Mild steel balcony and boundary railings
A railing fabricated in mild steel for a balcony, terrace, parapet or boundary wall, made to the measured run. Posts and top rail are usually MS square or round pipe, with infill of square bars, flat-bar patterns, laser-cut panels or decorative castings. MS can be shaped into almost any design and costs less than stainless steel, but it must be protected from rust: primer and enamel paint, powder coat, or hot-dip galvanising before painting for the longest life. Fixed on base plates, embedded in the parapet, or side-mounted. Each run is measured on site and quoted per running foot after the design is agreed.
A mild steel railing is the most flexible railing there is: it can be made in any pattern and painted any colour to match a gate or a facade. The trade-off is rust, so the finish matters as much as the design. FabWise measures the run, agrees the design and finish, then fabricates and fits it. Visits in Gurugram and Noida cost ₹99.
When MS is the right railing material
Choose mild steel when the design matters most, or when the run is long and the budget is fixed. MS can be cut, bent and welded into any pattern, from plain vertical bars to laser-cut panels, and it takes paint or powder coat in any colour. A boundary wall railing that must match an MS gate, a heritage-style balcony with cast motifs, or a long terrace parapet on a tight budget are all natural jobs for MS.
Choose stainless steel when you never want to paint again, and the railing is fully exposed to rain. A stainless steel balcony railing in SS304 costs more upfront but needs only cleaning.
Many houses use both: stainless on the balconies that people lean on daily, and MS on the boundary wall and parapets where colour and design match the main gate. The MS vs SS railing guide walks through the decision with typical lifespans and upkeep.
Designs and finishes that last
The design starts with the posts and top rail, usually MS square pipe for a modern look or round pipe for a softer one. The infill can be plain square bars, a grid or diamond of flat bar, laser-cut MS panels in a jaali or geometric pattern, or classic cast iron motifs welded between bars, which many older Gurugram houses already have.
The finish decides how long the railing looks good. Primer and enamel paint is economical and easy to touch up yourself, but needs repainting every two to three years outdoors. Powder coat is baked on, lasts considerably longer and resists chipping. Hot-dip galvanising coats the steel in zinc before painting; it is the most durable option against rust, especially for boundary railings that sit close to wet soil and garden sprinklers.
Drainage matters as much as paint. Closed pipe ends and bottom rails without water traps keep rain out of the steel. A railing designed so water runs off rather than sitting on it lasts far longer.
Boundary walls, parapets and balconies across Gurugram and Noida
On independent houses in Palam Vihar, South City and the DLF Phases, MS railings usually sit on top of a low boundary wall and match the gate. In Noida sector houses, the same pattern runs from the gate along the front wall, and RWAs in some sectors prefer a uniform look along a street, so it is worth checking.
On builder floors, the terrace parapet often gets an MS railing to bring it up to a safe height, and the front balconies get a design that matches the grills. On older houses, the job is often to replace a railing that has rusted through at the base, using the same design so the facade stays consistent.
In high-rise societies, balcony railings are usually part of the society design. Replacement typically needs RWA approval and may have to follow the original pattern and colour.

What decides the cost of an MS railing
MS railings are quoted per running foot after the visit. The height sets how much steel goes into each foot, and a parapet extension uses less than a full balcony railing. The pipe and bar sizes matter next: heavier sections feel more solid but use more steel. The design follows: plain bars are the quickest to make, flat-bar patterns take longer, and laser-cut panels or cast motifs add material and labour.
The finish is a real choice in the price. Enamel paint is the cheapest, powder coat costs more, and galvanising before painting costs the most but lasts the longest. The fixing method (base plates, posts embedded in the wall, or side brackets) changes the site work.
Finally, the site: corners and changes of level need extra fabrication, upper floors may need scaffolding, and an old railing may need to be cut out and the wall made good. The written, all-inclusive quote lists each item, so you can compare finishes before you decide.
Fitting and looking after an MS railing
The visit costs ₹99 and is adjusted against the final bill. The team measures the run, the height needed and the condition of the wall or floor the railing will fix to. A written, all-inclusive quote usually follows within about two hours, valid for three days. After the 50% advance, the railing is fabricated and finished in the workshop in lengths, then brought to site, fixed, joined and touched up where welding is done in place. The balance is paid on completion.
MS needs regular attention. Before each monsoon, walk the railing and touch up chips and scratches, paying special attention to the bottom of posts and the base plates, where water sits. Repaint an enamel finish every two to three years, sanding off loose paint first. Rust that has bubbled the paint needs scraping back to bare metal and re-priming; see why metal grills and railings rust. A post that moves in its base is a safety issue; read about a wobbling railing.

Common questions
MS railing or SS railing, which is better for a balcony?
MS is cheaper and can be made in any design and colour, but it needs painting every few years to keep rust away. SS304 stainless costs more upfront but needs only cleaning. For an exposed balcony you lean on every day, many people choose SS; for boundary walls and design-led facades, MS is the common choice.
How long does an MS railing last?
With good fabrication and regular repainting, an MS railing can last for decades. Without maintenance, rust can eat through the base of posts within a few years, especially where water sits. Powder coating or galvanising before painting extends the time between repaints considerably.
Boundary wall railing ka rate kya hai?
FabWise does not use a fixed rate, because the cost per running foot depends on height, sections, design and finish. The team measures the wall at a ₹99 visit and sends a written, all-inclusive quote, usually within about two hours, valid for three days.
Is powder coating better than paint for MS railings?
Usually, yes. Powder coat is baked on, so it resists chipping, fading and rust for longer than enamel paint. It costs more and is harder to touch up at home. Enamel is cheaper and easy to repaint yourself. The quote shows both so you can compare.
Can you match a new MS railing to my existing gate?
Yes. Show the gate at the visit or send a photo, and the team will match the pipe sizes, pattern and colour. If the gate was powder coated, the colour is matched from a shade card. Doing the railing and gate together gives the best match.

- What is glass railing spigots?Glass railing spigots are short, heavy stainless steel posts, bolted to the floor or core-drilled into it, that clamp the bottom of each glass panel at two or more points so a railing looks almost frameless without a continuous base channel.
- What is glass railing u-channel?A glass railing U-channel (base shoe) is a continuous aluminium or steel channel fixed to the floor or slab edge that clamps the bottom of the glass panels, letting a balcony or stair railing stand without posts.
- What is laminated glass?Laminated glass is two or more glass panes permanently bonded with a plastic interlayer, usually PVB, so that the glass stays held together and in place when it breaks.
- What is ss304 vs ss202?SS304 and SS202 are two austenitic stainless steel grades: SS304 carries about 18% chromium and 8% nickel and resists rust well outdoors, while SS202 swaps much of the nickel for manganese, costs less and stains sooner in damp or polluted air.
