Span, wind and the steel frame

A longer span needs deeper steel sections or intermediate posts. On a big terrace you can choose: fewer posts and heavier steel for an open space underneath, or more posts and lighter steel for a lower price. Wind adds to the problem on open land. Many plotted houses have a setback deep and wide enough for two cars, and a shed over it protects paint from the sun and the bird droppings that come with tree-lined roads. A cantilevered shed, held from one side, leaves the area clear of posts; a post-supported shed can span further for less steel. The glass is normally laminated or toughened-laminated so that it stays in place if it breaks, and it hangs from stainless steel or MS brackets anchored into the structure.
