Shed gutter overflowing in Gurgaon: why rain spills over and how to fix it
A shed gutter overflows because it's blocked with dust and leaves, too small for the roof area in a monsoon cloudburst, laid without fall to its outlet, or the downpipe is too narrow or blocked. Clearing it helps; a gutter that's undersized or flat needs replacing or re-laying with proper fall.

When an NCR monsoon storm hits, a terrace or car parking shed collects a lot of water fast. If the gutter can't carry it away, water pours over the edge onto the terrace, down the neighbour's wall, onto your parked car or straight onto the people waiting at the gate. In Gurugram and Noida societies, that can quickly become an RWA complaint.
The short answer
Watch the gutter in rain. Overflow along the whole length means it's blocked, too small or laid flat. Overflow at one point means a dip, a joint or a blockage just there. Water backing up at the outlet means the downpipe is blocked or too narrow.
Why shed gutters overflow
Dust, leaves and pigeon debris
NCR dust storms leave a fine silt in gutters, and the first rain turns it into mud. Add leaves from nearby trees and pigeon nesting material, and the outlet chokes.
Gutter too small for the roof
A large shed sheds a lot of water in a cloudburst. A narrow gutter sized for a small canopy simply can't carry it, even when clean.
No fall toward the outlet
A gutter needs a slight slope to its outlet. Laid level, or sagging between brackets, it holds water and overflows at the low point.
Downpipe too narrow or blocked
A single small outlet for a long gutter, or a pipe with a sharp bend that catches debris, backs water up.
Sheet doesn't reach the gutter
If roof sheets stop short of the gutter, or overshoot it, water misses the gutter in heavy rain and runs down the fascia.
Checks you can do
- From a ladder at the edge, scoop out silt and leaves and check the outlet is clear.
- Pour a bucket of water at the far end and watch it flow. Standing water shows dips or no fall.
- Run water down the downpipe from the top. Slow drainage means a blockage.
- In rain, check whether water is landing in the gutter or overshooting it.
| What happens | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Overflows everywhere in heavy rain | Gutter too small | Larger gutter, extra outlets |
| Overflows at one low point | Sagging bracket, no fall | Re-set brackets with fall |
| Water backs up at the outlet | Blocked or narrow downpipe | Clear pipe, larger outlet |
| Water overshoots the gutter | Sheet too long or gutter too low | Adjust gutter position |
| Drips through gutter joints | Failed joint sealant | Re-seal joints |
Repair or replace the gutter?
Cleaning, re-setting brackets and re-sealing joints are simple. If the gutter is undersized or rusted, replacing it with a larger section and more outlets is the answer, sometimes along with adjusting the roof edge. On a new polycarbonate terrace shed or car parking shed, gutter size and fall should be specified for the roof area, not as an afterthought. Our terrace shed guide for Gurgaon covers drainage and RWA rules, and the terrace shed cost guide explains pricing. If rain water is getting through the roof itself rather than over its edge, see terrace shed leaking.
How FabWise helps
Send a video of the gutter in rain, or while you pour water into it, plus photos of the outlet and roof edge, on WhatsApp. We'll tell you whether it's a clean, a re-lay or a new gutter. If a visit is needed in our Delhi NCR cities, it's ₹99, adjusted against the bill, and the work is quoted after the visit.
Prevention before every monsoon
Clean the gutters in late May, after the dust storms, and again mid-monsoon. Fit leaf guards on outlets near trees. Make sure downpipes discharge to a drain, not onto a neighbour's wall or a walkway. Check bracket spacing so the gutter can't sag between them.

Common questions
Why does my shed gutter overflow in heavy rain?
Usually it's blocked with silt and leaves, too small for the roof area, laid without fall to its outlet, or the downpipe is too narrow. Clean it first and test with a bucket of water. If it still overflows when clean, it needs resizing or re-laying.
How often should I clean the shed gutter?
In Delhi NCR, clean it before the monsoon after the dust-storm season, and again mid-monsoon. If trees overhang the shed, check monthly through the rains. Always clean from a stable ladder at the edge, never by standing on the roof sheets.
Can a bigger gutter be fitted to an existing shed?
Usually yes. The roof edge and bracket positions may need adjusting so the sheet discharges into the new gutter, and extra outlets or downpipes may be added. Send photos of the roof edge and outlet and we'll tell you what's possible.
Shed ka paani nali se bahar gir raha hai, kya karein?
First clean the gutter and the downpipe and check water runs to the outlet. If it still spills over in heavy rain, the gutter is too small or has no slope. Send a video on WhatsApp and we'll suggest the fix.
