Shower door magnet not holding in Gurgaon: why the door won't stay shut
When a shower door's magnetic seal stops catching, the magnets usually aren't dead. More often the two strips no longer meet: the door has dropped or swung off line, a strip has slid on the glass, or scale and soap have built up between them. Re-align the door or re-seat the strips and it usually holds again.

How the magnetic catch works
Many hinged shower doors close against a fixed panel or a wall profile, and the two meet through a pair of plastic strips with magnets running inside them. One strip clips on the door's closing edge, the other on the fixed glass at an angle (often 90 or 180 degrees, depending on the layout). When the door swings shut, the magnets pull together and hold it, and the soft flaps seal the vertical gap. On an L-shaped enclosure in a compact Gurugram or Noida bathroom, this one strip pair is all that keeps the door from drifting open mid-shower.
The magnets themselves rarely lose much strength. When the door stops holding, something has stopped them meeting squarely.
The usual reasons, most likely first
The door has dropped or moved off line
If the hinges have loosened or their gaskets compressed, the door sags and its strip meets the fixed strip lower down or at an angle. The magnets touch only at one end, or not at all. Look at the top of the closing edge: if the door sits lower than the fixed panel, this is the cause. Shower door sagging goes into hinge-side causes.
A strip has slid along the glass
Magnetic strips are a push-fit on the glass edge, sometimes with a little adhesive. Heat and water loosen them, and they creep down the glass, so the two strips end up offset.
Scale and soap between the magnets
Hard water leaves a crust on the strip faces, and soap scum adds a layer. Even a thin build-up keeps the magnets apart enough to weaken the hold.
Self-closing hinges pulling the wrong way
Some shower hinges have a built-in return that brings the door to its closed position. If that cam is worn or set to a different angle from the magnets, the door hovers just short of the catch.
A broken or brittle strip
Old strips crack and the magnet inside can slip out or break. Then a new pair is the only fix.
| What you see | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Door stops a few mm short and drifts | Door dropped, strips offset | Re-level the door on its hinges |
| Strips line up at top, not at bottom | One strip has slid | Re-seat or re-fix the strip |
| Weak hold, white crust on strips | Scale and soap build-up | Descale the strips gently |
| Door hovers before the catch | Hinge return angle mismatched | Adjust or replace hinges |
| Strip cracked or magnet missing | Strip worn out | Replace with a matching pair |
Checks you can do
- Close the door slowly and watch where the two strips meet. Do they line up top to bottom?
- Compare the height of the door's top edge with the fixed panel beside it.
- Clean both strip faces with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth, then try again.
- Gently push each strip on the glass to see whether it moves.
How it's fixed and quoted
Magnetic catch problems are repair work, so there's no paid visit. Send a photo of the strips with the door closed, a wide shot of the enclosure and a short video of the door closing on WhatsApp. If it's only the strips, we'll match a new pair to your glass thickness and closing angle. If the door has dropped, the hinges are re-clamped or replaced first through the bathroom glass door hinge replacement, otherwise new strips won't line up either.
If you're redoing the bathroom, the slim profile shower enclosure with door starts from ₹1,100 per sq ft; the glass-to-glass hinge explainer shows how panels and doors connect.
Keeping it catching
- Wipe the strip faces each week so scale doesn't build up between the magnets.
- Don't hang towels or bags on the door; the extra weight drops it.
- Have hinge screws checked if the door starts to feel loose.
The magnetic strip is a seal too, so a weak catch often comes with water on the floor: see shower door leaking and worn shower seal strip. A photo of the strips on WhatsApp is the fastest start.
Common questions
Why won't my shower door stay closed?
Usually the magnetic strips on the door and the fixed panel no longer meet squarely. The door may have dropped on its hinges, one strip may have slid on the glass, or scale is keeping the magnets apart. The magnets themselves rarely lose much strength.
Can I replace just the magnetic strip on a shower door?
Yes. Magnetic strips are separate push-fit parts, sized to the glass thickness and the closing angle (often 90 or 180 degrees). If the door has dropped, though, the hinges need re-setting first, or the new strips won't line up either.
How do I clean shower door magnetic strips?
Use warm water, a mild soap and a soft cloth or old toothbrush to lift soap scum and scale from the strip faces. Avoid strong acids and hard brushes, which age the plastic. Wiping the strips weekly keeps the hold strong.
Shower ka darwaza khud khul jaata hai, magnet kharab hai kya?
Probably not. Usually the door has sagged slightly or one strip has slipped, so the magnets don't meet. Clean the strips first and check whether they line up. If not, send a photo and a video of the door closing on WhatsApp.
