Scratched shower glass in Gurgaon: polish it, live with it, or replace it?
Light scuffs on shower glass can often be polished with a glass-polishing compound. Scratches you can catch with a fingernail can't be removed safely, because grinding toughened glass thins it and can weaken it. For deep or many scratches, the honest fix is a new toughened panel made to size.
First, is it really a scratch?
A lot of what people in Gurugram flats call scratches on shower glass is actually hard-water scale or etching: cloudy patches, spots or rings that don't wipe off. That's a different problem with a different answer, covered in hard water stains on shower glass. A true scratch is a line cut into the glass surface, and it looks the same wet or dry.
The fingernail test settles most cases: run a fingernail across the mark. If it glides over, it's a surface scuff or residue. If it catches in a groove, it's a real scratch.
How shower glass gets scratched
Scrubbing with the wrong tools
Steel wool, green scouring pads, abrasive powders and razor blades used to remove scale all leave fine scratches, often in swirls or straight lines where the cleaning stroke went. This is the most common cause.
Grit in the cleaning cloth
Sand from the floor or a dusty cloth turns a gentle wipe into sandpaper. NCR dust gets everywhere during renovation work in a society, and fine scratches appear across the whole panel.
Construction and installation damage
Tile cutting, grinding and welding near unprotected glass during fit-out can leave scratches, pits or fused specks. If the marks were there from handover, they likely came from the builder's work.
Jewellery, razors and shower hardware
Rings, a dropped razor, or a loose shower rail or soap tray can score the glass in one spot.

Why toughened glass limits the repair
Shower glass is toughened glass, heat-treated so its surface is under compression. That's what makes it strong and makes it break into small pieces rather than shards. Light polishing with a fine compound such as cerium oxide works only on the very surface. Grinding out a deeper scratch removes some of that compressed layer, can leave a visible lens-shaped dip, and may weaken the panel. That's why we don't recommend aggressive scratch-removal on toughened glass.
What you can safely try
- Clean the glass thoroughly first, so you're not polishing over grit.
- Use a glass-polishing compound with a soft felt pad or cloth, with light pressure, on a small area first.
- Stop if the area starts looking hazy or wavy.
- Never use a razor, metal scraper or power polisher near the glass edge.
Replacement: how it works and how it's quoted
If the scratches are deep, many or right at eye level, replacing the panel is often the only way to get clear glass back. A new panel is measured, cut and toughened to size, which commonly takes 7–10 days, then fitted with the existing hardware if it's in good condition. Avoiding new scratches
- Use a squeegee and microfibre cloth; no scouring pads.
- Rinse grit off the glass before wiping it.
- Protect glass during any bathroom renovation work.
