Sliding balcony door off its track: why it happens and how it's fixed in Gurgaon

A sliding door that comes off its track or drags usually has a broken or badly adjusted roller, or a bent or worn bottom track. The door is heavy, so don't force it back: secure it, and have the rollers and track checked. Most doors are fixed with new rollers and adjustment.

Aluminium sliding door with large glass panels opening onto a balcony

Balcony sliding doors in Gurugram flats are big: often two or three glass panels, each heavier than a person can comfortably hold. When one of them jumps its track, it can tilt inward or outward with no warning. So before the causes, the safety step.

What makes a sliding door leave its track

Broken or worn rollers

The whole weight of the panel sits on two rollers at its base. Plastic wheels crack, steel axles rust, and bearings seize after years of grit. A failed roller drops that corner of the panel, the panel tilts, and the other roller rides up and out of the track.

Rollers adjusted too low

Most door rollers have an adjustment screw. If the panel has sunk, it drags on the track and its top edge can clear the top guide, letting it swing free. This often follows a roller wearing down rather than breaking.

A bent, dented or worn bottom track

A track rail flattened by furniture, a trolley or years of a dragging panel lets the roller climb off. Aluminium track rails can also wear a groove into a ridge that the wheel no longer sits on.

Missing or loose top guides

The top channel keeps the panel upright. If its stops or guides are loose or missing, nothing prevents the panel from tipping as soon as the roller jumps.

Debris and water in the track

Sand, gravel from potted plants and monsoon mud can lift a roller over the rail. Balcony tracks get far more of it than window tracks.

Checks that are safe to do

  • With the panel still in its track, look at the bottom edge from the side. A visible tilt or a corner touching the rail means a roller has failed or sunk.
  • Clean the track: vacuum the grit and scrape out mud. Don't use oil.
  • Check the top channel for missing screws or guide blocks.
  • If the lock has stopped lining up, note it. It usually confirms the panel has dropped.

Repair it, or replace the door?

Most sliding doors that come off track only need new rollers, a repaired track section and proper adjustment. Replacement makes sense when the frame is a thin section that has bowed, the panels are single glass that bake the room in summer, the door leaks every monsoon, or you'd rather have a wider opening. A new aluminium sliding door with heavier-duty rollers and a deeper track is the like-for-like upgrade; a slide-and-fold door opens almost the full width if the balcony is used a lot. uPVC sliders seal well against dust and rain; see uPVC vs aluminium windows in Gurgaon, which covers doors too, and the uPVC window price guide for what moves the cost.

How FabWise handles it

Send a photo of the bottom corner of the panel, the track, and a short video if the panel can still move safely. We'll tell you whether it looks like rollers, track or frame. If a visit is needed, it costs ₹99 and is adjusted against the bill when you go ahead. Door repairs and new doors are quoted after the visit; we don't publish a rate for this work.

Prevention

Keep the balcony track clean, especially after dust storms and through the monsoon. Don't let the door slam into its end stop; that cracks rollers. Keep plant pots and their drainage off the track. If the door starts to drag or the lock stops lining up, adjust the rollers then, before the panel drops further.

Common questions

What do I do if my sliding door came off the track?

Stop using it and keep the panel closed and supported. Don't try to lift a heavy glass panel back in alone, because it can fall. Most doors come off track because a roller has failed or dropped, so the fix is usually new rollers and adjustment once the panel is lifted out safely.

Why is my sliding door dragging on the floor track?

The rollers under the panel are worn, broken or set too low, so the panel's bottom edge rubs the track. Most rollers can be adjusted with a screw at the base of the panel; if they're worn out, they need replacing. A dragging door is worth fixing early before it jumps the track.

Can sliding door rollers be replaced?

Yes, on almost all aluminium and uPVC sliding doors. The panel is lifted out, the old rollers removed and new ones fitted to suit the profile, then adjusted so the panel runs level and the lock meets its keeper. Replacement of the whole door is only needed if the frame or track is badly damaged.

Balcony ka sliding door track se nikal gaya, kya kare?

Leave it closed and don't push it. A heavy glass panel off its track can fall. Send a photo of the bottom corner and the track on WhatsApp. Usually the roller has broken or dropped, and new rollers with adjustment fix it without changing the door.

Should I replace my old sliding door with a slide-and-fold door?

Only if you want a wider opening to the balcony. A slide-and-fold door opens almost the full width but has more hinges and panels to maintain. If you're happy with the opening and only the rollers have failed, repairing or replacing the slider like-for-like is simpler.
