Safety grill doors for flats and builder floors

A steel grill door hung in its own frame in front of the main wooden door, so the main door can stand open for air while the entrance stays locked. The frame is MS angle or box section anchored to the door jamb or the wall; the shutter carries bars, a laser-cut jaali or a mesh-backed pattern, and closes on a multi-point or mortise lock. Mosquito mesh can be fitted behind the grill. Built in mild steel with primer and enamel or powder coat, or in stainless steel where rust is a concern. Each door is made to the measured opening and the swing allowed by the corridor.

A safety door sits in front of the main door and does a simple job well: it lets air and light into the flat while the entrance stays locked. FabWise measures the door opening and the space outside it, agrees the design and the lock with you, and fabricates and fits the door in one job. Visits across Gurugram and Noida cost ₹99.

What a safety door is, and why flats in Gurugram want one

In most Gurugram and Noida flats, the main door opens straight onto a lift lobby or a shared corridor. In summer, families want that door open for cross-ventilation; in the evening they want to see who has rung the bell before opening anything. A safety door does both. It is a steel grill door hung in its own frame just outside or just inside the main door, with a lock of its own.

It also suits builder floors, where the staircase is shared between four families, and independent houses where the main door faces a verandah. On the ground floor it is often the first real barrier against an intruder, since a wooden door alone can be forced.

In high-rise societies the safety door usually opens into the corridor, and the corridor belongs to everyone. Many RWAs ask that the door does not block the fire escape route, that it opens flat against the wall, and that it matches a society colour. Check your society's rule before the visit.

Designs, locks and mesh options

The look is set by the infill. Vertical bars are the simplest and give the clearest view through. Laser-cut MS sheet in a jaali or geometric pattern gives more privacy and is the most popular choice on new flats, because it looks finished rather than industrial. Decorative flat-bar designs sit between the two. Many safety doors use a solid sheet lower panel so pets and children cannot reach through near the floor.

The lock matters as much as the steel. A mortise lock with a handle on both sides is the usual choice; a multi-point lock that bolts into the frame at top, middle and bottom resists forcing far better. A small peep window or a hinged letter flap can be added.

A mosquito mesh fitted behind the grill is worth asking for if the door will stand open in the evenings. It can be a fixed stainless or fibreglass mesh, or a pleated mesh that folds away; see our mosquito mesh service.

For a matching look, the same pattern can be used on window grills.

MS or stainless steel for a safety door?

Mild steel is the usual material. It is strong, easy to fabricate into any pattern, and takes paint or powder coat in any colour, so the door can match the main door or the wall. Its weakness is rust, especially at the bottom rail of a door that faces an open verandah or gets mopped every day.

Stainless steel does not need painting and will not rust in a covered corridor. SS304 is the grade to ask for; SS202 is cheaper but can stain and spot over time, particularly where rain reaches it or harsh floor cleaners are used. A stainless door has a brushed or mirror finish rather than a colour.

For a door inside a covered lift lobby, a well-finished MS door is perfectly durable. For a door that faces rain, stainless or a powder-coated MS door is the safer choice. The MS vs SS guide explains the trade-off in more detail; it is written about railings, but the steel behaves the same way on a door.

What decides the cost, and how the job runs

A safety door is quoted per job after the visit. The cost depends on the door size, the material (MS or stainless), the design (plain bars use less work than a laser-cut panel), the lock (a multi-point lock costs more than a mortise lock), whether a mesh is added, and the finish. A door that needs its own frame built into a rough opening costs more than one hung on an existing jamb.

The visit costs ₹99 and is adjusted against the final bill. The team measures the opening at several points (door openings are often out of square), checks the swing space in the corridor, and looks at the jamb or wall the frame will anchor to. You get a written, all-inclusive quote, usually within about two hours, valid for three days.

Fabrication starts on a 50% advance. The door is made and finished in the workshop, then fitted on site, usually in a few hours, with the lock set and the swing adjusted. The balance is paid on completion. Other jobs in this family are on the metal fabrication catalogue.

Caring for a steel safety door

A safety door is opened and closed many times a day, so the hinges and the lock wear before the steel does. A drop of oil on the hinges every couple of months keeps the door from sagging and scraping the floor; graphite powder or a dry lock lubricant keeps the lock turning smoothly. Avoid heavy grease in the keyway, which collects dust.

On an MS door, the bottom rail and the lower corners are where rust starts, because they catch water when the floor is mopped. Wipe them dry and touch up any chips straight away. Enamel paint usually needs a fresh coat every few years; powder coat lasts longer between attentions. If rust has already got a hold, read about metal rusting and what to do.

A stainless door only needs a wipe with mild soap and water, and a stainless cleaner now and then to keep the finish even.

Common questions

Does a safety door need RWA permission in a Gurgaon society?

In many Gurgaon and Noida high-rise societies, yes. Because the door usually opens into a shared corridor, RWAs often set rules on how it swings, how far it projects and what colour it is, so it does not block the fire escape route. Ask your RWA office before the visit and the team will design to that rule.

Which lock is best on a steel safety door?

A multi-point lock, which bolts into the frame at several points, resists forcing best. A good mortise lock with handles on both sides is the common, simpler choice. The team shows you options at the visit and includes the chosen lock in the written quote, so you know exactly what is being fitted.

Can mosquito mesh be added to a safety door?

Yes. A fixed mesh can be fitted behind the grill, or a pleated mesh that folds away to the side. It is worth adding if the main door will stand open in the evenings. Mention it at the visit so the frame is built to take it.

Safety door MS mein banwayein ya SS mein?

MS is cheaper, can be painted or powder coated in any colour, and is durable inside a covered lobby. Stainless steel, ideally SS304, needs no paint and will not rust, so it suits a door facing rain or a verandah. The team will suggest one after seeing where the door goes.

How long does a safety door take to install?

Fabrication starts after the 50% advance and the timeline is given with the quote. Fitting on site is usually done in a few hours, including setting the frame, hanging the door, fixing the lock and adjusting the swing. A door needing a new frame in a rough opening can take longer.
