Window Grill Designs That Are Secure, Fire-Safe and Look Good by FabWise in Gurugram & Noida

A good window grill design keeps intruders and children's falls out while still letting you out in an emergency. That means bars close enough that nobody can squeeze through, a sturdy frame fixed into concrete or brick with anchor fasteners, and, on at least one window per floor, an openable grill panel that locks from the inside. Within those rules, the style is yours: plain vertical bars, box grills, flat-bar patterns or CNC-cut jaali in mild steel, or stainless steel for low upkeep.

This guide covers grills for flats, builder floors and independent houses in Gurugram, Noida and across Delhi NCR, from ground-floor windows to high-rise balconies.

The CNC laser-cut jaali style is the one most owners ask about now, because it gives a patterned facade and some privacy while still letting light and air in. A fine pattern in thin sheet can flex, so it should sit inside a stiff frame of box or angle section.

How close should grill bars be?

Close enough that nobody, adult or child, can pass through, and that a small child can't get their head stuck. A commonly used guide is to keep openings under about 4 inches (100 mm) in at least one direction, and closer than that on low windows and windows in children's rooms. Avoid long horizontal members low down that act as a ladder.

  • Bars should be solid or thick-walled: thin hollow pipe can be cut or bent more easily.
  • Every bar should pass through or weld into the frame at both ends, not just touch it.
  • On a box grill, the top should be closed too, or it becomes a step for climbing.
  • Where a window opens onto a balcony or terrace, think of the grill and railing together.

Why does every home need an openable grill?

This is the safety point most homes miss. If every window on a floor has a fixed grill and a fire blocks the main door, there is no way out. General fire-safety advice stresses having a second way out of every floor, and on a fully grilled floor a window or balcony is often the only candidate. An openable grill is the same design on heavy hinges, with a lock or bolt operated from the inside.

  1. Pick a window large enough to climb through, ideally one that opens onto a balcony or a lower roof.
  2. Use a padlock or lock whose key is kept beside the window, out of reach from outside, and that everyone in the house knows about.
  3. Avoid welding the panel shut 'for now'; it rarely gets opened again.
  4. Make sure furniture or an AC unit doesn't block it.

MS or stainless steel for window grills?

Most grills are mild steel: strong, easy to weld into any pattern and economical. MS needs proper primer and paint or powder coat, and the coating matters more than the design. Our MS gate rust protection guide explains the coating systems; the same applies to grills. Stainless steel (SS304) grills cost more but don't need painting, which helps on high floors where repainting means scaffolding or rope access. For the grade differences, see SS railing grades: 304, 202 and 316.

How should a grill be fixed to the wall?

A grill is only as secure as its fixing. A grill held into plaster with a few screws can be levered out, and a loose grill on an upper floor is a hazard to the street below.

  • Fix into the RCC frame, lintel or solid brickwork with anchor fasteners or grouted lugs, not into plaster or tile.
  • Use enough fixing points: at the corners and along the sides, not just at the top.
  • On a box grill, the projecting frame needs brackets sized for its weight and any pots placed on it.
  • Seal around fixings so rainwater doesn't seep into the wall and stain or rust.

If an existing grill has started to move, see grill loose from wall. If it is rusting, or leaving brown streaks below, see metal gate or grill rusting.

Can a grill work with mosquito mesh and sliding windows?

Yes, and it is worth planning together. A grill can carry a fixed or pleated mosquito mesh on its inner face, or have a separate mesh frame inside the window. For aluminium sliding windows, make sure the grill sits far enough outside that the sash can slide and be cleaned. Our mosquito mesh types compared guide explains the options.

What do RWAs and builders allow on the outside?

In many gated societies, especially newer towers on Dwarka Expressway and in Noida Extension, the RWA or maintenance agency controls the external look. Some ask for a uniform grill design or colour, or only allow grills set inside the window opening rather than projecting box grills. Check before ordering. Independent houses and builder floors usually have more freedom, and many owners match grills to the main gate and balcony railings.

How are window grills priced?

Grills are usually priced by area or by weight, and the material, section sizes, design, finish, openable panels and fixing conditions all move the figure. We don't publish rates for this work; every MS window grill is quoted after a ₹99 site visit in Gurugram, Noida and the rest of Delhi NCR, adjusted against your bill if you go ahead. Measuring all windows in one visit lets the whole house be planned as one design.

Common questions

Which window grill design is best for security?

One with solid or thick bars set close together, welded into a stiff frame and fixed into concrete or solid brick with anchor fasteners. CNC jaali in a strong frame and close vertical bars both work well. The fixing matters as much as the design, because a grill held only in plaster can be levered out.

Should window grills be openable?

At least one window per floor should have an openable grill that locks from the inside, so there is an exit route in a fire. Keep the key near the window but out of reach from outside, and make sure everyone at home knows where it is.

Grill ki rod mein kitna gap hona chahiye?

A commonly used guide is to keep openings under about 4 inches, or 100 mm, so nobody can squeeze through and a small child can't get their head stuck. Use closer spacing on low windows and in children's rooms, and avoid low horizontal bars that can be climbed like a ladder.

Are stainless steel window grills better than MS?

SS304 grills don't need painting and resist rust, which helps on high floors where repainting is difficult. MS grills cost less, take any colour and are easier to make in ornate designs, but need a good primer and paint or powder coat. Both are secure if the bars and fixing are right.

Can I install a box grill in a society flat?

It depends on your society. Many RWAs and maintenance agencies control the building's external look and may ask for a uniform design or only allow grills inside the window opening. Check the rules with your RWA before ordering, and keep the approval in writing.
