Noisy rolling shutter in Gurgaon: what the screech, grind or bang means

A noisy rolling shutter is usually dry or dusty side guides, a weak or dry spring in the barrel, or bent slats catching as they roll. Cleaning the guides and lubricating them correctly quiets most shutters; a grinding barrel or bent slats need a technician.

Galvanised rolling shutter half open over a shop entrance

At 7 a.m. in a residential market in Gurugram or Noida, a shop shutter going up sounds like an alarm for the whole street. Shop owners get used to it, but neighbours don't, and RWAs do complain. A noisy shutter is also a shutter that's wearing out faster. Each sound points to a specific cause.

The short answer

Screeching or squealing comes from slats rubbing dry, dusty guides. Grinding from the top usually means the barrel's bearings or spring are dry or worn. A bang or clatter on the way up or down means a bent slat, a loose end lock or a shutter that's dropping too fast because the spring is weak.

Why shutters get noisy

Dust in the guides

NCR dust settles in the vertical guide channels. Mixed with old grease, it forms a gritty paste that the slats drag through.

Wrong lubricant

Thick grease or engine oil in the guides holds dust and makes the problem worse within weeks. Guides need a light, dry-type lubricant.

Spring losing tension

The torsion spring inside the barrel balances the shutter's weight. As it weakens, the shutter feels heavier going up and drops hard coming down, which is when the bang happens.

Bent slats

A car bumper, a pushed trolley or forcing a jammed shutter can bend a slat. It then catches in the guide every time it passes.

Worn barrel bearings

The barrel turns on bearings or bushes at each end. Dry or worn, they grind.

What you can safely do

  • Brush and vacuum the guide channels top to bottom.
  • Wipe out old grease with a dry cloth, then use a silicone spray or dry PTFE lubricant in the guides.
  • Raise and lower the shutter slowly and watch for a slat that catches or bulges.
  • Note whether the shutter feels much heavier than before when lifting by hand.

Repair, upgrade or replace?

Guide cleaning, spring tensioning, bearing service and slat replacement are all repairs. Replace the rolling shutter when slats are rusted through, the guides are badly bent or you want a quieter perforated or polycarbonate shutter. Many shopkeepers also move to motorised operation, which opens more smoothly and at a controlled speed. Our manual vs motorised rolling shutter guide covers the trade-offs. If the shutter is stuck rather than noisy, read rolling shutter stuck. For galvanised and coated slats, see hot-dip galvanising.

How FabWise handles a noisy shutter

Send a video of the shutter going up and down with sound, plus a photo of the guides and barrel cover, on WhatsApp. We'll tell you whether it's a guide clean, a spring service or a slat. If a visit is needed in Gurugram, Noida or another Delhi NCR city we cover, it's ₹99, adjusted against the bill; shutter work is quoted after the visit. Shops can see how storefront work runs on retail shops in Noida.

Prevention

Clean and lubricate guides every two to three months, more often in the dust-storm season. Lift and lower the shutter evenly with both hands, not by yanking one side. Don't let vehicles park against it. Get the spring checked once a year.

Common questions

How do I make my rolling shutter less noisy?

Start with the guides: brush out dust, wipe away old grease and apply a silicone or dry PTFE lubricant. That cures most squealing. Grinding from the top drum or banging when closing means the spring or bearings need servicing by a technician.

Should I put grease in shutter guides?

Avoid thick grease and engine oil. They hold dust and form a gritty paste that makes the shutter noisier and stiffer within weeks in Gurgaon's dusty air. Use a light silicone spray or dry PTFE lubricant after cleaning the guides.

Why does my shutter bang when it closes?

Usually the spring has lost tension, so it no longer balances the shutter's weight and the shutter drops fast at the end. Spring re-tensioning or replacement is a technician job, because the spring stores a lot of energy.

Shutter kholte waqt bahut awaaz karta hai, kya karein?

Clean the side channels and use a silicone spray instead of grease. If it still grinds at the top or bangs when closing, the spring or bearings need servicing. Send a video with sound on WhatsApp and we'll tell you the fix.

Is a motorised shutter quieter than a manual one?

Usually, yes. A motor raises and lowers the shutter at a steady, controlled speed, so there's no banging at the end of travel. Guides still need cleaning, and the slats still make some noise, but the overall sound is much gentler.
