Repair & Replacement
Glass Door Maintenance Checklist: Weekly, Monthly and Yearly Care
Five minutes a month keeps a glass door from sagging, slamming or breaking. A checklist for shower doors at home and cabin and shop doors at work, plus the signs that need a repair.

Glass door maintenance comes down to four things: keep the moving parts clean and dry, watch how the door closes, check the edges and fittings for movement, and fix small problems before they load the glass. A shower door in a Gurugram flat needs a squeegee daily and a hinge check monthly; an office cabin or shop door needs its floor spring, patch fittings and handle checked every month or two. The checklist below covers both.
Most glass door failures, from a slamming cabin door to a shattered shower panel, start as something small that was visible for weeks. That's the reason for a routine.
What should you check, and how often?
| How often | Shower door at home | Office cabin or shop door |
|---|---|---|
| After every use / daily | Squeegee the glass; leave the door open to dry | Wipe handle marks at the entrance |
| Weekly | Wipe the seal strips and the hinge plates | Clear grit from the floor plate; dry-mop near the door |
| Monthly | Check hinge screws, door alignment and magnet seal | Watch a full close from 90°; check handle and lock |
| Every 3–6 months | Look along every edge for chips; check silicone for mould | Check top and bottom patch fittings; check the gap at the floor |
| Yearly | Replace worn seal strips; descale hardware | Have the floor spring speeds set; check fixed panels and silicone |
How do you look after a shower door?
Daily: water and hard-water marks
Hard water is the main enemy of shower glass in Delhi NCR. The white film you see is mineral deposit left as water dries. A rubber squeegee used for 30 seconds after each shower stops most of it from forming. If the glass is already clouded, our guide to cleaning hard water from shower glass explains what works without scratching, and hard water stains on shower glass covers the stubborn cases.
Monthly: hinges, magnets and seals
- Open the door slowly. It should move evenly without a click, a scrape or a drop at the handle end.
- Look at the gap between the door and the fixed panel. If it is wider at the top than the bottom, or the other way round, the hinges are starting to sag.
- Close the door and check that the magnetic strip pulls it shut. A weak magnet usually means the door has moved out of line; see shower door magnet not holding.
- Run a finger along the bottom seal strip. If it is hard, split or curled, water will get out; see shower door leaking and shower seal strip worn.
Sliding shower doors
Sliders need the track and rollers kept clean. Soap and hair collect in the bottom guide; a soft brush once a week keeps it moving. If the door jumps or one end drops, it may have come off a roller: see shower slider off roller.
How do you look after an office or shop glass door?
The floor spring
Commercial frameless doors swing on a floor spring set into the floor. Keep the cover plate dry: mop around it, not into it. Once a month, open the door to 90 degrees and let go. It should slow down evenly, then latch gently. If it now slams, drifts or stops short, the valve needs adjusting or the unit is failing. An oily ring around the plate means the seals have gone. Our floor spring vs door closer guide explains how the unit works.
Patch fittings, handle and lock
- Check the top and bottom patches for movement on the glass. A patch that has slipped lets the door drop; see glass door dropped and dragging and patch fitting broken.
- Grip the handle and gently twist. Any play means the bolts are loosening; see glass door handle loose.
- Lock and unlock the door. A lock that needs force is often a door that has moved, not a faulty lock; see glass door lock not working.
- Look at the gaps between a double door's leaves. If they are uneven, see glass doors uneven gap.
Noise is a symptom
A squeak usually means a dry or dirty pivot; a knock or rattle usually means something is loose. Neither is just cosmetic. See glass door squeaking and glass partition rattling.
What should you never do to a glass door?
- Don't use an abrasive scrubber, steel wool or a blade on the glass; they leave permanent scratches.
- Don't hang anything off the door: towels on a shower door handle are fine, a loaded bag on a cabin door is not.
- Don't let the door swing into a wall or furniture. Fit a stopper.
- Don't over-tighten hinge or clamp screws to stop a rattle; crushing the gasket puts the glass under stress.
- Don't spray strong acid cleaners on metal fittings; they can mark SS304 and break down seals.
- Don't drill or try to trim toughened glass. It can't be cut after toughening.
Which cleaning products are safe?
| Surface | Safe to use | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Toughened glass | Water, mild soap, vinegar solution, microfibre cloth, rubber squeegee | Scouring pads, steel wool, razor scrapers |
| SS304 hinges and patches | Mild soap, soft cloth, dry afterwards | Bleach and strong acid descalers left on the metal |
| Silicone joints | Mild soap, soft brush, keep dry | Picking at mould with sharp tools |
| Floor spring cover plate | Dry cloth, vacuum grit from the gap | Mopping water into the pit |
Black spots in silicone are mould that has grown into the sealant. Surface cleaning lightens it but rarely removes it; the fix is to cut out and re-seal. See partition silicone black mould.
When is it time for a repair rather than maintenance?
- Oil around a floor spring plate or running down an overhead closer.
- A door that has dropped and now scrapes the floor or the frame.
- A hinge that is stiff, stuck or visibly bent; see shower door hinge stuck.
- Any chip on a glass edge, especially near a hinge or patch.
- A door that slams even after the speed has been adjusted.
These are jobs for the repair and replacement team: floor machine repair for commercial doors, bathroom glass door hinge replacement for shower doors, and broken toughened glass replacement when a panel has already gone. If you manage a building, our pages for housing societies and retail shops cover common-area and storefront doors.
Repairs are quoted from photos and videos rather than a paid visit, in Gurugram, Noida, Greater Noida and the rest of Delhi NCR. Film the door opening and closing and send it on WhatsApp.
Common questions
How often should a glass door be serviced?
Check it yourself monthly and have the hardware looked at about once a year. A shower door needs a quick hinge and seal check each month. A busy office or shop door on a floor spring benefits from a speed and patch check every few months, because it is opened far more often.
How do I stop my glass shower door from sagging?
Don't hang weight on the door, don't let it swing into the wall, and check the hinge screws monthly. If the gap to the fixed panel has become uneven, have the hinges adjusted or replaced before the door starts rubbing. Rubbing puts point stress on the glass edge.
What is the best way to clean a toughened glass door?
Use water with mild soap or a vinegar solution and a microfibre cloth, then squeegee or wipe dry. Avoid scouring pads, steel wool and razor scrapers, which scratch permanently. Keep strong acid cleaners off SS304 fittings and silicone joints, and dry the hardware after cleaning so water spots don't build up.
Office ka glass door awaaz kar raha hai, kya karein?
A squeak usually means a dry or dirty pivot, and a knock or rattle usually means a loose patch fitting, handle or panel. Check the handle and patches for play. If the noise continues, film the door opening and closing and send it on WhatsApp so the repair can be quoted.
Can I adjust a floor spring myself?
Small speed changes are made with the valve screws on the unit, usually under the cover plate, a little at a time. If the door is leaking oil, has dropped, or slams even after adjusting, the unit needs a technician, and a leaking floor spring is normally replaced rather than repaired.
