Safety door rattling in Gurgaon: why the grill door shakes and how to stop it
A safety door rattles when it has too much play in its frame: worn hinge pins, a lock keeper set too far from the latch, no rubber stop on the frame, or mesh panels loose in their beading. Adding stops and resetting the keeper often cures it; worn hinges need replacing.

In many Gurugram and Noida apartments, an MS safety door sits outside the wooden main door, letting in air and keeping the flat secure. In a lift lobby that catches wind, or when a neighbour's door slams, a loose safety door clangs loudly enough to be a nuisance for the whole floor. The rattle also wears the hinges and lock faster.
The short answer
Shake the closed door gently and listen to where the noise comes from: the hinge side, the lock side, or the panels in the middle. Each points to a different loose part, and most can be fixed without changing the door.
Where the rattle comes from
Lock side: the latch doesn't hold the door tight
If the keeper (strike plate) on the frame is a few millimetres too far from the latch, the door shuts but can move in and out. Every gust knocks it against the frame. This is the commonest cause.
No rubber stops on the frame
Steel against steel is loud. Good safety doors have small rubber buffers or a rubber gasket where the door meets the frame. Many don't, or the rubber has perished.
Hinge side: worn pins
Pin-and-knuckle hinges wear oval with use. The door then drops slightly and has play top and bottom. You'll hear a knock from the hinge side and may see the door rubbing the frame at the top on the lock side.
Loose panels or mesh
Perforated sheet, decorative jaali or mosquito mesh panels are held in the frame with beading, screws or tack welds. When those loosen, the panel buzzes inside the frame.
Frame loose in the wall
If the frame itself moves when you push it, its fixings into the wall have failed. This is less common but more serious for security.
Checks you can do
- Close and latch the door, then push and pull it at the lock side. Visible movement means the keeper needs adjusting.
- Lift the door by its handle while it's open. Movement at the hinges means worn pins.
- Tap each panel with a knuckle. A buzz or rattle shows a loose panel.
- Push on the frame itself. If it moves, the frame fixings have failed.
| Where the noise is | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Lock side, door moves when latched | Keeper too far from latch | Re-position or pack the keeper |
| All round, metal-on-metal clang | No rubber stops or gasket | Fit rubber buffers or gasket |
| Hinge side knock | Worn hinge pins | New hinges or bushes |
| Middle of the door, buzzing | Panel or mesh loose in frame | Re-fix beading, tack weld |
| Whole frame moves | Frame fixings failed in the wall | Re-anchor the frame |
Repair or replace?
Keepers, buffers, hinges and panel fixings are all repairable. Replace the door if the frame is rusted at the bottom where floor-cleaning water collects, if the lock is a weak single-point latch you'd rather upgrade, or if it no longer suits how you use the entrance. A new MS safety door can include a multi-point lock, a rubber gasket, and a mesh panel; for the mesh itself, see mosquito mesh. Choosing the right steel and finish is explained under mild steel and powder coating. If you compare quotes, our guide on how to compare fabrication quotes helps.
How FabWise handles it
Send a short video of the door being shaken while latched, and a photo of the hinges and lock, on WhatsApp. In most cases we can tell the cause from that. If a visit is needed in our Delhi NCR cities, it's ₹99, adjusted against the bill when the work goes ahead. Safety door work is quoted after the visit.
Prevention
Grease hinge pins twice a year and wipe floor-cleaning water off the bottom rail so it doesn't rust. Close the door with the handle rather than letting it slam. If your society lobby is windy, ask for a door closer or a magnetic catch so the door doesn't swing and bang.

Common questions
How do I stop my safety door from rattling?
Find where the play is. Most often the lock keeper is too far from the latch, so the door can move when shut; moving or packing the keeper fixes it. Fitting rubber buffers where the door meets the frame stops the metal-on-metal clang.
Why does my grill safety door bang in the wind?
Because it isn't held tight when latched and there's nothing soft between the door and the frame. Wind pushes it back and forth. Adjusting the keeper and adding rubber stops or a gasket usually stops the banging completely.
Safety door hilta hai aur awaaz karta hai, kya repair ho sakta hai?
Yes. Usually the lock keeper needs adjusting, rubber stops need fitting, or the hinge pins are worn. These are small repairs. A new door is needed only if the frame is rusted badly at the bottom or you want a stronger, multi-point lock.
Can you add a better lock to my existing safety door?
Often yes, if the frame has room for the lock body and the steel around it is sound. Some upgrades need a new lock box welded in. Send photos of the door and current lock on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what's possible.
