How to Compare Fabrication Quotes Without Getting Caught Out
Two quotes for the same gate can differ by a third and both be honest, or one can hide a thinner section and a cheaper finish. A buyer's checklist for reading any fabrication quote line by line.

To compare fabrication quotes fairly, put them side by side on six things: the material and its grade, the section sizes and thickness, the finish, the hardware and its brand, exactly what is included, and the payment and timeline terms. A quote that is cheaper because it leaves one of these vague is not cheaper; it's unfinished. This applies to any job, whether a gate, a railing, a terrace shed, windows or glass work, in Gurugram, Noida or anywhere in Delhi NCR.
Fabrication is unusual among home purchases because two very different products can be described in the same words. "MS gate, 10 ft x 6 ft, with paint" could mean a sturdy gate that lasts decades or a thin one that sags in two years. Here's how to tell them apart on paper.
Why do fabrication quotes vary so much?
Most of the difference comes from what's hidden inside the description. Steel is priced by weight, so a frame in a thinner wall section can cost noticeably less while looking identical on the day it's fitted. A finish of one coat of primer and one of enamel costs far less than powder coating or galvanising, and the difference only shows after two monsoons. Hardware can be a branded floor spring or an unbranded copy. Installation may or may not include fixing into concrete, making good the plaster, transport to the fourth floor and taking away the debris. Line these up and the gap between quotes usually explains itself.
What should each line of a quote tell you?
| Item | A clear quote says | A vague quote says |
|---|---|---|
| Material | MS (mild steel), SS304, aluminium, uPVC, with the grade where it matters | "Iron", "steel", "SS" |
| Sections | Size and wall thickness, e.g. 40x40mm box, 2mm wall; or the section series | "Heavy pipe", "good quality" |
| Infill or sheet | Sheet type and thickness, glass make and thickness | "Sheet", "glass" |
| Finish | Primer plus coats of enamel, or powder coat, or galvanised plus paint; colour | "With paint" |
| Hardware | Brand and model of hinges, locks, rollers, floor spring, closer | "Hardware included" |
| Measurements | Each item's size and the quantity it's priced on (sq ft, running ft, kg, per piece) | One lump sum |
| Installation | Fixing method, anchors, any civil work, transport, debris | "Fitting extra" or nothing |
| Terms | Advance, balance, timeline, validity, warranty if any | Verbal |
How do you check the material and its grade?
For steel work, mild steel is the normal material for gates, grills, sheds and staircases; ask whether it's a branded mill product or unbranded. For stainless steel railings and fittings, the grade decides how it behaves outdoors: SS304 resists rust far better than SS202, which can show rust spots on a balcony within a few seasons. Our SS304 vs SS202 glossary entry and the SS railing grades guide explain the difference. For windows, ask for the uPVC profile brand or the aluminium section series; for glass, the make, type (toughened or laminated) and thickness.
Why do section sizes and thickness matter so much?
Because they decide strength, and they're invisible once the job is painted. A gate frame in a 2mm wall box section and one in 1.2mm look the same from the road. The thinner one flexes, its welds crack, and it starts to drag; see gate sagging and dragging and welding joint cracked. When you compare quotes, write each quote's section sizes next to each other. If one doesn't list them, ask; if they won't put them in writing, that's an answer in itself.
What finish are you actually paying for?
The finish is where outdoor metalwork in Delhi NCR lives or dies. Monsoon humidity, dust that holds moisture, and water from washing all attack bare steel. The common levels, from basic to best:
- Primer plus one or two coats of enamel paint, applied after fabrication. Needs touching up every couple of years.
- [Powder coating](/glossary/powder-coating), baked on in a workshop: tougher and more even, though site welds and cut ends need care.
- [Hot-dip galvanising](/glossary/hot-dip-galvanising) before painting or powder coating: the longest-lasting protection, and the most involved.
A quote that just says "painted" usually means the first. Ask how the steel is cleaned before painting, because paint over mill scale and rust doesn't last. Our MS gate rust protection guide covers this in depth, and metal gate or grill rusting shows what happens when it's skipped.
Is the hardware named, or just "included"?
Hinges, wheels, locks, rollers, floor springs, closers and handles wear out long before the frame does, so they decide how the job feels every day. A good quote names the brand and model, or at least the type and material, such as SS304 hinges rather than "SS hinges". For glass work, the floor spring brand and the fittings' material matter most. For sliding gates, the wheel and track type. For windows, the hardware set and the gasket. Unbranded hardware isn't always bad, but you can't compare two quotes until you know what each one is offering.
What should "all-inclusive" cover?
"All-inclusive" is only useful if you know what it includes. Before you sign, check whether the quote covers:
- Site measurement and the drawings or design shown to you.
- All materials, including the finish and the hardware named above.
- Fabrication and transport to site, including carrying material up stairs where there's no lift.
- Installation: anchoring, welding on site, sealing, and any core cutting or drilling into concrete.
- Making good: patching plaster or tiles disturbed by fixing, and cleaning up.
- Removal of debris and, where relevant, the old gate, grill or window.
- Taxes, if the quote is given before or after them.
At FabWise, the quotation is all-inclusive for the agreed scope, given in writing, usually within about 2 hours of the site visit, and valid for 3 days. Payment is 50% advance, which starts fabrication, and 50% on completion. The FAQ sets out these terms in full; whoever you choose, insist on the same clarity.
Which red flags should make you pause?
- No sizes or thickness anywhere on the quote, only a total.
- "Best quality", "heavy", "branded" without saying what or which brand.
- A per-kg rate with no estimated weight, so the final bill can grow.
- A very large advance, or full payment before work starts.
- No mention of finish, or "paint" with no detail.
- Installation listed as extra without a figure, or not mentioned at all.
- A verbal quote, or one on a scrap of paper with no name and date.
- A price far below every other quote, with no explanation of why.
How do you compare quotes that are priced differently?
Fabricators price in different units: per square foot for gates, grills, sheds and glass; per running foot for railings; per kg for heavy structural work; per piece for doors and windows. To compare, convert everything to the same basis. Work out the area or length yourself, with the area calculator for square footage, and for glass partitions the glass partition cost calculator shows how our rates apply. For per-kg quotes, ask for the estimated total weight and the section list behind it.
Our pricing guides explain what drives the number for common jobs: MS gate price, SS railing price, terrace shed cost, uPVC window price, and the full pricing hub.
Who else should see the quote?
For a society job, such as railings across a tower or gates for a whole block, the RWA committee should compare quotes on the same written specification, so every vendor prices the same thing; see housing societies. For commercial and developer projects, share the architect's drawings with every bidder for the same reason; see builders and developers.
We quote metal fabrication, railings, sheds, windows and glass across Delhi NCR, from Gurgaon and Noida to Delhi and Faridabad, and larger metal work projects in cities such as Lucknow by arrangement on WhatsApp. If you already have another quote, book a site visit and compare ours against it line by line.
Common questions
How do I compare two fabrication quotes for a gate?
Put them side by side on material, section sizes and wall thickness, finish, hardware brand, what installation includes, and payment terms. Convert both to the same unit, such as per square foot. If one quote leaves any of these out, ask for it in writing before comparing. The cheaper quote often hides a thinner section or a basic paint finish.
What should an all-inclusive fabrication quote include?
Measurement, materials with the named finish and hardware, fabrication, transport to site, installation and anchoring, making good any plaster or tiles disturbed, debris removal and clear tax treatment. Ask the vendor to confirm each item in writing, because all-inclusive means different things to different people.
Is a per-kg rate better than a per-sq-ft rate?
Neither is better by itself. Per-kg pricing is common for heavy structural work; per-square-foot for gates, grills, sheds and glass. The risk with per-kg is a final weight that grows, so always ask for the estimated total weight and the list of sections behind it before you agree.
Sabse sasta quotation lena sahi hai kya?
Only if it matches the others on specification. A much cheaper quote usually means a thinner section, a basic paint finish, unbranded hardware or installation left out. Ask every vendor for sizes, thickness, finish and hardware in writing, then compare like with like. The right quote is the clearest one at a fair price.
How much advance should I pay a fabricator?
Terms vary, but you should never pay in full before work starts. FabWise works on 50% advance, which starts fabrication, and 50% on completion of the agreed work. Whatever the split, get it in writing on the quote along with the timeline and what counts as completion.
What are red flags in a fabrication quote?
No sizes or thickness, vague words like best quality or heavy pipe, a per-kg rate with no weight estimate, no finish described, installation not mentioned, a large upfront payment, or a verbal quote with no name or date. Any of these makes the quote impossible to hold the vendor to.
