Rust spots on a stainless steel railing in Gurgaon: why 'stainless' rusts
Stainless steel rusts when its protective surface film is broken or too weak: lower-grade SS202, iron dust from nearby grinding, acid floor cleaners, or heat-tinted welds that weren't cleaned. Surface spots often clean off. Rust that keeps returning, or pits at the welds, usually points to the grade.

Why stainless steel can rust at all
Stainless steel isn't rust-proof. It stays bright because the chromium in it forms a thin, invisible oxide film on the surface that heals itself when scratched. Anything that breaks that film faster than it can heal, or a grade with too little chromium and nickel to form a strong one, lets ordinary rust appear. In Delhi NCR, with dusty dry months, a humid monsoon and a lot of construction around every new tower in Gurugram, SS railings get tested hard.
The usual causes, and how to tell them apart
SS202 instead of SS304
SS202 is a lower-cost grade with less nickel and chromium than SS304. It looks identical when new and is widely used for railings. Outdoors it often shows brown spots and streaks within a season or two, worst at welds and on the top of rails where water sits. See SS304 vs SS202 for the differences.
Iron contamination
When someone cuts or grinds mild steel near a stainless railing, a grille being made on the next balcony or a gate being welded downstairs, fine iron particles land on the stainless and rust there. The spots look like freckles, sit on the surface and are often on the side facing the work.
Acid and bleach cleaners
Acid-based tile and floor cleaners used to wash balcony floors and stairs splash the base of the posts. Bleach and toilet cleaners attack the film too. The rust collects at post bases and lower rails.
Welds that weren't cleaned
Welding leaves a straw-to-blue heat tint around joints. If it's not cleaned and passivated, the weld area has a weaker film and rusts first, even on a good grade.
Tea staining from dirt and moisture
A light brown film, especially on rough-finished or neglected railings near roads, often comes from dust and moisture sitting on the surface. It cleans off but returns if the railing is never washed.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Freckle-like spots on one side | Iron dust from nearby work | Clean with a stainless cleaner; protect during work |
| Spots at post bases and lower rails | Acid or bleach floor cleaners | Clean; change floor cleaner; rinse posts |
| Brown ring around welds | Uncleaned heat tint | Clean and passivate the welds |
| Rust returns soon everywhere | SS202 or lower grade | Replace exposed parts with SS304 |
| Pits or holes at welds | Deep corrosion | Check strength; replace the section |
What you can safely try
- Wash the railing with warm water and mild soap, then dry it.
- Treat spots with a cleaner made for stainless steel or a mild citric or oxalic acid product, using a soft non-scratch pad, along the grain.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry.
- Note where the spots return, and how quickly.
Is my railing SS202 or SS304?
You can't tell reliably by eye or with a magnet; both can be slightly magnetic after fabrication. Test kits and supplier records are more reliable. In practice, if rust keeps coming back within weeks of a careful clean, and especially at welds, the railing is most likely a lower grade. Our SS railing grades guide compares 202, 304 and 316.
How FabWise handles it
Send photos on WhatsApp of the rust spots, the welds and the post bases, and tell us the floor and how old the railing is. If a visit is needed in Delhi NCR, it's ₹99, adjusted against the final bill if you go ahead; railing work is quoted after the visit, with no published rate. Where the grade is the problem, replacing the exposed rails and posts with an SS balcony railing in SS304 is the lasting fix. The SS railing price guide explains what drives the cost.
Keeping stainless bright
- Wash railings with plain water every few weeks, more often near roads.
- Keep acid floor cleaners off the posts, or rinse them afterwards.
- Cover railings when grinding or welding happens nearby.
Rust is also behind railing wobbling when it reaches post feet, and metal gate and grill rusting covers mild steel. Browse the railings catalogue or see railings in Delhi. Send a photo of the spots on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what it is.
Common questions
Why is my stainless steel railing rusting?
Usually it's a lower grade like SS202, iron dust from nearby cutting or grinding, acid floor cleaners splashing the posts, or welds that weren't cleaned after fabrication. Each breaks or weakens the protective film that keeps stainless bright.
How do I remove rust spots from an SS railing?
Wash with mild soap and water, then treat spots with a stainless steel cleaner or a mild citric or oxalic acid product on a soft non-scratch pad, working along the grain. Rinse and dry. Never use steel wool or a wire brush, which leaves iron behind.
Does a magnet tell me if my railing is SS304?
Not reliably. Both SS304 and SS202 are mostly non-magnetic but can become slightly magnetic after bending and welding. Test kits or the supplier's material records are better. In practice, rust that keeps returning quickly after a careful clean, especially at welds, usually suggests a lower grade.
SS railing pe jung lag rahi hai, kya ye 202 grade hai?
Possibly. SS202 often rusts at welds and on top rails in the monsoon. But iron dust from nearby work or acid floor cleaners can also cause spots, and those clean off. Clean it once carefully; if the rust returns within weeks, the grade is the likely cause.
Is a rusty SS railing unsafe?
Surface spots are cosmetic and usually clean off. Pitting or holes at welds, or rust at the base of posts, can weaken the railing over time. Push each post gently from a safe position: if anything moves or the rust is deep at a joint, have it checked before anyone leans on it.
