Sliding window lock broken in Gurgaon: why it won't latch and what to replace

When a sliding window lock won't latch, either the lock body itself is broken or its keeper no longer lines up because the shutter has dropped or shifted. Re-aligning the keeper fixes many; a cracked die-cast lock simply needs replacing with the matching type for the profile.

Aluminium sliding window interlock where the shutter lock meets its keeper

A sliding window that can be pushed open from outside is a security problem on a ground floor in a Gurugram DLF phase house, and a monsoon problem on a tenth floor, where an unlocked shutter drifts open in a storm. Locks on sliding windows are simple parts, and the fault is nearly always visible once you know where to look.

The short answer

Close the window and watch the lock as you operate it. If the hook or latch moves but misses the keeper, the keeper or the shutter has shifted, and it's an alignment job. If the lever moves but the hook doesn't, or the lock body is cracked, the lock itself needs replacing.

What's usually behind a broken lock

1. The shutter has dropped

When rollers wear, the whole shutter sits a few millimetres lower. A hook lock that was set to catch at one height now passes under its keeper. The lock looks fine; it simply can't reach.

2. Loose or stripped keeper screws

The keeper is screwed into a thin aluminium section. Repeated slamming loosens it, the holes strip, and the keeper drifts or hangs off.

3. A cracked lock body

Cheap die-cast zinc locks go brittle in sun and crack at the pivot, usually after someone forced a stiff lever. Once cracked, they can't be repaired.

4. Dust in the mechanism

Touch latches and key cylinders clog with dust in the dry months. The spring can't push the latch out, so it stays retracted.

What you can safely check

  • Slide the shutter closed slowly and watch the hook against the keeper. A visible miss means alignment, not a broken lock.
  • Lift the shutter gently by its handle while closing. If the lock now catches, the rollers have dropped.
  • Check the keeper and lock screws with a screwdriver. Tighten gently; if they spin, the holes are stripped.
  • Blow dust out of touch latches and key cylinders and use a dry graphite or PTFE spray, not oil.

Repair or replace?

A lock is a small replacement, but it has to match the profile's lock pocket and the interlock depth, so a generic lock from the hardware shop often fits badly. If the window has dropped rollers, a cracked lock and a worn interlock all at once, or it's a ground-floor window that needs real security, it can be better to fit a new aluminium sliding window with a hook lock and a grill, or a uPVC window with multi-point locking. For street-facing ground floors, pair it with an MS window grill; our window grill designs and safety guide covers fire-exit-friendly options. Window prices are explained in the uPVC window price guide.

How FabWise handles a broken window lock

  1. Send a close photo of the lock and keeper, and a short video of the shutter being closed, on WhatsApp.
  2. We identify the lock type and whether it's alignment, rollers or the lock itself.
  3. If it needs a visit, that's ₹99, adjusted against the bill when the work goes ahead.
  4. You get a written quote; window parts and new windows are priced after the visit.

Prevention in a dusty, monsoon climate

Don't slam sliding shutters into the lock; slide them home and then latch. Vacuum the tracks so rollers last, because dropped rollers are the hidden cause of so many lock failures. After the monsoon, spray key cylinders with dry lubricant.

Common questions

Why won't my sliding window lock anymore?

Most often the shutter has dropped on worn rollers, so the lock's hook passes under the keeper. Lift the shutter slightly while locking; if it catches, the rollers or keeper need adjusting. If the lever moves but nothing happens, the lock body is broken and needs replacing.

Can I replace a sliding window lock myself?

You can if you find the exact same lock for your profile, since it must fit the lock pocket and reach the keeper. Generic locks often don't, and a badly fitted lock fails again quickly. On upper floors, don't remove shutters yourself to fit one; leave that to someone with the right access.

Is a sliding window lock enough security for a ground floor?

Usually not on its own. Sliding shutters can sometimes be lifted out of the track. For ground floors and terraces, a key lock or hook lock plus an MS grill, or a track stopper, is the safer arrangement, and it keeps the window usable for ventilation.

Khidki ka lock toot gaya, naya lock lagwana hai, kitna time lagega?

If the right lock for your window profile is available, fitting it is a short job once someone is on site. Send a close photo of the lock and keeper on WhatsApp first so we can identify the type, then we'll tell you whether it's a new lock, an adjustment or new rollers.
