Replacing Gates, Grills and Safety Doors on Older Alpha and Beta Houses

Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Beta 1 and Beta 2 were among the first sectors the Greater Noida authority developed, and many of the houses on their wide, tree-lined roads still carry their original steel: a gate welded up when the boundary wall was built, grills fitted with the windows, perhaps a sliding gate added later when the family bought a second car. Twenty-odd monsoons on, that steel is failing in the same places on house after house, and metal fabrication in Alpha and Beta is mostly about deciding what can be saved and replacing the rest in one go.

Saving it or replacing it: how to tell

Rust that sits on the surface can be ground back, primed and repainted. Rust that has eaten through the hollow bottom rail of a gate, where rainwater collects inside the section, cannot; patch welds on thin, pitted steel rarely survive the next monsoon. Why the gate drags: look at the ground, not just the gate

Many frontages here have been re-paved since the house was built, often raising the ground level by an inch or two. A swing gate that once cleared the drive now scrapes; a sliding gate's track has disappeared under new tiles. That is the gate sagging and dragging problem, and replacing the gate without fixing the levels just repeats it. Grills and the brown streaks on the wall

Those vertical brown streaks under older windows are rust washing down from the grill fixings, covered on rust stains on the wall. New grills are fixed with sealed anchors, and the steel is protected properly. Before the visit

• Decide whether gate, grills and safety doors should share one design and one colour; doing them together means they age together.
• On a builder floor, agree with the other owners who pays for the shared gate.
• Note any automation plans, since a motor-ready sliding gate needs a level track and rack mounting.
• Clear parking at the frontage on fitting day; gate leaves arrive by vehicle.
