Window grill loose from the wall in Gurgaon: why it pulls out and how it's re-fixed
A grill comes loose because the lugs holding it in the wall have rusted, were only set in plaster, or the screws have pulled out of hollow block. A loose grill is a security and falling hazard. The fix is re-anchoring into solid masonry or concrete with proper fasteners, and treating the rust that caused it.

MS window grills in Gurugram's older sectors, Palam Vihar and old Gurgaon, and in Noida's earlier sectors were mostly fixed with flat steel lugs cemented into holes in the wall. Decades of monsoons later, some of those grills rattle in the wind, and some can be pulled outward by hand. On an upper floor that's a falling hazard; on a ground floor it's a security hole.
The short answer
Hold the grill and push and pull it gently. If the whole grill moves, the wall fixings have failed. If only one section moves, a weld between the grill frame and its lug has cracked. Either way it needs re-anchoring, and the rust that caused it needs treating.
Why grills come loose
Rusted lugs inside the wall
Water runs down the grill and into the hole around each lug. Steel rusts and expands as it does, cracking the cement around it. Eventually the lug is loose in a crumbling socket. You'll often see a brown streak and cracked plaster at each fixing point, which is the same process described in rust stains on the wall.
Fixings only in plaster
If the lugs or screws only went into plaster, not the brick or concrete behind it, they had little grip from day one.
Screws in hollow blocks
Many newer buildings use hollow concrete or fly-ash blocks. Ordinary rawl plugs and screws in a hollow block pull out under load. Chemical anchors or through-fixings are needed.
Cracked welds at the lugs
If the lug is solid but the grill moves, the weld joining the grill frame to the lug has cracked, often from rust starting under the paint at the joint.
Something leaning on or hung from it
AC outdoor units, plant boxes and clothes drying racks hung on grills add weight they weren't designed for.
Checks you can do
- From inside, push the grill outward at each corner gently. Note which corners move.
- Look at each fixing point for cracked plaster, rust streaks or a gap around the lug.
- Look closely at welds where the grill meets the lugs for a thin rust line.
- Remove anything heavy hung on the grill, especially on upper floors.
| What moves | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Whole grill, cracked plaster at lugs | Lugs rusted in their sockets | Cut out, treat, re-anchor into masonry |
| Whole grill, no visible damage | Fixings only in plaster | New anchors into brick or concrete |
| Screws pulling out of the wall | Hollow blocks, wrong plugs | Chemical anchors or through-bolts |
| One section, lug stays put | Cracked weld at the lug | Grind and re-weld, paint |
| Sags under a plant box or AC | Overloaded grill | Separate bracket for the load |
Re-fix or replace the grill?
If the grill itself is sound and only the fixings have failed, re-anchoring and rust treatment is the right job. Replace it when the bars are rusted thin, the design is outdated or unsafe for escape, or you're also changing the window. A new MS window grill can include an openable section for fire escape and be fixed with anchors suited to your wall. Our window grill designs and safety guide covers that, and hot-dip galvanising explains the longest-lasting rust protection for grills facing rain. If a balcony rather than a window is involved, see MS balcony railing.
How FabWise handles it
Send photos of the grill, close-ups of each fixing point, and tell us the floor level and whether the wall is brick, block or concrete if you know. If someone needs to check it, the visit is ₹99 in our Delhi NCR cities, adjusted against the bill. Re-fixing and new grills are quoted after the visit.
Preventing it
Seal the gap where each lug enters the wall with exterior sealant so water can't run in. Repaint grills every few years before rust gets under the paint, particularly on west- and south-facing walls that take the monsoon. Don't hang AC units or heavy planters on grills; give them their own brackets.

Common questions
Why is my window grill coming loose from the wall?
Usually the steel lugs inside the wall have rusted and cracked their cement, or the grill was only fixed into plaster or hollow blocks. Less often, the weld between the grill and its lug has cracked. All need re-anchoring into solid masonry with the right fasteners.
Is a loose window grill dangerous?
Yes, on two counts. On upper floors it can fall or give way if someone leans on it, and on ground floors it's easy to pull out for a break-in. Keep weight off it, tie it back if it's pulling away, and get it re-fixed promptly.
Can a loose grill be fixed without replacing it?
Usually yes, if the bars and frame are sound. The old fixings are cut out, rust is treated, and the grill is re-anchored into brick or concrete with suitable anchors. Replacement is worth it only when the grill is badly rusted or unsafe in design.
Grill deewar se hil rahi hai, kya cement bhar dein?
Packing fresh cement around a rusted lug only hides the problem for a while; the rust keeps expanding and cracking it. The rusted part should be cleaned or cut out and the grill re-anchored into solid masonry, then the joint sealed against water.
