Shed noisy in rain in Gurgaon: quieting a drumming or rattling roof

A shed roof is noisy because thin sheets act like a drum when rain hits them, and loose sheets or fixings add rattle in the wind. Tightening fixings and adding damping tape stops the rattle; for drumming, a thicker multiwall polycarbonate or an insulated sandwich sheet is the real cure.

Polycarbonate terrace shed roof on an MS frame over a rooftop sitting area

The first July cloudburst over a new terrace shed in Gurugram often brings a surprise: the sound. Under a thin metal or single-layer sheet, heavy rain becomes a roar loud enough to drown out conversation, and on a top-floor flat it carries into the bedrooms below. Wind adds a second noise: sheets lifting and slapping against the frame. The two have different causes and different fixes.

The short answer

Drumming in rain comes from the sheet itself: thin, stiff sheets with nothing behind them amplify each drop. Rattling and clapping in wind comes from movement: loose screws, missing washers or sheets not fixed at every purlin. Fix the movement first, then decide whether the sheet is worth changing for the drumming.

Where the noise comes from

Thin metal sheets

Galvalume or colour-coated metal sheets are durable, but on their own they're the loudest roofing there is in rain. They also ping and tick as they heat and cool on a summer afternoon.

Solid or single-wall polycarbonate

Thin solid polycarbonate is quieter than metal but still drums. Multiwall (twin-wall or more) sheets, with air pockets inside, are much quieter, and the air gap also cuts heat. Read more in our polycarbonate sheet glossary entry.

Loose or under-fixed sheets

If sheets are screwed only every other purlin, or screws have loosened as the sheet expanded and shrank, the sheet lifts and slaps down in gusts. That's the clatter you hear in a dust storm.

Missing or perished washers

Each self-drilling screw should have a rubber (EPDM) washer. Without it, the screw rattles in an enlarged hole, and water leaks in too. If you also have drips, read terrace shed leaking.

Frame vibration

A lightweight MS frame with long spans can hum or vibrate in wind, carrying noise through to the building.

What you can check

  • On a windy day, stand under the shed and watch for sheets visibly lifting at the edges.
  • From a safe position, look for screws that sit proud, have no washer, or have a ring of rust around them.
  • Note what the sheet is: metal, solid polycarbonate or multiwall. Check the edge to see if it has internal channels.
  • Listen whether the noise is a steady roar (rain on the sheet) or a clatter (movement).

Repair or re-roof?

Re-fixing, new screws and washers, and damping strips between sheet and purlin are repairs that usually cure the rattle. Drumming needs a change of sheet: multiwall polycarbonate, or a puff-insulated sandwich panel for car sheds and storage. Our polycarbonate vs metal sheet roof guide compares noise, heat and light. A new polycarbonate terrace shed or car parking shed can be specified quieter from the start. The terrace shed cost guide explains how sheet type changes the price.

How FabWise helps

Send a short video of the shed in rain or wind with the sound on, and photos of the fixings and sheet edge, on WhatsApp. If a visit makes sense, it's ₹99 anywhere in our Delhi NCR cities, adjusted against the bill if you go ahead. Shed repairs and re-roofing are quoted after the visit.

Prevention

Before the monsoon, check that every screw is tight and has its washer, and that sheets are fixed at every purlin. Trim trees that drop branches on the roof. If your RWA has noise rules for terraces, a multiwall sheet is the neighbour-friendly choice; our terrace shed guide for Gurgaon covers permissions.

Common questions

How do I reduce rain noise on a metal shed roof?

Thin metal will always drum, but you can reduce it. Make sure sheets are firmly fixed with washered screws so they don't clatter, and add damping strips between sheet and frame. For a big difference, replace it with insulated sandwich panels or multiwall polycarbonate.

Is polycarbonate quieter than a metal sheet in rain?

Yes. Multiwall polycarbonate, with air channels inside, is much quieter than metal sheets and also cuts heat. Thin solid polycarbonate is quieter than metal but still drums. The thicker and more layered the sheet, the quieter it is, which also matters for the flat below a terrace shed.

Why does my shed rattle in strong wind?

Usually the sheets aren't fixed at every purlin, or screws have loosened or lost their washers, so the sheet lifts and slaps down. Re-fixing with correct screws and washers at every purlin usually stops it. A vibrating frame may need bracing.

Baarish mein shed bahut awaaz karta hai, kya karein?

If it's a thin metal sheet, the noise is the sheet itself. Tightening loose screws stops the rattle, but for the rain roar a multiwall polycarbonate or insulated sheet is needed. Send a video with sound on WhatsApp and we'll suggest the right option.
