Gate hinge broken in Gurgaon: making it safe and getting it fixed properly
Gate hinges break because the leaf is heavier than the hinge, pin or pillar fixing was designed for, or because rust has eaten the pin or weld. Prop the gate safely first. The fix is new heavier hinges welded to sound steel and anchored firmly into the pillar, not a quick weld over a cracked joint.

A gate hanging from one hinge is a genuine danger, especially where children play near the entrance of a Gurugram builder floor or a Noida kothi. MS gates are heavy, and a leaf that falls can injure someone badly. So this page starts with safety, then explains why hinges fail and what a lasting repair looks like.
Do this first
The short answer
Gate hinges usually fail at one of three points: the pin wears or rusts through, the weld between hinge and gate cracks, or the fixing into the pillar pulls out. Each needs a different repair, and the right one depends on the weight of the leaf.
Why gate hinges break
Leaf too heavy for the hinge
A tall, wide leaf with sheet cladding or decorative jaali can be far heavier than the light pin hinges it was hung on. The top hinge takes most of the pull and fails first.
Rusted pins and knuckles
The pin sits in a knuckle that collects rain. Without grease, it rusts, wears thin and eventually shears.
Cracked weld
A hinge tacked on with short welds, or welded onto thin hollow tube, cracks under repeated swinging. You'll often see a hairline rust line along the weld before it gives way. See welding joint cracked for spotting this early.
Pillar fixing pulled out
Hinges bolted into brick, or grouted into a hollow block pillar, loosen as the gate swings. The plaster cracks around the fixing and the whole hinge tilts.
Gate slammed or used as a swing
Wind slamming an unlatched gate, or children riding it, multiplies the load on the hinges.
Checks you can make from a safe distance
- Look at the hinge that has failed: is the pin snapped, the weld cracked, or the bracket pulled out of the pillar?
- Check the other hinge for the same signs: rust lines along welds, cracks in the pillar plaster, a pin worn into an oval.
- Check whether the gate was dragging on the ground before it broke; that adds a lot of strain.
- Photograph everything before anyone moves the gate, so the repair can be planned.
| Where it broke | What it tells you | Proper repair |
|---|---|---|
| Pin snapped or worn through | Undersized or rusted pin | New heavier hinges with greaseable pins |
| Weld between hinge and gate | Short welds or thin tube | Grind back, reinforce, full weld |
| Bracket pulled out of the pillar | Weak anchor in brick or block | Re-anchor into concrete or add a steel post |
| Both hinges loose | Gate too heavy for fittings | Heavier hinges, maybe a wheel or track |
| Pillar itself cracked | Masonry can't carry the leaf | Pillar repair before re-hanging |
Repair or replace the gate?
Most broken hinges are repairable: new heavier hinges, a proper full-length weld and a solid anchor. Replace the gate if its frame is rusted through near the hinges, or if the leaf is simply too heavy for its pillar. A new MS main gate can be designed lighter, with a support wheel, or split into more leaves. For a wide opening, an MS sliding gate avoids hinge loads altogether; the sliding gate automation guide covers that route. What a new gate costs is explained in the MS gate price guide, and the glossary entry on mild steel explains why section size matters.
How FabWise handles a broken hinge
- Send photos of the broken hinge, the other hinge and the full gate on WhatsApp, along with its rough height and width.
- We'll tell you whether it needs new hinges, a re-anchor or a bigger rethink.
- A site visit in our Delhi NCR cities is ₹99, adjusted against the bill if you go ahead.
- You get a written quote for the repair; metal work is quoted after the visit.
Preventing it next time
Grease hinge pins twice a year, before and after the monsoon. Fit a gate stop and a latch so wind can't slam the leaf. Fix a dragging gate early; the extra strain is what usually finishes off the hinge. Keep paint intact around welds so rust can't start in the joint.

Common questions
Can a broken gate hinge be welded back?
Sometimes, but welding a cracked hinge back on as it was usually fails again. A lasting repair grinds back to clean steel, uses a heavier hinge with a proper pin and a full weld, and anchors the pillar side into solid concrete or a steel post.
Why do heavy gate hinges keep breaking?
Usually the leaf is heavier than the hinges or the pillar fixing can carry, or the pins rust and wear. Dragging gates and wind slamming add strain. Heavier hinges, greaseable pins, a support wheel or a stop and latch solve most repeat failures.
Gate ka kabza toot gaya hai, kya abhi gate band kar sakte hain?
Don't swing it. Prop the free end on bricks or blocks and tie it to the pillar so it can't fall. A broken hinge can let the whole leaf drop. Then send us photos on WhatsApp and we'll plan the repair.
Do you repair gate hinges in Noida and Gurgaon?
Yes, in Gurugram, Noida and our other Delhi NCR cities. Send photos first. If someone needs to see the gate, the visit is ₹99, adjusted against the final bill, and the repair is quoted in writing after the visit, so you know the scope before work starts.
