Mosquito Mesh Types Compared: Pleated, Sliding, Fixed or Roller? by FabWise in Gurugram & Noida

For most homes the best mosquito mesh is a sliding mesh shutter on sliding windows, a hinged or fixed mesh on casement windows, and a pleated mesh on balcony and French doors, where you need a wide opening that folds out of the way. Use stainless steel mesh where pets, children or kitchen heat would wear out fibreglass, and fibreglass everywhere else. The mesh fabric matters less than the fit: a mesh with a gap at the edge is no mesh at all.

In Gurugram, Noida and Delhi, the mosquito season runs hardest after the monsoon, which is also when dengue cases rise, so most enquiries come in August and September. Here is how the main types compare.

What are the main mosquito mesh types?

Which mesh suits which opening?

Sliding windows

A sliding mesh shutter is the neatest answer: the window system has a third track, and the mesh slides across whichever glass panel is open. If you're replacing windows anyway, ask for a three-track aluminium sliding window or a uPVC slider with a mesh track built in. On existing two-track windows, a fixed or roller mesh on the outside is usually the fallback.

Casement windows

Casement windows open outwards, so the mesh goes on the inside. A hinged mesh frame that opens into the room, or a roller mesh in a slim cassette, both work. A uPVC window in a casement style can be ordered with a matching mesh frame from the start, which is the cleanest finish.

Balcony and French doors

A wide door needs a mesh that doesn't take up space when it's open. That's what the pleated mosquito mesh is for: it folds into a narrow stack at the side and pulls across on a low-profile bottom track. On an aluminium sliding door, a sliding mesh panel in its own track is the sturdier alternative.

Kitchen and utility

Kitchens are hard on mesh: heat, oil and steam clog fibreglass and make it brittle. A stainless steel mesh in a hinged frame, which you can open to clean, holds up much better.

Fibreglass, stainless steel, aluminium or polyester mesh?

Mosquito mesh fabrics compared
Mesh fabricStrengthVisibilityBest for
Fibreglass (PVC-coated)Moderate; tears if pushed hardGood; dark grey is least visibleMost windows
Stainless steelHigh; resists pets and childrenGood; slightly more visibleKitchens, pet homes, ground floors
AluminiumModerate; dents and creasesGoodOlder systems, rarely chosen now
Polyester (pleated)Moderate; made to foldVery goodPleated mesh doors

A dark charcoal mesh is easier to see through than a light grey one, because it reflects less light back at you. On a window with a view, that small choice changes how the room feels every day. Mesh rated for very small insects is finer and blocks a little more airflow, so on a stuffy room you may prefer a standard grade.

Why do mosquitoes still get in after fitting a mesh?

  • Gaps at the corners or the bottom track, where the mesh frame doesn't sit flush on an uneven sill.
  • A worn brush seal on a sliding mesh shutter.
  • A magnet that no longer holds a hinged mesh shut; see mesh door not closing.
  • A small tear from a pet's claw or a curtain rod; see mosquito mesh torn.
  • The other openings: the exhaust fan, the gap under the main door, AC pipes through the wall.

What works with children and pets at home?

Cats climb fibreglass mesh and dogs push through it at the bottom, so homes with pets usually need stainless steel mesh, at least on the lower half of doors. Children lean on mesh frames and pull pleated meshes across hard, so a sturdier frame with a proper handle is worth paying for on the doors they use. On windows a child can reach, remember that a mesh is not a safety barrier: it keeps insects out, not people in. Where that matters, a grill or a window restrictor does the safety job and the mesh does its own.

What should you check before the fitter leaves?

  1. Slide, swing or pull every mesh across its full travel. It should move smoothly without catching.
  2. Look along each edge in daylight. You shouldn't see a line of light between the mesh frame and the window frame.
  3. Check the corners and the bottom track on pleated meshes, where uneven sills leave the biggest gaps.
  4. Close hinged meshes and make sure the magnet or latch holds them shut without a push.
  5. Ask how to remove a fixed or hinged frame for cleaning, and try it once while the team is still there.

In housing societies, many owners book mesh for the whole flat at once before the monsoon; if your RWA is organising work across a tower, see glass and metal work for housing societies.

How do you clean and care for a mosquito mesh?

Dust is the enemy in NCR. A mesh clogged with fine dust lets less air through and looks grey from inside. Vacuum it with a soft brush every couple of weeks in dusty months, and wash removable frames with water and mild soap twice a year. Don't use a pressure washer on fibreglass. On pleated meshes, keep the bottom track clear of sand and hair, and on roller meshes, never let the mesh snap back up on its own; guide it, or the spring wears out quickly.

Can mesh go on any window, including old ones?

Almost always, yes. Old aluminium windows can take a fixed or roller mesh fitted outside or inside the frame. Windows behind an MS window grill can have a mesh fixed to the grill itself, which is a common approach on ground floors; our window grill designs guide covers how grills and mesh work together. In a society, mesh fitted inside the window doesn't change the building's look, so RWA approval is rarely an issue.

How is mosquito mesh priced?

Mesh is quoted after a site visit, because the type, the opening size and the frame you're fitting to all change the work. The quote is worked out per opening or by area; you can add up your window and door sizes with the area calculator before the visit. What moves the price: mesh type (pleated and roller cost more than fixed), the mesh fabric, the frame finish, and how many openings are done together.

We fit mosquito mesh across Delhi NCR, from flats in Gurgaon and Noida to houses in Faridabad and Ghaziabad. Book a site visit before the monsoon; the team will measure every opening and suggest the mesh that fits each one.

Common questions

Which mosquito mesh is best for a balcony door?

A pleated mosquito mesh is usually best for a balcony or French door, because it folds into a narrow stack at the side and leaves the whole opening clear when not in use. On a sliding balcony door, a sliding mesh panel in its own track is sturdier. Both need a flat sill to seal at the bottom.

Is stainless steel mosquito mesh better than fibreglass?

Stainless steel mesh is stronger and resists pets, children and kitchen heat far better, so it lasts longer in tough spots. Fibreglass is softer, cheaper and slightly easier to see through, and it's fine for most bedroom and living room windows. Many homes use steel in the kitchen and fibreglass elsewhere.

Pleated mesh kitne saal chalta hai?

With reasonable care a good pleated mesh lasts several years. What shortens its life is a bottom track full of dust, a pleat that gets snagged, and pulling it across too hard. Vacuum the pleats and track regularly and open and close it gently by the handle.

Can I fit a mosquito mesh on a casement window that opens outwards?

Yes. Because the window opens out, the mesh goes on the inside: either a hinged mesh frame that swings into the room or a roller mesh in a slim cassette. A new uPVC or aluminium casement can be ordered with a matching mesh frame from the start.

Why do mosquitoes come in even with a mesh?

Usually through a gap, not the mesh itself: an uneven sill under the frame, a worn brush seal, a magnet that no longer holds, or a small tear. Exhaust fans, gaps under doors and AC pipe holes are other common routes. A proper fit with sealed edges matters more than the mesh fabric.
