Columns or cantilever?

A canopy on its own columns can span a wide yard, but the columns stand where trucks reverse, so they need bollards or kerbs to survive a misjudged turn. A cantilever hangs off the building's own frame and keeps the yard clear, but it can only project so far and the building's columns must be strong enough to carry it. Clearance, slope and water

Set the underside of the canopy above the tallest truck with its load, at the lowest point of the slope. The roof falls toward a gutter sized for a heavy monsoon downpour, with downpipes taken to a drain, not onto the bay. Gutters that are too small or choked are the usual cause of water pouring onto cartons.

Metal sheet or polycarbonate?

Metal sheet is tough and cheap over a working bay, but it is hot underneath and loud in rain, the shed noisy in rain problem. Polycarbonate lets daylight through and is quieter, but it needs UV-coated sheet and careful fixing, or it cracks around the screws. A first impression for buyers

Visiting buyers walk in under whatever covers the entrance. A glass canopy on steel brackets over the main door is a small structure that makes an old building look looked-after, and it keeps rain off visitors without darkening the front.

Before the survey

• NSEZ units arrange gate passes for the survey team, and later for steel and installers.
• Note the largest vehicle that uses the bay and how it turns.
• Mark drains and underground services in the yard, so columns avoid them.
