Worn shower door seal strip in Gurgaon: which one you have and how it's replaced
The clear strips clipped onto a shower door's bottom and edges stop water escaping through the gaps the door needs to swing. They harden, split and yellow with hot water, scale and cleaners, usually within a few years. Replacing them is quick, as long as the new strip matches the glass thickness and the gap.

What the seal strips actually do
A frameless shower door can't seal like a cupboard door. It needs small gaps, typically a few millimetres, at the bottom and along its edges so it can swing without the glass touching tile or the fixed panel. Clear PVC or polycarbonate strips push onto the glass edge to close those gaps. They're cheap, and they're consumables: in Gurugram and Noida's hard water, under daily hot showers, they rarely last as long as the glass and hinges around them.
Which strip have you got?
| Strip type | Where it sits | What it does | Signs it's worn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottom sweep (wiper) | Along the bottom edge of the door | Wipes water back in as the door closes | Fin split, curled or gone stiff; puddle outside |
| Bubble or drip seal | Bottom edge, sometimes with a drip lip | Seals the floor gap, sheds drips inward | Flattened bubble, yellowing, splits at ends |
| Magnetic seal pair | Closing edge of door and the fixed panel | Pulls the door shut and seals the edge | Door won't latch, water on closing side |
| Soft fin or flap seal | Hinge side, or between door and panel | Covers the vertical gap | Fin torn, hard or falling off |
If the magnetic edge is the problem, the page on a shower door magnet not holding goes deeper.
Why seal strips wear out
Hot water and heat
Plastic seals soften and lose their shape with heat, then go hard and brittle as plasticisers leach out. A shower used several times a day by a family wears them faster.
Hard-water scale
Groundwater-fed supplies in many NCR societies carry heavy minerals. Scale builds up in the fins, stiffens them and stops them flexing, so they leak even before they split.
Cleaning chemicals
Acidic descalers and bleach-based sprays clean the glass well but age plastic seals. Scrubbing the bottom sweep with a hard brush tears the thin fin.
The door has dropped
If the door sags, its bottom sweep drags on the floor and tears, or lifts and stops sealing. Replacing the strip alone won't last; the door has to be re-levelled first. See shower door sagging.
Self-checks before you order anything
- Run the shower and watch where water escapes: under the door, at the closing edge or at the hinge side.
- Close the door and look at the bottom gap. Is it even along the whole width?
- Feel the strip: a good one is soft and flexible; a worn one is stiff, cracked or yellow.
- Note the glass thickness, often printed on the strip packaging or measurable with a ruler (usually 8mm or 10mm on showers).
Replacing it, and how it's quoted
This is a small repair, handled from photos on WhatsApp with no paid site visit. Send a close-up of each strip, a wide photo of the door shut, and a short clip of the water escaping. From that we can match the strips and check whether anything else is causing the leak, such as a dropped door, failed silicone or a floor that slopes the wrong way.
Fitting means cutting the new strip to length, cleaning scale from the glass edge, pushing it on squarely and checking the door still closes freely. If the hinges are worn or the door has dropped, the bathroom glass door hinge replacement is done first. On new installs, the frameless shower partition with door starts from ₹500 per sq ft, which includes the seals.
Making new seals last
- Squeegee the glass and the strip after showers so scale doesn't build up.
- Clean seals with a soft cloth and mild soap, not a brush or strong acid.
- Replace them at the first sign of stiffness, before water starts damaging the bathroom floor outside.
A worn strip is one of several leak sources; shower door leaking covers the others, and black mould in shower silicone often comes with it. If you're choosing a new door, sliding vs hinged shower doors compares how each seals. See every bathroom fix in the glass repair catalogue, or shower cubicles in Noida for local work. Send a photo of the strip on WhatsApp and we'll match it.
Common questions
How often should a shower door seal be replaced?
There's no fixed schedule. In hard-water areas with daily hot showers, seals often stiffen or yellow within a few years. Replace them when they stop flexing, split, or water starts escaping, rather than waiting for a puddle to damage the floor outside the shower.
How do I know which shower seal strip to buy?
You need the strip type (bottom sweep, bubble, magnetic or fin), the glass thickness (usually 8mm or 10mm for showers) and the size of the gap it has to close. A photo of the old strip and the door shut usually tells us all three.
Why is water still leaking after I replaced the seal?
Usually because the door has dropped, so the new seal can't touch the floor evenly, or the leak is somewhere else: failed silicone, the hinge side, or a floor that slopes towards the door. Watch where the water escapes while the shower runs.
Shower ke darwaze ki neeche wali patti toot gayi, kya ye alag se milti hai?
Yes, the bottom strip is a separate part and can be replaced without touching the glass. It has to match your glass thickness and the gap under the door. Send a close-up photo of the old strip on WhatsApp and we'll find the right one.
