Gates, Grills and Renovation Work in Alpha and Beta, Greater Noida

Alpha and Beta are where Greater Noida began. Alpha 1 sits beside Pari Chowk with its own Aqua Line station, Alpha 2 runs north from it, and Beta 1 and Beta 2 lie just beyond. The roads are wide, the plots are generous and many houses are now two decades old or more. That age is what drives most fabrication work in the Alpha and Beta sectors of Greater Noida: things that were fitted when the house was new are wearing out together.

What wears out first on a house this age?

Walk down any lane in Alpha 2 and the pattern repeats. Gates fitted in the first years have rusted along the bottom rail where rainwater sits. Window grills have bled rust down the plaster. The terrace has been half-roofed with whatever sheet was cheap at the time, and it now leaks at every bolt. Inside, bathrooms still have a plastic curtain or a framed sliding door that sticks.

Replace the gate, or the whole front?

Many owners here start with the gate and end up redoing the boundary, because the old pillars have tilted or the frontage has been re-levelled since the house was built. At the visit we look at the pillars, the ground level and the swing or slide path before suggesting a design. A wide frontage with a car inside usually suits a sliding gate; a narrower one, a pair of swing leaves. Roofing the terrace

A covered terrace is the most useful room an Alpha house can add: somewhere to dry clothes in the monsoon and sit out in winter. On a builder floor, check who owns the terrace before you commit, because in many of these buildings it belongs to the top-floor owner alone.

Bathrooms: the inside job

Bathrooms in these houses are often compact and were tiled before glass partitions were common, so a simple fixed panel or a sliding screen fits best.
