Cantilever and four-post car parking sheds

A car parking shed is a steel canopy over one or more parked vehicles, built either as a cantilever (posts along one side, the roof projecting over the car) or as a four-post structure. The roof is polycarbonate sheet, profiled metal sheet or a combination, laid to a fall with a gutter. Specified for driveways of independent houses and builder floors, stilt-less plots and open society parking where cars bake in the sun and collect bird droppings and dust. The cantilever leaves the doors and the driveway free of posts; it needs a heavier frame and deeper foundations to carry the overhang. Measured on site and installed by one team.

A car left in the open through a Gurugram summer comes back with a cabin hot enough to burn, paint fading on the bonnet and a film of dust by evening. A car parking shed deals with all three. We build cantilever sheds that keep the driveway clear of posts, and four-post sheds for wider or double bays, in steel with polycarbonate or metal sheet. The shed is measured to your plot, quoted in writing, and fabricated and fitted by our team.

Cantilever or four-post: choosing the shape

Cantilever sheds have posts on one side only, usually along the boundary wall, with the roof reaching out over the car on tapered beams. Nothing stands where the doors open or where you reverse, which is why most homeowners with a tight driveway prefer it. The cost of that convenience is structure: the overhang puts a heavy turning load on the posts, so they need bigger sections and deeper footings.

Four-post sheds stand on a post at each corner. They are simpler, lighter and cheaper for the same area, and they suit a double bay, a farmhouse driveway or an open yard where there is room to walk around the posts.

A wall-mounted lean-to is a third option where a strong wall runs alongside the bay: the roof is carried on brackets from the wall and one or two front posts.

Independent houses in Sushant Lok, Palam Vihar and the DLF phases, and plotted houses across Noida's older sectors, are where these are most often asked for, since cars there usually park in front of the gate.

Roof sheet options for a car shed

Polycarbonate is the most popular roof. Multiwall sheet keeps the area under it noticeably cooler and lets soft light through, so the driveway does not feel dark. Solid sheet is clearer and tougher against hail and falling branches. Either should have a UV-coated top face.

Profiled metal sheet (colour-coated galvalume or galvanised) blocks all the sun and is very durable, but drums loudly in heavy rain and makes the space beneath darker. Some sheds use a puff panel (insulated sandwich sheet) for a quieter, cooler roof.

The frame is usually mild steel: square or rectangular hollow section posts and tapered or straight beams, primed and painted or powder coated. Near trees, plan for leaf litter in the gutter; near the road, plan for dust, which washes off polycarbonate easily but shows on dark metal sheet.

For a terrace version of the same idea, see the polycarbonate terrace shed; for an entrance roof in glass, see the glass entrance canopy.

Permissions, footings and the boundary line

A car shed in front of a house often sits close to, or on, the boundary. In a gated community or an approved plotted colony, the RWA and sometimes the developer have rules about structures in the front setback, maximum height and roof colour, so check before fabrication begins. Sheds that overhang the road or a neighbour's plot invite complaints and should be avoided.

In a society's open parking, a shed over an allotted slot almost always needs written approval from the maintenance office, and some societies install uniform sheds themselves.

Footings matter more than people expect. A cantilever post is effectively a lever, and in a dust storm the roof acts like a sail. Posts are set into concrete footings sized to the overhang, or bolted with base plates onto an existing strong footing. We check the ground at the visit; a paved driveway may need a section cut and re-laid around the post.

The roof is laid to a fall towards a gutter, so water runs to a drain rather than onto the car or the neighbour's wall.

What the price of a car parking shed depends on

Car sheds are quoted after a visit; there is no fixed rate on the site. The terrace shed cost guide explains the method, which is the same.

The cost is driven by:

Number of bays and roof area. One car or two, and how far the roof extends at the front.

Structure type. A cantilever needs heavier posts, deeper beams and larger footings than a four-post shed of the same area.

Roof material. Multiwall polycarbonate, solid polycarbonate, metal sheet and puff panel differ in price and in what they do.

Finish. Painted MS versus powder-coated MS.

Groundwork. Cutting paving, digging and casting footings adds labour and material.

Extras. A gutter with a downpipe, side screens, or a pre-run conduit for a light.

The written quote lists each element separately, so you can see where the money goes before any advance is paid.

How a car shed job runs

Book a site visit for ₹99; it is usually arranged within 24 to 48 hours and adjusted against the final bill if you go ahead. At the visit we measure the bay, check the boundary wall and the ground, and agree the shape and roof sheet. A written, all-inclusive quote usually follows within about two hours and remains valid for three days.

A 50% advance starts fabrication. Posts and beams are cut, welded, primed and finished at the workshop. On site, footings are cast first and allowed to set before the frame goes up; then the sheet and gutter are fitted. The balance 50% is due when the shed is complete.

For care, rinse the sheet with water rather than scrubbing it, clear the gutter before the rains and inspect the post bases yearly for rust. Browse the other shade structures in sheds and pergolas.

Common questions

Which is better for a car shed, polycarbonate or metal sheet?

Polycarbonate lets light through and stays quieter in rain, and multiwall sheet keeps the car noticeably cooler; it should be UV coated. Metal sheet blocks all sun and is very durable but is noisy in heavy rain and darker underneath. Insulated puff panel is a quieter, cooler metal option at a higher cost.

How much does a car parking shed cost in Gurgaon?

It depends on the number of bays, roof area, whether it is cantilever or four-post, the roof sheet and the groundwork for footings. A cantilever generally costs more than a four-post shed of the same size. We quote after a site visit, in writing and all-inclusive for the agreed scope.

Can a cantilever car shed take strong wind?

Yes, when it is designed for it. The overhang works like a lever, so the posts, beams and footings are sized for the length of the projection and for wind uplift, not just the weight of the sheet. That is why a cantilever uses heavier sections and deeper footings than a four-post shed.

Do I need permission for a car shed in front of my house?

In many gated colonies and societies, yes. Rules often cover structures in the front setback, height and colour. In society parking, a shed over an allotted slot normally needs written approval from the maintenance office. Check before booking fabrication so the work is not stopped midway.

Car shed banne mein kitna time lagta hai?

Fabrication usually takes about a week after the advance, depending on size. On site, footings are cast first and need time to set, then the frame and roof go up, typically over a couple of days. Rain and large multi-bay sheds can extend the timeline, which the written quote will state.
