MS vs SS Railing: Which to Choose for a Gurgaon Balcony
Mild steel or stainless steel for a balcony railing in Gurugram? How each one handles rust, dust and monsoon, what it needs over the years, and when each is the right call.

For most balconies in Gurgaon, a stainless steel (SS) railing in grade SS304 is the lower-effort choice: it does not rust, needs no painting and keeps its look through the monsoon. A mild steel (MS) railing makes sense when you want a heavier, bespoke design, a painted colour to match the building, or a long boundary run where the budget per running ft matters more than upkeep. Both are safe when they are designed and anchored properly.
This guide compares the two honestly for homes in Gurugram and Noida, from builder floors in the DLF Phases to high-rise societies on Dwarka Expressway, so you know what to ask for before anyone measures your balcony.
What is the actual difference between MS and SS?
MS, or mild steel, is ordinary low-carbon steel: the material most people call iron. It is strong, easy to weld and bend, and takes paint or powder coat in any colour. Left bare, it rusts, so an MS balcony railing is only as good as its surface preparation and coating.
SS, or stainless steel, is steel with chromium (and in the better grades, nickel) added, which forms a thin protective layer on the surface. Scratch it and the layer re-forms. That is why an SS balcony railing is left in its own finish, usually satin (hairline) or mirror polish, and never painted.
| Factor | MS (mild steel) railing | SS (stainless steel) railing |
|---|---|---|
| Rust | Rusts if the coating is chipped or water collects | SS304 resists rust in normal city conditions; lower grades can stain |
| Finish | Paint or powder coat, any colour | Satin or mirror polish; metal look only |
| Upkeep | Touch-up and repaint every few years | Wipe down; occasional stainless cleaner |
| Design freedom | High: flat bars, twisted bars, CNC panels, heavy sections | Clean, modern lines: round or square tubes, glass infill |
| Weight and feel | Heavier, solid | Lighter tubes, feels slim |
| Usual use | Boundary walls, terraces, period-style homes, painted facades | Apartment balconies, staircases, terraces you don't want to repaint |
Why does rust decide this in Gurugram?
Gurugram's weather is hard on bare steel in a quiet way. Long, dry, dusty summers are followed by a humid monsoon, and balconies collect both dust and standing water at the base of every post. Dust holds moisture against the metal; a paint chip from a flower pot or a chair leg becomes a rust spot within one season. Air pollution adds to it.
An MS railing survives this well if it is built for it: cleaned of mill scale, primed (red oxide or a zinc-rich primer), then finished in enamel, PU paint or powder coat. Most rust problems on MS railings trace back to a skipped primer coat or welds that were never painted on the inside face. Our guide to a metal gate or grill that is rusting covers the same causes and fixes for railings.
SS304 or SS202: does the grade really matter?
Yes, and it is the most common place a stainless railing quote quietly gets cheaper. SS304 contains more nickel and is the grade normally specified for outdoor railings. SS202 replaces part of the nickel with manganese; it looks identical on installation day but is more prone to brown tea-staining and surface rust spots outdoors, especially on a balcony that gets rain and dust.
- For an open balcony or terrace in Gurugram or Noida, ask for SS304 in writing, on the posts, rails and the fixings.
- SS202 can be acceptable indoors, for example on a covered staircase railing, where it stays dry.
- Tube wall thickness matters as much as grade. Thin-walled tube dents and flexes; ask what gauge or wall thickness is being quoted.
- SS316 is a marine grade. It is rarely needed this far from the sea, but some people choose it for a pool deck.
Which one looks right on your building?
Society apartments and high-rises
In gated societies the balcony railing is usually part of the building's elevation, and many RWAs and maintenance agencies ask residents to keep the external look uniform. That often means matching the builder's original SS or MS design, or adding glass infill behind it rather than replacing it. Check your society's rules before changing anything visible from outside.
Builder floors and independent houses
On a builder floor in Sushant Lok or South City, or a kothi in Old Gurgaon, you usually have more freedom. MS lets you match the main gate and window grills in one colour and one pattern, which many owners prefer. SS suits a cleaner, modern front, and pairs well with toughened glass panels.
Terraces and boundary walls
Long runs on a roof terrace or a boundary wall are where MS earns its place: it can be made in heavier sections, welded on site to awkward angles, and painted to match the parapet. Our railings in Gurgaon page explains how a site visit handles these longer runs.
How safe is each one for children?
Safety comes from the design, not the metal. A good balcony railing, MS or SS, should follow a few widely used rules of thumb:
- Height: commonly around 1 metre (about 3.5 ft) or more from the finished floor for a balcony, and higher on upper floors where people feel the drop. Your building's original railing height is a useful minimum.
- Gaps: vertical bars spaced so a small child cannot put their head through. A common guide is to keep gaps under about 4 inches (100 mm).
- No ladder: avoid horizontal bars low down that a child can climb. Vertical bars or glass infill are safer.
- Anchoring: posts fixed into the slab or a solid beam with proper anchor bolts or embedded plates, not just into plaster or tiles.
If an existing railing already moves when you lean on it, read our note on a railing wobbling before choosing a new one: the fix is often the base fixing rather than the metal.
What changes the price of an MS or SS railing?
Railings are normally priced per running ft, and the per-ft figure moves a lot with the design. We don't publish a rate for this work yet; every railing is quoted after a site visit. The SS railing price guide explains the moving parts in more detail, and the main ones are:
| What changes | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Metal and grade | SS304 costs more than SS202 and MS; the coating system on MS adds to MS |
| Section size and wall thickness | Heavier tubes and bars use more steel and feel more solid |
| Design | Plain verticals are quickest; patterns, CNC panels or glass infill take longer |
| Fixing | Top-of-slab, side-of-slab or into a parapet all need different brackets and work |
| Finish | Mirror polish vs satin on SS; paint vs powder coat on MS |
| Access | High floors without a service lift, or no balcony access for welding, add time |
So, MS or SS: a quick way to decide
- Choose SS304 if you want the railing to look the same in five years with no painting, especially on an open, rain-facing balcony.
- Choose MS if you want colour, a heavy or ornamental design, a long terrace or boundary run, or a match with an existing MS gate and grills, and you are fine repainting now and then.
- Choose SS with glass if you want an open view; our glass balcony railing guide covers glass types and fixings.

FabWise quotes railings after a ₹99 site visit, and that fee is adjusted against your bill if you go ahead; you then get a written, all-inclusive quote for the agreed railing.
Common questions
Which is better for a balcony, MS or SS railing?
For an open balcony in Gurugram or Noida, an SS304 stainless steel railing is usually better because it does not rust and needs no repainting. MS is better when you want a painted colour, an ornamental or heavy design, or a long terrace run, and you accept repainting every few years. Both are safe if the height, gaps and anchoring are right.
Does a stainless steel railing ever rust?
SS304 resists rust in normal city air, though dust and pollution can leave surface marks that wipe off. Lower grades such as SS202 are more prone to brown staining and small rust spots outdoors. If a stainless railing rusts within a year, the grade or the fixings are usually the cause, so ask for SS304 in writing.
How often does an MS railing need painting?
It depends on the coating and exposure. A properly primed and painted MS railing on a covered balcony can go several years between coats; one facing rain and sun will need touch-ups sooner. Powder coating generally lasts longer than brushed enamel. Repaint at the first chip, before rust spreads under the paint.
Can I change my balcony railing in a society flat?
Often yes, but check first. Many RWAs and maintenance agencies want the outside of the building to look uniform, so they may ask you to match the original design or add glass behind the existing railing. Check with your RWA or society and the building's terms before work starts.
SS railing ka kaam kitne din mein hota hai?
It depends on the length, the design and whether glass is involved. After the site visit you get a written quote within about 2 hours, and fabrication starts once the 50% advance is paid. We confirm the timeline for your railing in that quote rather than guessing it before we have measured.
What height should a balcony railing be?
A common guide is around 1 metre (about 3.5 ft) or more from the finished floor, with higher railings on upper floors. Keep vertical gaps under about 4 inches so a child cannot slip through, and avoid low horizontal bars that can be climbed. Matching or exceeding your building's original railing height is a sensible minimum.
