Sliding gate stuck on its track in Gurgaon: what's causing it and the fix
A sliding gate that sticks is usually running on worn or seized wheels, over a track blocked with gravel and mud, or along a track that has bent or sunk. Clear the track first. If it still binds, the wheels, track or top guide rollers need repair or replacement.

A sliding gate is a heavy steel panel balanced on two wheels and kept upright by guide rollers at the top. When everything is aligned, one hand moves it. When any of those parts wears or shifts, the gate needs a shove, jerks halfway, or stops dead. On a driveway in Gurugram's DLF phases or a Noida sector house, that's a daily irritation and, if the gate is motorised, a burnt-out motor waiting to happen.
Start here: is it the track or the gate?
Push the gate slowly through its full travel and watch the wheels. If they stop turning and skid, the wheels are seized. If the gate lifts or jolts over a point on the track, something is on or wrong with the track. If the gate leans and rubs against the top guide or the post, alignment is off.
Causes, most common first
Gravel, mud and debris in the track
Ground tracks collect everything: gravel kicked up by cars, monsoon mud, dry leaves, a dropped toy. A small stone in the track is enough to stop a wheel. During the monsoon, a track that sits lower than the driveway fills with water and silt.
Worn or seized wheels
Gate wheels carry the full weight of the gate. Their bearings fill with dust and rust, and a V-groove wheel wears a flat or a lip. A seized wheel drags the gate along the track instead of rolling, and you'll often see a shiny scuff on the rail.
A bent, sunk or uneven track
Heavy vehicles driven over the track flatten or bend it. A track set in concrete that has settled sinks in one place. Wherever the track dips or kinks, the gate sticks.
Top guide rollers misaligned or worn
If the guide rollers at the top are too tight, rusted or the post they're on has leaned, the gate binds against them. A gate that's fine at one end and stiff at the other often points here.
The gate itself has bent or twisted
An impact from a car, or a gate made of light section that has twisted in the sun, won't run straight. It rubs on the guides and lifts one wheel.
| What happens | Probable cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stops dead at one spot | Debris or a kink in the track | Clear or straighten / replace the track |
| Wheels skid instead of turning | Seized bearings | Replace the wheels |
| Grinds along the whole run | Worn wheel groove, rusty track | New wheels; clean or replace the track |
| Binds at the top or against the post | Guide rollers misaligned or worn | Re-align or replace the top guides |
| Leans, rubs, lifts a wheel | Gate frame bent or twisted | Straighten, or rebuild the gate |
Safe checks you can do
- Sweep and scrape the full length of the track, then hose the silt out. Check that any drain slot at the low end is clear.
- If the gate is motorised, switch to manual release before testing it by hand, and keep hands clear of the rack and pinion.
- Look at the wheels at both ends. Wobble on the axle, flat spots or rust on the bearing are all signs they're done.
- Check the top guides for rust and for a post that has leaned.
- Don't lift or prise the gate off its track. A sliding gate can weigh well over a hundred kilos and can topple.
Repair or rebuild?
New wheels, a repaired track section and re-set top guides fix most stuck gates. A rebuild makes sense when the gate frame has twisted or rusted through, when the track is set too low and floods every monsoon, or when you want to add a motor and the existing gate isn't straight or balanced enough. A new MS sliding gate can be built with sealed-bearing wheels, a raised track with drainage, and a frame stiff enough to stay straight. If your driveway has room, a swing MS main gate avoids ground tracks altogether. The MS gate price guide and the main gate design guide explain the options.
How FabWise handles it
Send a video of the gate being pushed through its full travel, and photos of the wheels, the track and the top guides, on WhatsApp. If it needs a site visit, the visit is ₹99, adjusted against your bill if you proceed. Gate repairs and new gates are quoted after the visit; there's no published rate for this work.
Prevention
Sweep the track weekly and after every storm. Before the monsoon, make sure water can drain out of the track. Grease the wheel bearings only if they are greasable, and wipe excess so it doesn't collect dust. Keep the gate painted; rust on the wheel axles is a common reason they seize, as covered in gate and grill rusting.
If your swing gate rather than a slider is the problem, read gate sagging and dragging. Browse the metal fabrication catalogue, or see how gate work runs in the DLF phases. Send us a video on WhatsApp and we'll tell you where it's binding.
Common questions
Why is my sliding gate so hard to push?
Most often there's gravel or mud in the track, or the wheels have seized and are dragging instead of rolling. Clean the track first. If it's still stiff, check the wheels for rusted bearings or flat spots, and the top guide rollers for binding. A bent or sunk track can also make it stick at one point.
Can sliding gate wheels be replaced?
Yes. The gate is lifted and supported, the old wheels are removed and new ones fitted to suit the track profile. It's a common repair. Choose wheels with sealed bearings, which keep dust and water out much better than open ones, especially through the monsoon.
My automatic sliding gate motor is struggling. Is the motor faulty?
Often not. A motor struggles when the gate itself is hard to move. Put the motor in manual release and push the gate by hand. If it's stiff, fix the track, wheels or guides first. Getting the gate running freely protects the motor too.
Sliding gate atak jata hai, kya karein?
Pehle track saaf karein: kankar, mitti aur patte nikal dein. If the gate still sticks, the wheels or the top guide rollers are usually worn or rusted. Send a video of the gate moving on WhatsApp and we'll tell you whether it's a wheel change, a track repair or something bigger.
How do I stop my sliding gate track filling with water in the monsoon?
The track needs a slight fall and a drain point at its low end, and the ground around it shouldn't be higher than the track. If the track was set into a dip, it will keep flooding. Re-laying or raising the track with drainage is the lasting fix.
