MS Gate Rust Protection: Primer, Paint, Powder Coat or Galvanising?
A mild steel gate rusts from the places nobody paints. Which coating system to ask for, how each one holds up through a Delhi NCR monsoon, and how to stop rust on a gate you already have.

The best rust protection for an MS gate is a complete coating system, not a single coat of paint: the steel cleaned back to bare metal, a zinc-rich or red oxide primer on every face, then either two coats of PU or enamel paint or a factory powder coat. For the longest life, the steel is hot-dip galvanised first and then painted or powder coated. Whatever the system, most gates in Gurugram and Noida start rusting at the same few spots: the bottom rail, the welds, the hinges and the inside of hollow pipes.
This guide goes through each option, what it costs you in upkeep, and how to rescue a gate that has already started to rust. For gate styles, sizes and sliding vs swing, see our main gate design guide.
Why does mild steel rust so quickly in Delhi NCR?
Mild steel is mostly iron, and iron turns to rust whenever water and oxygen reach it. Delhi NCR gives it plenty of chances: a humid monsoon, heavy dew in winter, dust that holds moisture against the metal, and pollution that makes that moisture slightly acidic. A gate also takes knocks from cars, bikes and delivery trolleys, and every chip in the paint is an opening.
Rust doesn't stay where it starts. It creeps under the surrounding paint, lifts it into blisters and flakes, and eats the steel from inside the coating. That is why a gate can look fine from the street and still have a bottom rail you can push a screwdriver through.
Where does a gate start rusting first?
| Spot | Why it rusts | What prevents it |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom rail and frame | Sits in splashback and monsoon puddles; dust packs against it | Keep a gap above the floor; slope the drive away; extra coat on the bottom |
| Weld joints | Weld heat burns off primer; spatter and slag left on the joint | Grind and clean welds, then prime them separately |
| Inside hollow pipes | Water gets in through open ends and can't get out | Seal pipe ends; drill small drain holes at the lowest point |
| Hinges and pins | Moving metal wears the coating off | Grease points; replace worn pins before they score the sleeve |
| Under hinge and lock plates | Plates fitted over unpainted steel trap water | Paint behind plates before fixing |
| Sliding gate track and wheels | Track holds water and grit | Keep the channel clear; coat the track |
If you already see brown streaks on the wall or pillar below a gate or grill, that is rust being washed out of the steel; see rust stains on the wall. Cracks around a joint that bleed rust need attention sooner; see welding joint cracked.
Which coating system should you ask for?
Primer: the layer that does the real work
A primer bonds to the steel and protects it; the top coat mostly protects the primer and gives the colour. Red oxide primer is the traditional, economical choice. Zinc-rich or zinc phosphate primers add zinc, which protects steel even where the paint gets scratched, and are generally preferred for gates and outdoor railings. Epoxy primers are tougher still and are common on industrial work.
Top coat: enamel, PU or powder coat
- Synthetic enamel paint: the usual brush or spray finish. Economical and easy to touch up, but it chalks and fades in strong sun and needs repainting more often.
- PU (polyurethane) paint: a harder, glossier, more UV-resistant finish. Costs more than enamel and holds colour longer.
- [Powder coating](/glossary/powder-coating): a dry powder sprayed on and baked in an oven to form a thick, even skin. Very durable and smooth, but the gate has to be made in sections that fit the oven, and site welding afterwards damages the coat.
Hot-dip galvanising: the long-life option
Hot-dip galvanising means dipping the finished steel parts into molten zinc, which coats every surface inside and out, including the inside of pipes. Galvanised steel resists rust for many years even before paint. It is usually followed by a suitable primer and paint or powder coat for colour. It adds cost and time, and fabrication has to be planned around it, but for coastal sites, very wet locations or a gate you never want to repaint, it is the strongest option.
| System | Durability | Upkeep | Touch-up on site | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red oxide + enamel | Fair | Repaint every few years | Easy | Tight budgets, sheltered gates |
| Zinc primer + PU paint | Good | Less frequent repainting | Easy | Most house gates and grills |
| Powder coat on prepared steel | Very good | Wash; repair chips promptly | Possible but shows | Gates made in sections, modern finishes |
| Hot-dip galvanised + paint or powder coat | Best | Low | Easy on the paint layer | Exposed, wet or long-life work |
How is an MS gate prepared before coating?
- Cut and weld the gate, then grind the welds smooth and remove spatter.
- Remove mill scale, rust and oil: wire brushing or grinding on site, or shot or sand blasting in a workshop for the best key.
- Degrease, then prime as soon as possible, before fresh steel starts to flash-rust in humid air.
- Prime every face, including the inside of corners, behind plates and the underside of the bottom rail.
- Apply the top coats, letting each one dry properly between coats.
- Fit hinges, locks and wheels, then touch up any marks made during installation.
How do you fix a gate that's already rusting?
Surface rust on a sound gate can usually be treated: scrape and wire-brush back to bright steel, treat with a rust converter if needed, prime, and repaint. If the bottom rail has holes, or a hollow section is rusting from the inside out, that part should be cut out and replaced with new steel before painting. Painting over flaking rust only hides it for a season.
Our page on a metal gate or grill rusting explains when a repaint is enough and when a section needs replacing. A gate that has started to drop as well as rust usually has a hinge or pillar problem too; see gate sagging and dragging.
What upkeep keeps rust away?
- Wash the gate with water a few times a year, especially after the dusty months, and dry the bottom rail.
- Inspect after every monsoon for chips, blisters and rust bleeding at welds.
- Touch up chips within weeks: lightly sand, prime, then top coat.
- Grease hinges and sliding gate wheels; clear the track of soil and leaves.
- Keep flower pots, wet mats and car-wash water off the gate's base.
The same coating rules apply to MS window grills, MS balcony railings and MS sliding gates, so it makes sense to specify one system for all the steel on a house. If you are deciding between metals, our MS vs SS railing guide compares upkeep honestly.
How does pricing work for a properly protected gate?
A better coating system adds to the gate price, mainly through preparation time, primer type, coats and, for galvanising or powder coating, outside processing. We don't publish rates for metal work; the MS gate price guide explains what moves the figure. Every gate is quoted after a ₹99 site visit in Gurugram, Noida and the rest of Delhi NCR (adjusted against your bill if you go ahead), and the written quote lists the primer and finish you are paying for.

Common questions
What is the best paint for an MS gate?
A zinc-rich or zinc phosphate primer followed by two coats of PU paint is a durable choice for most house gates. Enamel over red oxide is cheaper but fades and needs repainting sooner. Powder coating is tougher still if the gate can be coated in sections before installation.
Is powder coating better than paint for a gate?
Usually, yes. Powder coating forms a thicker, harder and more even layer than brushed paint and holds colour longer. The trade-offs are that the gate has to be made in sections that fit the oven, and chips are harder to touch up invisibly on site.
Gate mein jung lag gaya hai, kya repaint se theek ho jayega?
If the rust is only on the surface and the steel is still solid, yes: scrape it back to bright metal, prime and repaint. If the bottom rail has holes or a pipe is rusting from inside, that section should be cut out and replaced first. Send a photo on WhatsApp to check.
How often should an MS gate be repainted?
It depends on the coating system and exposure. Enamel over red oxide on a gate that faces sun and rain may need repainting every few years; zinc primer with PU paint or a powder coat lasts longer. Touch up chips as they appear and the full repaint can wait.
Is galvanised steel worth it for a main gate?
It is worth it when the gate is very exposed, stands in water during the monsoon, or you want minimal upkeep for many years. Hot-dip galvanising coats the inside of pipes as well as the outside. It adds cost and time, so for a sheltered gate a good zinc primer and PU paint is often enough.
Why does my gate rust from the bottom first?
The bottom rail sits closest to puddles, splashback and dust, and water collects inside hollow sections that have no drain holes. Weld joints near the bottom are often the least well coated. Keeping a gap above the floor and draining hollow pipes makes the biggest difference.
