Grills, Safety Doors, Windows & Glass in Paschim Vihar, Delhi

Paschim Vihar is a large West Delhi colony that grew quickly in the 1980s, built both by the DDA and privately. The Outer Ring Road divides it, and the DDA developed much of the eastern side as A, B and C blocks with group-housing flats and plots. Rohtak Road runs along its southern edge, with Paschim Vihar East and Paschim Vihar West stations on the Green Line.

Forty-year-old housing has a recognisable set of needs. The steel put in when families first moved in has rusted, the windows have warped, and bathrooms built with a curtain rail are being redone by the next generation.

Security metalwork: the most common Paschim Vihar request

Ground and first floors in the DDA blocks and plotted houses almost all have grills, and many are original. Signs it is time to replace rather than repaint:

• Rust has eaten through the bottom bar or the anchors in the wall.
• The grill moves when you pull it, which means the fixings have failed (see grill loose from wall).
• Brown streaks run down the plaster below it (rust stains on wall).
• You want an openable section for fire escape, which the old fixed grill does not have.

Group housing rules

In DDA group housing, the outside of the block is shared. Some RWAs ask that new grills follow the existing design line, and most have work hours. A short word with the RWA before the visit saves a redesign.

Windows: replace the frame, not just the glass

Original steel or early aluminium windows here often no longer close square. Replacing the glass alone rarely fixes the draught or the rattle. The usual route is a new aluminium sliding window or uPVC frame fitted into the existing opening, with mosquito mesh on the outer track. Bathrooms and the roof

A bathroom refresh usually swaps a curtain for glass. In a small DDA bathroom, a fixed frameless shower partition from ₹370 per sq ft often works without any door at all. Plotted houses with a roof add a polycarbonate terrace shed for shade, which needs a UV-protected sheet and a slope that drains away from the neighbour.

Balconies are the other common job. Old MS railings in the A and B blocks are often loose at the base or rusting through; an MS balcony railing replacement keeps the look, while SS304 removes the repainting. A railing wobbling is a safety matter and worth fixing before the next monsoon.
