Folding glass doors that open a wall to the outside

A slide-and-fold door is a run of hinged glazed panels, usually three to seven, that slide on a top or bottom track and fold concertina-style to stack at one or both ends, clearing most of the opening. Frames are heavy aluminium or reinforced uPVC; glass is toughened, single or double glazed. Specified between a living room and a terrace, lawn, deck or poolside, and for restaurant and café fronts that open to the street in good weather. One panel can be set as a daily traffic door. The constraint is structural: the lintel or head must carry the weight without deflecting, or the panels bind. Measured on site and installed by one team.

A sliding door opens half a wall at best. A slide-and-fold door opens almost all of it: the glass panels fold up like a concertina and stack neatly to one side, joining the room to the terrace or lawn. It is popular in villas, penthouses and ground-floor builder floors across Gurugram and Noida, and in cafés that want an open front. We measure, check the structure above the opening, and build and fit the door with our own team.

How a slide-and-fold door works

The door is a set of panels joined by hinges. Each pair of panels runs on a carriage in a track, and as you push the end panel the set concertinas and stacks against the jamb. The stack is usually around the thickness of the panels times their number, so a five-panel door leaves a narrow bundle at one side and a clear opening the rest of the way.

There are two ways to carry the weight. Top-hung systems hang the panels from a track in the head, with a guide in the floor; the floor track can be nearly flush. Bottom-rolling systems run on rollers in a floor track, with a guide above; the lintel takes less load but the floor track is more prominent.

Panel count can be odd or even. An odd number, such as three or five, lets one panel act as a normal hinged traffic door, so you can step outside without folding the whole set. Panels can stack in or out, left, right or split.

For a simpler opening to a standard balcony, a sliding door is usually more economical.

Frame, glass and hardware choices

Aluminium is the usual frame for folding doors. It is stiff enough to keep tall panels square under their own weight and allows slimmer profiles, so more of the door is glass. Thermally broken aluminium systems insulate better. Finishes are powder coated or anodised in any colour, often black or grey on modern elevations.

uPVC folding systems exist and insulate well but have chunkier frames and practical limits on panel size.

Glass is toughened throughout, since every panel is at floor level and moves. A double glazed unit is worth considering on west- and south-facing openings, where afternoon sun on a large area of glass heats the room quickly in a Gurugram summer.

The hardware does the work: stainless steel or sealed bearing carriages, quality hinges, flush bolts on the folding panels and a multi-point lock on the traffic door. Cheaper sets wear quickly in dust and are the commonest reason folding doors become hard to move.

A pleated mosquito mesh can be fitted across a folding door opening; see mosquito mesh for the options.

Structure, levels and site conditions

Folding doors ask more of the building than other doors.

For a top-hung door, the head must carry the full weight of the panels without sagging. An RCC beam is ideal. A brick lintel or a wide opening in a renovated wall may need a steel section above the door, which we identify at the visit. Even a few millimetres of deflection can make panels bind.

The floor must be level along the full width. On a terrace, the outside floor should be lower and slope away so monsoon water does not run into the track; a drained sill helps where levels are tight.

In villas and independent houses in DLF phases, Nirvana Country or Sector 150-type plotted pockets of Noida, folding doors to lawns are straightforward. In penthouses, wind on high floors calls for robust locking and a well-sealed system. In cafés and restaurants on market roads, the door is opened and closed daily, so hardware quality matters more than finish.

Dust is constant in NCR, so a door with an accessible, cleanable track pays off over the years.

What decides the price of a folding door

We quote folding doors after measuring. There is no published rate, because the system and site affect the cost a great deal.

Opening size and panel count. More and taller panels mean more frame, glass and hardware.

System. Standard aluminium, thermally broken aluminium, or uPVC.

Hanging method. Top-hung or bottom-rolling, and flush or surface floor track.

Glass. Single toughened or double glazed, clear, tinted or reflective.

Hardware and locks. Carriage quality, flush bolts, multi-point locks.

Structural work. A steel lintel or making good a widened opening.

Finish. Standard or custom colour.

Size matters more than with most doors, because hardware cost rises with every extra panel, not just with the area of glass. A five-panel door costs noticeably more than a sliding door over the same opening.

The written quote breaks these out so you can weigh, for example, double glazing against the opening's orientation before you commit.

Timeline, installation and care

Book a site visit for ₹99, usually within 24 to 48 hours, adjusted against the final bill if you go ahead. We measure the opening, check the head, the floor levels and the outside fall, and agree panel count, stacking side and glass. A written, all-inclusive quote usually follows within about two hours and is valid for three days.

With a 50% advance, fabrication starts and the toughened glass is ordered to size; toughened glass production generally takes 7 to 10 days. Installation is careful work, as the frame must be dead square and level, and usually takes a day or two. The remaining 50% is due on completion.

Keep the tracks clean, especially through the dusty months; wipe the gaskets; and have the carriages checked if the panels start to drag. Browse other doors and windows in the windows and doors catalogue.

Common questions

What is the difference between a slide-and-fold door and a sliding door?

A sliding door has panels that slide past each other, so at most about half to two-thirds of the opening is clear. A slide-and-fold door has hinged panels that fold and stack at one or both sides, clearing almost the whole opening. Folding doors cost more and need a stronger head and level floor.

Are folding glass doors secure?

Good systems are. The folding panels lock with flush bolts top and bottom, and the traffic door uses a multi-point lock. Toughened glass is much stronger than ordinary glass. For ground floors and terraces, ask for multi-point locking and hinges designed so the pins cannot be removed from outside.

How much does a slide-and-fold door cost in Gurgaon?

It depends on the width and height, the number of panels, the frame system, the glass, hardware quality and any structural work above the opening. We do not publish a rate; we measure and send a written, all-inclusive quote, usually within about two hours of the visit.

Can a folding door be fitted to an existing opening?

Often yes. The head must be strong enough to carry the panels without sagging, and the floor must be level across the width. If the lintel is weak or the opening is being widened, a steel section may be needed above it. We check both at the site visit.

Folding door mein kitne panel hone chahiye?

It depends on the opening width and how wide you want each panel. Panels are typically kept to a width that is comfortable to handle. An odd number, such as three or five, allows one panel to work as an everyday hinged door. We suggest a layout after measuring.
