Aluminium window rattling in Gurgaon: finding the loose part and stopping it

An aluminium window rattles because something has play: the glass inside the shutter, the shutter inside its track, or the lock against its keeper. Loose glazing gaskets and flattened brush seals cause most of it, and both are cheap to replace.

Two-track aluminium sliding window with glass shutters and a central interlock

A rattling aluminium window is the sound track of many Gurugram apartments on a windy night: a tick every time a truck passes on the highway, a bang in a dust storm, a buzz when the AC compressor outside kicks in. The noise is a symptom of movement, and movement wears parts out, so it's worth tracking down rather than wedging with folded paper.

The short answer

Tap the glass, then the shutter frame, then the lock. Whichever one makes the noise is the part that's loose. Glass that buzzes needs new gaskets or beads. A shutter that knocks in its track needs new brush seals or rollers. A lock that clicks needs its keeper adjusted.

Where the rattle comes from

Loose glass in the shutter

The glass sits in the shutter section on a rubber gasket or a small glazing bead. Summer heat shrinks cheap PVC gaskets and they pull back from the corners, leaving the pane free to buzz. You'll hear a high, fast vibration rather than a knock.

Worn brush seals letting the shutter move

Brush (wool-pile) seals along the top and sides don't just keep dust out, they also hold the shutter steady in its channel. Once flattened, the shutter can rock in the wind and knock against the track walls with a dull clack.

Worn or undersized rollers

Rollers that have flat spots or have dropped in height let the shutter sit low and loose. Wind lifts it slightly and drops it back, which is the classic rhythmic knock in a storm.

A lock that doesn't pull the shutters tight

Many budget sliding windows use a simple crescent or touch lock. When its keeper is set too far away, it closes but doesn't draw the interlock together, so the shutters chatter against each other.

Thin section and a big pane

On a large opening fitted with a light section, the shutter itself flexes. That can't be cured with seals alone; the window was under-specified for its size and wind exposure.

Checks you can do safely

  • Press flat on the glass with your palm while the wind is blowing. If the noise stops, the glass is loose in its gasket.
  • Hold the shutter frame instead. If that stops it, the shutter is moving in its track.
  • Lock the window, then push the two shutters apart at the interlock. Visible movement means the lock isn't pulling tight.
  • Look at the brush seals with a torch. Flat, grey, matted pile should be fluffy and upright.

Fix it or change the window?

Gaskets, brush seals, rollers and locks are small parts, and replacing them usually silences a sound window completely. Think about a new window when the shutters are visibly flexing, when it also leaks or lets in heavy dust, or when traffic noise rather than rattling is the real complaint. A well-specified aluminium sliding window in a heavier section, or a gasketed uPVC window, fixes rattle, dust and noise together. The difference between window sections is covered in our glossary entry on aluminium sections, and soundproof windows for Delhi NCR explains what actually reduces road noise.

How FabWise sorts it out

Record ten seconds of the noise on a windy day with the camera close to the window, then a clear photo of the shutter edges and lock. Send both on WhatsApp. If a visit helps, it costs ₹99 anywhere in our Delhi NCR cities and is adjusted against the bill. Window repairs and replacements are quoted after the visit.

Prevention

Vacuum the tracks and brush seals every couple of months; packed dust makes seals flatten faster. Close and lock windows before a forecast dust storm rather than leaving them on the latch, and keep the outer weep slots clear so rollers don't sit in water.

Common questions

Why does my aluminium window rattle when it's windy?

Because a part has room to move. Most often the glass is loose in a shrunk gasket, or flattened brush seals let the shutter rock in its track. Press on the glass, then on the shutter frame, while it rattles; whichever stops the noise is the loose part.

How do I stop a sliding window rattling at night?

For tonight, lock the window fully and wedge soft foam between the shutter frame and the track, not against the glass. For a lasting fix, the brush seals, glass gaskets or rollers need replacing, depending on which part is moving.

Will new brush seals stop the rattle?

If the shutter is rocking in its track, yes, new brush seals of the right pile height usually cure it and cut dust too. They won't help a pane that buzzes inside its shutter; that needs new glazing gaskets or beads.

Hawa chalne par khidki khadakti hai, iska ilaj kya hai?

Find what's loose first: the glass, the shutter or the lock. Loose glass needs new rubber gaskets, a loose shutter needs new brush seals or rollers, and a loose lock needs adjusting. These are small repairs, and the window usually doesn't need replacing unless the frame itself flexes.
