Car Parking Shed Options: Layouts, Roofs and What to Check by FabWise in Gurugram & Noida

The best car parking shed for most homes in Delhi NCR is a wall-mounted or cantilever MS frame with a polycarbonate or metal sheet roof, because it keeps posts out of the way of car doors and the gate. Where there is no strong wall, a four-post freestanding shed is the sturdy default. For offices, schools and housing societies, a row of cantilever bays works best. The right choice comes down to three things: the space you have, the cars you park, and what your RWA or authority allows.

In Gurugram and Noida, the main reason people build one is the summer sun, which bakes a car's dashboard and fades its paint, followed by bird droppings, falling leaves and dust from construction nearby. Here's how to choose.

Which layout fits your parking space?

When to choose a wall-mounted shed

Most builder-floor and independent-house driveways in DLF Phases, Sushant Lok and Palam Vihar are narrow strips between the gate and the house. Fixing the roof to the house wall saves a pair of posts, which in a tight driveway can be the difference between opening the driver's door fully or squeezing out. The wall has to be checked: a brick or RCC wall usually holds; a thin boundary wall or a cladding finish may not.

When a cantilever makes sense

Cantilever sheds put all the posts on one side, so you drive in and open both doors without hitting a post. That makes them the usual answer for office parking, school drop-off areas and society visitor bays. The trade-off is that a cantilever needs heavier posts and a bigger foundation, because the whole roof hangs off one line of supports and wind lifts on it. If you manage a commercial site, see our pages for warehouses and factories and schools and coaching centres.

How tall and wide should a car shed be?

Plan for the biggest car you're likely to own, not the one you have today. An SUV with a roof carrier or a roof box needs more height than a hatchback. A common approach is to keep the lowest beam comfortably above the tallest roof plus a margin for a roof rack and for the slope, so the car never touches the gutter end. Width needs to leave room to open doors fully on both sides, plus space to walk past.

  • Measure the driveway twice: width at the gate, width at the house, and the clear height to any balcony, AC unit or projection above.
  • Check the gate swing: a swing gate that opens inwards must clear the shed posts. Many owners move to a sliding gate for exactly this reason.
  • Think about the slope of the driveway: a shed on a ramp needs posts of different heights to keep the roof level.
  • Mark where rainwater will go: towards a drain, never onto the neighbour's side or the gate.

Get the covered area in square feet from your measurements with our area calculator; that's the number a shed quote is usually built on.

Polycarbonate or metal sheet for a car shed?

Both are common. Polycarbonate keeps the porch bright, looks lighter from the road and works well where the shed is in front of a window. Opal or tinted sheet hides dirt better than clear. Metal sheet blocks all sun, hides bird droppings and leaves from below, and shrugs off a branch falling on it. It's noisier in heavy rain. For a full side-by-side, read polycarbonate vs metal sheet roof.

Can you add lights, a fan or an EV charger under it?

Yes, and it's easier to plan before fabrication than after. A conduit can run inside a hollow post to a light fitting on the beam, so no wire hangs loose. If you have, or plan to buy, an electric car, mark where the charger will sit on the wall and keep that side of the shed free of posts and dry from the gutter. A small slope away from the charger and the main switchboard is worth asking for at the visit.

What frame and finish should a car parking shed have?

A car shed is almost always built in mild steel: square or rectangular hollow sections for posts and beams, with lighter purlins under the roof. The posts sit on base plates bolted to a concrete footing or an existing floor. Because the shed is outside and the bottom of each post sees water from car washing and the monsoon, the finish matters: primer and enamel at the least, powder coating or hot-dip galvanising where you want it to last. A post that rusts at floor level is the shed's weakest point.

Do you need RWA or authority permission for a car shed?

It depends on where you live:

  • Group housing societies: parking areas are common property. A shed over your allotted slot almost always needs written RWA approval, and many societies only allow a uniform design. See glass and metal work for housing societies.
  • Builder floors: the driveway is often shared between floors, so agree with the other owners first.
  • Independent houses: check your local building rules and keep the shed within your plot line; a shed over the road or footpath invites trouble.

What goes wrong with car sheds, and how to avoid it?

  • Sagging in the middle: purlins spaced too far apart, or a sheet too thin for the span. See shed roof sagging.
  • Leaks where it meets the wall: a missing or poorly sealed flashing strip along the wall.
  • Water dumping on the car door: no gutter at the low end, or a gutter too small; see shed gutter overflowing.
  • Rusty posts: water pooling at the base plate. Raise the plate slightly and seal the joint.
  • Welds cracking: a frame that flexes in the wind; see welding joint cracked.

How is a car parking shed priced?

Car sheds are quoted after a site visit, because the layout, span, height, foundation and finish all move the price. A cantilever over three cars costs more per square foot than a four-post shed over one, because the posts and footings do more work. The terrace shed cost guide explains what drives shed prices, and the same logic applies to parking. If you also need a gate, the MS gate price guide is worth a read, since doing both in one job saves a second visit.

Common questions

Which is the best car parking shed for a house in Gurgaon?

For most Gurgaon houses and builder floors, a wall-mounted MS shed with a polycarbonate or metal sheet roof works best, because it needs fewer posts in a narrow driveway. If the wall can't take the load, a four-post freestanding shed is the sturdy option. The right height and post positions depend on your car, gate and driveway.

Can a car shed be built without posts in the middle?

Yes. A cantilever shed has posts on one side only and the roof hangs over the car, so nothing blocks the doors. It needs heavier posts and a stronger foundation than a four-post shed. A wall-mounted shed with brackets can also avoid front posts over a short span.

Society mein car parking shed lagane ke liye permission chahiye?

In most group housing societies, yes. Parking is common property, so the RWA usually has to approve any shed in writing, and many only allow one standard design so the parking looks uniform. Ask the maintenance office for their rules and drawings before booking any work.

How high should a car parking shed be for an SUV?

High enough that the lowest point of the roof, including the gutter end, clears the SUV's roof with a roof rack or box and a safety margin. Measure your tallest vehicle and any projections above the driveway, such as balconies or AC units. The site visit takes these measurements and sets the height to suit.

Will a polycarbonate car shed protect my car from the sun?

It will cut most of the direct heat and UV, especially with an opal or tinted sheet, but some light still comes through. A metal sheet roof blocks the sun completely and hides dirt better. If keeping the car cool is the priority, metal sheet usually does the better job; polycarbonate keeps the porch brighter.
