Replacing a stair railing in an old house
The hard part of a stair railing in an older Model Town house is the fixing, not the railing:
- Top fixing bolts each post into the tread. It needs enough tread depth and solid concrete below the stone, and drilling old marble can crack it if done carelessly.
- Side fixing bolts posts into the face of the stair stringer. It keeps the full tread width free and avoids drilling the stone surface, which is often the better choice on narrow or finished stairs.
- Wall-side handrail on brackets gives a second hand-hold, helpful for older family members.

Handrails people actually hold
A flat steel top on a railing looks neat but is uncomfortable to grip. A round SS tube or a shaped teak handrail is easier on the hand, warmer in winter and safer on a stair. Teak needs occasional polish; SS needs only a wipe.
SS304 or SS202 in North Delhi
Stainless steel comes in grades. SS304 holds up well through Delhi's monsoon; SS202 costs less but tends to develop brown spots, especially on balconies under trees, of which Model Town has many. Yes. Either the old railing is replaced with a taller one, or a rail is added on top of an existing parapet or railing if it is solid. For balconies used by children, raising the height is worth doing. We measure and suggest the option at the visit.
Is SS202 good enough for a balcony railing?
It is cheaper, but outdoors in Delhi it tends to show rust spots, especially under trees or where water sits. SS304 resists this far better and is the safer choice for balconies. Ask for the grade in writing in any quote.
