Replacing the Builder's Shower Cubicle in a Vatika City Flat, Gurgaon

Flats in Vatika City's towers on Sohna Road were handed over around a decade and more ago, and many bathrooms came with whatever the developer fitted: a framed aluminium cubicle with acrylic or thin glass sliders, or no screen at all. Owners renovating now usually want frameless toughened glass. Doing that in a large society in Sector 49, Gurugram, involves a few steps a fresh bathroom does not, starting with getting the old cubicle out cleanly.

Taking the old cubicle out

A framed cubicle is screwed to the walls through its side profiles and often sealed to the floor along a bottom sill. Removing it leaves a line of screw holes in the tiles and a band of old silicone. The holes can be filled with a matching grout or tile filler; where the new glass clamps land in the same place, they are re-drilled rather than filled. Under the old sill, tiles have sometimes stayed wet for years, and any loose ones are best re-fixed before the glass is measured.

What replaces it

All are 10mm Saint-Gobain toughened glass with SS304 fittings and a 1 year functional warranty on hardware. The service lift sets the panel size

In a tower, every panel travels in the service lift. A 7 ft door panel standing on its edge needs a lift car with enough diagonal height, and the lift has to be booked with the maintenance office for the time slot. Panel sizes are checked against the lift at the visit, because toughened glass cannot be cut down if it does not fit.

Hinges that last

Frameless doors either hang from the wall on wall-to-glass hinges or from a fixed panel on a glass-to-glass hinge. Good SS304 hinges hold a 10mm door without dropping; a hinge that later stiffens or will not return is covered under shower door hinge stuck.

• Give the maintenance office notice of the work and the workers' details.
• Book the service lift for both the removal and the installation days.
• Keep noisy drilling within the society's permitted hours.
