Main Gate Designs for Indian Homes: Materials, Styles and Sizes
Swing or sliding, MS or stainless, plain or CNC jaali: how to choose a main gate for a house or builder floor in Gurugram or Noida that opens easily and does not rust or sag.

The right main gate for an Indian home depends first on the space you have (a swing gate needs room to open, a sliding gate needs wall length beside the opening), then on the material (MS for strength and design freedom, stainless steel for low upkeep, aluminium for lightness, WPC panels for a wood look), and finally on the pillars, which have to carry the gate's weight for years. A well-made MS main gate with a proper rust-proof finish suits most homes in Gurugram and Noida.
This guide covers styles, materials, sizes, motors and the two things that most often go wrong: sagging and rust.
Swing gate or sliding gate: which suits your entrance?
| Factor | Swing gate | Sliding gate |
|---|---|---|
| Space needed | Clear driveway space for the leaves to swing in (or out) | Wall length beside the opening, roughly equal to the gate width |
| Best for | Deep driveways, kothis, farmhouses | Short driveways, gates opening straight onto a ramp or road |
| Load on pillars | High: whole leaf hangs on hinges | Lower: weight runs on wheels or a cantilever frame |
| Motorisation | Swing-arm or underground motors | Rack-and-pinion slide motor |
| Common issue | Sagging and dragging over time | Track blocked by dust or stones |
In builder-floor sectors where the car parks a few feet from the gate, a sliding gate often makes the most sense. In plotted colonies such as Nirvana Country or Palam Vihar, with deeper front setbacks, a double-leaf swing gate is the classic choice.
Track or cantilever sliding gate?
A track-type sliding gate runs on wheels along a rail in the floor. It is simple and economical, but the rail collects dust, gravel and leaves, which is the usual reason for a sliding gate that gets stuck. A cantilever gate has no floor track: it rolls on a carriage beside the opening and needs an extra tail section beyond the opening, so it needs more wall length. It suits uneven driveways and dusty sites.
Which material should a main gate be made of?
MS (mild steel)
Strong, weldable into any design, and the most common choice in India. Box sections, square pipes, flat bars and sheet can be combined freely. It needs proper rust protection (covered below).
Stainless steel
SS304 gates need no painting and keep a modern look. They are usually simpler in design (tubes, sheet and glass or acrylic inserts) and cost more in material than MS. Lower grades such as SS202 can stain outdoors, so ask for the grade in writing.
Aluminium
Light, so it puts less strain on pillars and motors, and it does not rust. Aluminium gates use extruded slats or cast designs. They are less resistant to impact than steel, which matters on a busy street or where cars turn close to the gate.
WPC or wood-look panels in a steel frame
WPC (wood-plastic composite) or wood-look aluminium slats fixed into an MS frame give a warm wooden look without the swelling and termites of real timber. The steel frame carries the load; the panels are the face.
| Material | Strength | Rust risk | Upkeep | Design range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS | High | Yes, needs coating | Repaint every few years | Widest |
| Stainless steel (SS304) | High | Very low | Wipe clean | Modern, linear |
| Aluminium | Medium | None | Low | Slats, cast patterns |
| WPC panels on MS frame | High (frame) | Frame only | Low on panels, frame needs paint | Wood look |
What gate styles are popular right now?
- CNC laser-cut jaali: an MS sheet cut into a pattern (geometric, floral, a family initial). It gives privacy with some light and air, and is one of the most popular styles now.
- Horizontal slat gates: flat bars or box sections laid horizontally, often in black or grey, for a clean modern front.
- Full-sheet privacy gates: plain or embossed sheet with no see-through gaps, popular on busy roads.
- Classic grill gates: vertical bars with cast finials and scrolls, still common in older colonies and farmhouses.
- Mixed gates: a steel frame with WPC, acrylic or glass panels for a contemporary look.
A main gate often looks best when it matches the window safety grills and balcony railings in pattern and colour. Planning them together saves time and repeated visits.
How big should a main gate be?
Measure the opening between finished pillars, not between brick faces, because plaster and cladding take up space. As a common guide, a single car entrance is usually around 10 to 12 ft wide, and two cars side by side commonly need 14 ft or more. Height is usually 5 to 7 ft depending on privacy wishes and the boundary wall. A separate pedestrian wicket gate, or a small door inside the main gate, saves opening the whole gate for every visitor.
Will your pillars carry the gate?
This is the most overlooked part of the job. A heavy swing gate hanging on a brick pillar slowly pulls the hinges out of line, and the gate starts to drop at the far end and scrape the floor. Our page on a gate sagging and dragging covers the fix for an existing gate.
- An RCC pillar, or an MS post or plate embedded in the pillar, carries a swing gate far better than plain brick.
- Hinges should be heavy-duty and bolted or welded to a plate anchored deep into the pillar, not into the plaster.
- Wide leaves can use a small wheel on the far end that runs on the floor to share the weight.
- A sliding gate takes most of its weight on wheels or the cantilever carriage, so it is kinder to weak pillars.
Should you motorise the gate?
Motors are common on larger gates and in homes where someone drives in late. A sliding gate uses a rack-and-pinion motor; a swing gate uses arm-type or underground motors. If you might motorise later, say so before fabrication, so the gate is built straight and stiff enough, the rack can be fitted, and power reaches the pillar. Ask for a manual release for power cuts and safety sensors so the gate stops if a car or child is in the way.
How do you stop an MS gate from rusting?
- Surface preparation: remove mill scale and rust before any coating; most early rust starts here.
- Primer: a red oxide or zinc-rich primer on every face, including inside corners and under hinge plates.
- Finish: two coats of enamel or PU paint, or powder coating for a harder finish.
- Closed sections: seal the ends of hollow pipes and leave drain holes at the bottom so water does not sit inside.
- Bottom edge: keep a gap above the floor so the gate isn't standing in monsoon water.
- Touch up chips promptly, before rust creeps under the paint.

What changes the price of a main gate?
Gates are commonly priced by area or by weight, and the material, section sizes, design (plain vs CNC jaali), finish, hardware, any motor and the state of the pillars all move the figure. We quote this work after a site visit; the MS gate price guide explains how each part adds up. You can browse all metal fabrication, including a steel safety door, or see how gate jobs run in Gurgaon and Noida, including the plotted sectors around Sector 44 to 50.
FabWise measures the opening and checks the pillars at a ₹99 site visit, adjusted against your bill if you go ahead, and sends a written, all-inclusive quote for the gate design you approve.
Common questions
Which is better, a sliding gate or a swing gate?
A swing gate suits a deep driveway with room for the leaves to open, and is simpler. A sliding gate suits a short driveway or a gate opening straight onto a ramp, but needs wall length beside the opening about equal to the gate width. Sliding gates also put less load on the pillars.
Which material is best for a house main gate?
MS is the most common and the most flexible for design, but it needs proper primer and paint or powder coat. SS304 needs almost no upkeep. Aluminium is light and rust-free but less impact-resistant. WPC panels in a steel frame give a wood look. Your budget, design and upkeep tolerance decide the best fit.
Why is my gate sagging and touching the floor?
Usually because the pillar or hinge fixing is too weak for the gate's weight, so the hinges slowly pull out of line. Worn hinges and a distorted frame are other causes. Send us a photo or video on WhatsApp; often the hinges can be re-fixed on a stronger plate or the gate given a support wheel.
Can my existing gate be motorised?
Often yes, if the gate is straight, stiff, swings or slides freely, and power can reach the pillar. A sliding gate needs a rack fitted along its length; a swing gate needs mounting points on the pillar and gate. A gate that drags or is badly sagging should be repaired first.
Main gate ka standard size kya hota hai?
There isn't one standard size, because it depends on your plot and car. As a common guide, a single car entrance is about 10 to 12 ft wide and a two-car entrance 14 ft or more, with height usually 5 to 7 ft. We measure between the finished pillars at the site visit.
How do I stop my MS gate from rusting?
Start with proper surface preparation and a primer on every face, then two coats of enamel or PU paint, or powder coating. Seal hollow sections and leave drain holes so water can't sit inside, keep the bottom edge clear of standing water, and touch up chips as soon as they appear.
Is a CNC laser-cut gate strong enough?
Yes, if the cut sheet is fixed inside a sturdy MS frame of box sections and the sheet thickness suits the design. Very fine patterns in thin sheet can flex, so the frame carries the structural load and the jaali panel provides privacy and the look.
