SS, glass and MS railings in Faridabad

Railing work in Faridabad mostly comes from independent houses: the plotted HUDA sectors from Sector 7 to Sector 46, the newer plotted sectors further south, and NIT's older homes. Many are being rebuilt or extended upward, which means new staircases, balconies and terraces, each needing a railing. Society flats in Greater Faridabad come with railings from the builder, so there the work is replacement or additions within the society's rules. Here are the decisions, in the order you will make them.

Decision 1: which material?

Decision 2: if steel, which grade?

Ask the grade in writing. SS304 holds up outdoors; SS202 is cheaper and suits indoor stairs but can spot with rust on an open balcony, and Faridabad's industrial air and monsoon do not help. Decision 3: if glass, how is it held?

Glass railings are held in one of two ways: a continuous U-channel fixed to the slab, or individual spigots at intervals. The channel looks cleaner and spreads the load; spigots suit a slab that cannot take a channel cut. Decision 4: height and gaps

Railings should be high enough that an adult cannot topple over, and gapped so a child cannot slip through or climb. Where the work usually is in Faridabad

• HUDA sector houses being rebuilt: new internal staircases and front balconies, often in SS or glass.
• Older NIT homes: replacing MS stair and terrace railings whose base plates have rusted into the concrete.
• Independent floors in new plotted sectors: a shared staircase with a sturdy, low-upkeep railing; front balconies in glass.
• Greater Faridabad societies: changes visible from outside generally need the society's approval; internal duplex staircases are the owner's call.
• Factories and warehouses: mezzanine edges and stair railings, usually in MS.

When an existing railing is the problem

A railing that wobbles usually has a failed base plate or anchor; a handrail that has come loose from the wall needs new fixings into sound masonry; a cracked glass balcony panel should be taped and kept clear until replaced. Send photos first.
