Iron gate or grill rusting in Gurgaon: how to stop it and when to rebuild

Mild steel rusts wherever the paint has cracked and water can sit: the bottom rail, welded joints and hollow sections that trap moisture. Surface rust is stopped by scraping back to bare metal, priming and repainting. Rust that has eaten through the section means cutting out and replacing it, or a new gate.

Painted mild steel main gate at a house entrance, showing the bottom rail and hinges

Every MS (mild steel) gate and grill in Gurugram is fighting the same battle. Steel left bare rusts; the paint is the only thing between it and the weather. A monsoon that drives rain into every joint, followed by a summer of 45°C sun that cracks the paint film, finds the weak spots fast. The good news is that most rust caught early is a repaint, not a rebuild.

Why it rusts where it does

Paint failure at the bottom rail

The bottom of a gate sits closest to the ground, takes splashes from the road, and collects water against the plinth. It's almost always the first place to rust.

Water standing on horizontal members and inside hollow sections

Flat tops of rails, the inside of box sections and pipe without drain holes all hold water after rain. Hollow sections rust from inside, out of sight, which is why a gate that looks fine can suddenly show holes.

Welded joints with no primer

Welds are rough and hard to paint well. If the welds were not ground and primed before painting, the joints rust first. Rust streaks bleeding from every joint is the giveaway.

A single coat of enamel over bare steel

Paint alone, without a rust-inhibiting primer, lifts within a season or two. Many grills are given one coat to save time, and they show it in the first monsoon.

Scratches and wear from use

Latches, hinges, the spot where the gate meets its stop and the place where everyone pushes it open: paint wears through and bare steel is exposed every day.

What you can safely do yourself

  • Wash off dust and bird droppings, which hold moisture against the paint.
  • Wire-brush small patches of surface rust back to firm metal, wipe clean, and touch up with a rust-inhibiting primer and then paint. Do it in dry weather.
  • Clear dirt and leaves from the bottom of the gate and the track or plinth so water doesn't sit there.
  • Press on the worst spots with a screwdriver. If it goes through, the section is perforated and needs a fabricator.
  • Don't paint over rust without removing it. Paint seals the moisture in and the rust carries on underneath.

Repaint, repair or replace?

If the rust is on the surface and the steel is sound, a proper repaint (scrape, prime, two top coats) is the answer. Where only the bottom rail or a few bars have rusted through, they can be cut out and new sections welded in, then the whole gate primed and painted. Replace the gate when the rust is widespread, the hollow sections have rotted from inside, the gate has sagged with it (see gate sagging and dragging), or the repair would cost close to a new one. A new MS main gate or window safety grill can be made with drain holes, ground and primed welds, and a powder coat or a better paint system, so it doesn't repeat the same failure. The MS gate price guide explains what affects cost, and the main gate design guide covers the choices.

How FabWise handles a rusting gate or grill

Send photos on WhatsApp: the whole gate or grill, close-ups of the worst rust, the bottom rail, and the hinges. That's usually enough to say whether it's a repaint, a section repair or a new gate. If we need to see it, the site visit is ₹99, adjusted against the bill if you go ahead. Metal fabrication is quoted after the visit; there's no published rate.

How to stop the rust coming back

  1. Inspect the gate and grills after each monsoon, and touch up chips before they spread.
  2. Make sure hollow sections have drain holes at the bottom and caps at the top.
  3. Keep the ground under the gate clear and draining, so water doesn't pond against it.
  4. On a new gate, ask about powder coating or a zinc-rich primer; both last much longer than enamel alone.
  5. Repaint the whole gate every few years, before the paint film fails rather than after.

Common questions

How do I stop my iron gate from rusting?

Remove the rust back to firm metal with a wire brush or grinder, wipe it clean and dry, apply a rust-inhibiting primer, then two coats of paint. Keep water from standing on or under the gate and touch up chips each year. Painting straight over rust doesn't stop it; it carries on underneath.

Is powder coating better than paint for an MS gate?

Powder coating usually lasts longer than brush-applied enamel because it's a thicker, baked-on film, but it has to be done on a new or fully stripped gate in a coating plant. For an existing gate on site, a good primer and paint system is the practical option. Either way, preparation matters most.

Can a rusted gate be repaired or does it need replacing?

Surface rust is a repaint. Sections that have rusted through, usually the bottom rail or a few bars, can be cut out and replaced with new steel, then the whole gate repainted. If rust is widespread or the hollow sections have rotted from inside, a new gate is usually better value.

Gate mein jung lag gaya hai, paint karne se theek ho jayega?

Only if the rust is removed first. If you paint over rust, it keeps spreading under the paint. Scrape or brush it back to clean metal, apply a rust primer, then paint. If the metal has holes or crumbles, that part needs to be cut out and replaced by a fabricator.

Why do window grills rust faster at the bottom?

The bottom bar and the joints where bars meet the frame hold rain water and dust, and the window sill splashes water back onto them. Welds that weren't ground and primed also rust first. Keeping the sill draining and touching up the bottom bar after each monsoon helps a lot.
