 45°C summer sun, takes the monsoon full on, and gets dusted, watered and leaned on. Mild steel without good protection starts to rust within a couple of seasons, beginning at places you don't usually look.
The short answer
Rust on a pergola starts where water lingers and paint is thinnest: the top faces of beams, welded joints, cut ends of hollow tube and column bases. Surface rust is cosmetic if caught early; flaking, pitted or swollen steel means the section is losing strength.
Where pergolas rust first
Top faces of beams and rafters
Dust settles there, holds moisture after rain or plant watering, and the sun bakes the paint until it cracks. Rust starts on the side nobody sees.
Welded joints
Paint is thinnest at weld edges, and welds are often painted without removing spatter and slag. This is the most common starting point.
Hollow sections
Open ends or small gaps at welds let rain into tubes, which then rust from the inside out. Bubbling paint on a tube usually means rust below.
Column bases
Water collects where a column meets the floor, especially if the base plate sits in a puddle or under planter drainage.
Under climbing plants
Creepers keep steel damp and shaded and hide rust until it's advanced.
What you can check and do
- From a stable ladder, look at the top faces of beams and at each weld for rust and lifting paint.
- Press bubbled paint gently with a screwdriver. If it sinks or flakes into brown scale, rust has gone deep.
- Check column bases for pitting or standing water.
- Small surface spots can be wire-brushed, primed with a rust-inhibiting primer and touched up.
| What you see | Severity | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Light orange spots, paint intact around | Surface rust | Clean, prime and touch up |
| Bubbled paint on tubes | Rust under paint | Strip back, treat, prime and repaint |
| Rust lines along welds | Joint rust | Grind, treat, seal, repaint |
| Flaking layers, pitting | Section loss | Replace the affected member |
| Base plate rusted through | Structural | Replace base or column section |
Repaint or replace?
Most pergolas can be saved with proper preparation: removing all loose rust, priming bare steel and applying a good exterior coating. The key is preparation, not more paint. Our MS gate rust protection guide explains the steps, and they apply to any outdoor steel. If several members are badly pitted, a new MS pergola is better; ask for hot-dip galvanising or powder coating over a proper primer, sealed tube ends and base plates raised off the floor. Our terrace pergola designs guide covers options, including polycarbonate tops that keep rain off the steel, and the terrace shed cost guide covers what affects pricing.
How FabWise handles a rusting pergola
Send photos of the whole pergola and close-ups of the worst rust, especially at joints and bases, on WhatsApp. We'll tell you whether it's a repaint job or members need replacing. A site visit, if needed, costs ₹99 in Gurugram, Noida and the rest of our Delhi NCR cities, and is adjusted against the bill. Pergola repairs and new pergolas are quoted after the visit.
Prevention in a monsoon climate
Inspect every October and touch up chips immediately. Keep creepers trimmed away from joints, and don't let planter water drain onto column bases. Cap open tube ends. A roof of polycarbonate or a glass canopy over part of the pergola keeps much of the steel dry.

Common questions
How do I stop my iron pergola from rusting?
Remove loose rust down to bare steel, prime with a rust-inhibiting primer and apply a good exterior paint. Pay most attention to welds, beam tops and column bases. For new pergolas, galvanising or powder coating over primer lasts much longer than site-applied paint.
Is a rusty pergola safe?
Surface rust is cosmetic. Deep pitting, flaking layers, or rust at column bases and welds can reduce strength. Avoid hanging swings, heavy planters or lights from rusted members until a fabricator has checked them and replaced any section that has lost real thickness.
Should I galvanise or powder coat a pergola?
Both help. Hot-dip galvanising protects the steel itself, including inside joints. Powder coating gives a tough, even colour finish. Galvanising with a compatible coat on top gives the longest life outdoors in the NCR monsoon, and is worth asking for on any new pergola.
Pergola mein jung lag gaya hai, paint karne se theek hoga?
If the rust is only on the surface, yes, after proper cleaning and primer. Painting over loose rust won't last. If the steel is flaking in layers or visibly thinner at joints or bases, those pieces need replacing before repainting the rest.
