Gate lock not working in Gurgaon: latch, bolt and cylinder problems fixed
A gate lock that won't work is usually not a broken lock: the gate leaf has dropped so the bolt misses its keeper, or rust and dust have seized the bolt or cylinder. Re-aligning the gate or keeper fixes most; a rusted-through lock box or a seized cylinder needs replacing.

When one of those stops engaging, the gate can't be secured at night. Before buying a new lock, find out whether the lock or the gate is the problem.
The short answer
Swing the gate slowly closed and watch the bolt meet its keeper. If the bolt hits the edge of the keeper, rubs, or sits above or below it, the gate has moved and it's an alignment job. If the bolt lines up perfectly but won't throw, or the key won't turn, the lock itself is seized or broken.
Causes, most likely first
1. The gate leaf has dropped
Heavy MS gates sag on their hinges or pillar over time. A drop of a few millimetres at the lock end is enough for the bolt to miss the keeper hole. If the gate also scrapes the ground, read gate sagging and dragging too.
2. Rust in the bolt or lock box
Rain runs down the gate and into the lock box. On unpainted inner faces, rust builds up and the bolt jams. Gates near garden sprinklers or washing areas suffer most.
3. Dust-seized cylinder
Pin cylinders collect fine dust in the dry months, and the key stops turning fully. People then force it with oil, which turns dust into sludge.
4. Keeper or strike plate moved
A keeper welded or screwed to the pillar or the second leaf can crack its weld or loosen, so it drifts out of line.
5. Second leaf not held still
On a double gate, the fixed leaf is held by a drop bolt into the ground. If that ground socket has filled with mud, the fixed leaf floats and the lock can't line up with it.
Safe checks
- Close the gate slowly and look at the bolt against its keeper from both sides. Mark where it touches with chalk.
- Lift the lock end of the gate slightly with a helper and try the bolt. If it throws, the gate has dropped.
- Clean the drop-bolt socket in the ground with a stick; mud and gravel there are a common cause.
- Puff graphite powder or a dry lubricant into the cylinder. Avoid heavy oil.

Repair or replace?
Lock boxes, cylinders, bolts and keepers can all be replaced on an existing gate, and hinges can be rebuilt. Can I put oil in my gate lock?
Avoid heavy oil in the key cylinder because it holds dust and turns into sludge. Use graphite powder or a dry PTFE spray in the cylinder. A little grease on the sliding bolt itself is fine before the monsoon, wiped clean of excess.
