Shower glass partitions for Delhi homes: DDA flats, builder floors and kothis

Delhi does not have one kind of bathroom. A DDA flat in Mayur Vihar, a rebuilt builder floor in Greater Kailash and a 1970s kothi in Rajouri Garden each ask something different of a shower glass partition; the wrong choice shows up as a door that hits the commode or a panel that will not fit up the stairs. Here is how the style is matched to the bathroom, and what it costs.

Three Delhi homes, three different bathrooms

DDA flats: small, often renovated in stages

DDA housing across Dwarka, Vasant Kunj, Sarita Vihar and East Delhi has compact bathrooms, many converted from Indian-style WCs, with little space between shower and WC. A frameless sliding shower partition is the usual answer because it needs no swing room. Where only a splash guard is wanted, a single fixed frameless shower partition keeps the floor dry at the lowest rate.

Builder floors: new bathrooms, bigger budgets

Stilt-plus-four builder floors now line South and West Delhi, from Defence Colony to Punjabi Bagh. Bathrooms are larger, often with a dedicated shower bay, so a frameless shower partition with a hinged door or an L-shape frameless enclosure fits well. Measure only after tiling and the mixer are done, never from the builder's drawing.

Older kothis: walls that are not quite straight

In houses extended and re-plastered over decades, walls lean, and frameless glass turns a few millimetres of lean into a visible tapering gap. The slim profile shower partition with door uses a thin aluminium frame that takes up that error, which is why it is often the better choice in an older house despite the higher rate.

A worked example: a 4 ft by 6.5 ft DDA bathroom

Take a typical DDA bathroom where the shower runs along the short wall, about 4 ft wide, with glass 6.5 ft tall: roughly 26 sq ft. As a frameless slider that comes to about ₹14,300. If the door can swing clear, a hinged frameless door on the same opening is about ₹13,000, and a fixed half-screen (say 2 ft wide, so 13 sq ft) is about ₹4,810. Getting the glass in: stairs, lifts and narrow lanes

Many Delhi builder floors have a small lift and a tight dog-leg staircase, and older DDA blocks have no lift at all. A tall toughened panel cannot be cut or bent past a tight landing, so the route from the gate to the bathroom is checked when we measure. If a panel cannot make the turn, the design is split into two pieces at that stage, not on installation day.

The Delhi water question
