Grills, Terrace Sheds, Windows & Glass in Shahdara and Dilshad Garden

Shahdara is one of the oldest settled areas east of the Yamuna, with a historic core of closely packed houses on narrow lanes and markets around them. Dilshad Garden, a few kilometres east near the Ghaziabad border, is a planned DDA colony divided into lettered blocks and pockets, each with its own market and parks, and mostly made up of DDA flats in the lower and middle categories. The Red Line connects them, with stations including Shahdara and Dilshad Garden, and the area is close to GTB Hospital and Vivek Vihar.

The two halves need similar things for different reasons. In old Shahdara, it is because houses are small, close together and built up floor by floor. In Dilshad Garden, it is because the DDA flats are ageing together.

Security first: grills, safety doors and gates

In dense lanes, ground floors open straight on to the street and windows face the neighbour a few feet away. Almost every house has grills, and most flat entrances have a steel safety door. What to ask for when replacing them:

• An MS safety door with a proper frame anchored into the wall, not just screwed to the old door frame.
• MS window grills with at least one openable section per room for emergencies.
• Primer and paint or powder coating on every piece; read mild steel and powder coating for why it matters.
• Locks that suit the use: a gate opened twenty times a day needs a different lock from a safety door (gate lock not working).

Terrace sheds on small houses

On a small plot, the roof is the only outdoor space, used for drying clothes, storage, water tanks and summer evenings. A polycarbonate terrace shed on an MS frame makes it usable through the summer and the monsoon. On tightly packed terraces, the details matter more than usual:

Dilshad Garden flats: windows and bathrooms

DDA flats here mostly have their original windows. Replacing them with an aluminium sliding window with mesh solves dust, rattling and mosquitoes together. Getting material in

In old Shahdara, many lanes are too narrow for a vehicle, and stairs inside the houses are steep. Steel is fabricated in sections and joined on site; long shed members and glass panels are sized for the route. The visit measures that route as carefully as the work itself.
