Rolling shutters for shops, garages and godowns

A rolling shutter is a curtain of interlocking steel laths that coils onto a spring-balanced barrel in a box above the opening, running in vertical side guides. Laths are galvanised steel, usually painted or powder coated, with perforated or grille laths where a lit display must stay visible after closing. Operation is manual push-up for small openings, gear-operated by a handle for heavier ones, or motorised with a tubular or side motor and remote. Specified for shop fronts, showrooms, garages, godowns and service areas. The barrel spring must be matched to the curtain's weight, or the shutter becomes hard to lift and wears its guides. Measured on site and installed by one team.

Every shop in a Gurugram or Noida market closes with a rolling shutter, and most shopkeepers have one that groans, sticks halfway, or takes two people to lift. A rolling shutter made to the right size, with a spring balanced to its weight, lifts easily and runs for years. We make and fit manual, gear-operated and motorised shutters for shops, garages and godowns, and add motors to the right kind of existing shutter.

How a rolling shutter is made

A rolling shutter has four main parts.

The curtain is a set of interlocking steel strips called laths, rolled from galvanised steel sheet, commonly in gauges chosen to suit the width and the security required. Wider openings need a heavier gauge so the curtain does not bow.

The barrel is a shaft above the opening onto which the curtain coils, with springs inside that counterbalance the curtain's weight so it can be lifted by hand. Springs matched to the weight are the difference between a shutter that lifts smoothly and one that fights you.

The guide channels on each side keep the curtain in line and resist forcing.

The bottom rail carries the locks, usually at both ends for security, and seals the gap at the floor.

A hood or box can enclose the coiled curtain for a neat look. Shutters are finished in primer and paint or powder coat; galvanised laths resist rust better in the monsoon. If your current shutter jams, see rolling shutter stuck.

Manual, gear or motorised operation

Manual (push-up) shutters are lifted by hand with the spring doing most of the work. They suit typical shop widths and are simple, cheap and easy to service.

Gear-operated shutters use a handle and gearbox to wind the barrel. They suit wider, heavier shutters, such as godowns and wide showroom fronts, where the curtain is too heavy to push up comfortably.

Motorised shutters use a tubular motor inside the barrel or a side-mounted motor, operated by a switch or remote. They suit large openings, frequent use and owners who would rather not bend down to the lock every evening. A manual override lets the shutter be operated during a power cut, and a battery backup unit is available on many systems.

There are also curtain choices. Solid laths give full security and privacy. Perforated laths have small holes so a lit display remains visible at night and air can pass. Grille (see-through) shutters use a link pattern for maximum visibility, common in malls.

Many existing manual shutters can be motorised, provided the curtain and barrel are in good condition.

Shutters for market shops, garages and godowns

The commonest job is a shop front on a market road or in a commercial complex: Sector 18 in Noida, the sector markets of Gurugram, Sohna Road, Old Gurgaon and the DLF phase markets. Here the shutter sits in front of a glass shopfront and is opened and closed daily. A perforated or grille shutter lets the window display be seen after closing, and a hood or ACP cladding above it hides the coil box.

Garages of independent houses and builder floors usually want a motorised shutter so the car can be driven in without getting out. Godowns and warehouses in Udyog Vihar and Noida's industrial sectors need wide, heavy shutters, often gear-operated or motorised.

For a showroom, the shutter is often installed with a toughened glass shop front with door behind it.

In malls and complexes, shutter type and colour may be specified by the management, and installation can be limited to certain hours. Check these rules before ordering so the shutter matches what the building allows.

What decides the price of a rolling shutter

Shutters are priced on size and specification, and we quote after measuring rather than publishing a rate.

Size of the opening. Width and height set the area of the curtain and the size of the barrel and springs.

Lath type and gauge. Solid, perforated or grille, and thicker gauges for wide or high-security openings.

Operation. Manual, gear or motorised, and the motor's capacity, remote and backup.

Finish. Galvanised, painted or powder coated.

Hood or box. An enclosure for the coil.

Removal of an old shutter. Taking out and disposing of the old one.

Fixing conditions. Strong RCC jambs and lintel make fixing straightforward; weaker walls may need extra steel.

Of these, operation makes the largest single difference: a motor and its controls add a clear step over a manual shutter of the same size, and a gear unit sits between the two.

The written quote lists each item, so you can compare manual with motorised on the same opening before deciding.

Visit, installation and maintenance

Book a site visit for ₹99, usually within 24 to 48 hours, adjusted against your bill if you go ahead. We measure the opening, check the lintel and jambs, and discuss lath type and operation. A written, all-inclusive quote usually follows within about two hours of the visit and is valid for three days.

A 50% advance starts fabrication: laths are rolled and cut to width, the barrel and springs are sized, and the guides are made. Installation usually takes a day for a typical shop shutter, and it can often be planned outside trading hours. The remaining 50% is due on completion.

Keep the guide channels clean of dust and grit, lubricate them lightly with a silicone spray rather than heavy grease, and have the spring tension checked if the shutter becomes heavy. Browse facade services in the facades and shutters catalogue, or the facades and shutters in Noida page.

Common questions

How much does a rolling shutter cost in Gurgaon?

It depends on the opening size, the lath type and gauge, manual, gear or motorised operation, the finish and whether there is a hood. We do not publish a rate; we measure and send a written, all-inclusive quote, usually within about two hours of the visit.

Can my existing manual shutter be motorised?

Often yes, if the curtain, guides and barrel are in good condition and the size suits an available motor. A tubular motor goes inside the barrel or a side motor is fitted to it. If the curtain is bent or rusted through, replacing the shutter is usually the better investment.

Perforated or solid rolling shutter: which is better for a shop?

A solid shutter gives the most security and privacy. A perforated shutter has small holes so a lit display stays visible after closing and air can circulate, which suits retail fronts. Grille shutters give the most visibility and are common in malls.

Why is my rolling shutter so hard to lift?

Usually the barrel springs have lost tension or were never matched to the curtain's weight, or the guide channels are full of dust and grit. Dented laths and a bent bottom rail also cause sticking. Cleaning and re-tensioning fixes many shutters; badly damaged curtains need replacement.

Motor wala shutter light jaane par kaise khulega?

Motorised shutters usually have a manual override, such as a chain or crank, so the shutter can be opened during a power cut. Many systems also offer a battery backup unit that runs the motor for a few cycles without mains power. We discuss which option suits your use at the visit.
