uPVC door dropping in Gurgaon: why it sags and how it's put right
A uPVC door drops when its heavy glass sash pulls on the hinges and the glass isn't packed to carry the weight into the frame. Most dropped doors are fixed by adjusting the hinges and re-packing the glass; a twisted or unreinforced sash needs replacing.

A hinged uPVC door to a balcony or terrace starts life closing with a soft thud and a smooth lift of the handle. A couple of years later in many Gurugram flats you need to lift the handle hard to lock it, the bottom corner catches on the threshold, and daylight shows along the top. The door has dropped.
The short answer
The latch-side corner of the sash has sunk. Usually it's because the hinges have worn or loosened, or the glass inside the sash was never packed to transfer its weight diagonally to the hinge side. Hinge adjustment and correct toe-and-heel packing of the glass fix most doors in one visit.
Why uPVC doors drop
1. Glass not packed correctly
In a uPVC sash the glass is a structural member. Plastic packers placed at specific points under and beside the glass push the sash corners into shape. If they were missing or put in the wrong places, the sash slowly sags into a parallelogram.
2. Hinges adjusted to their limit or worn
Most uPVC door hinges adjust up-down and side-to-side with an Allen key. Over time the bearings wear and the hinge loses height. Sometimes the previous fitter already wound the adjustment fully out to hide a packing problem.
3. Screws pulling out of the frame
Hinges should screw through the uPVC into the steel reinforcement inside. If the screws only bite plastic, they pull loose under the door's weight.
4. Missing or thin steel reinforcement
uPVC profiles need galvanised steel inside them for doors. Unreinforced or lightly reinforced sashes bend in summer heat on a south- or west-facing wall.
5. Something hung on the door
Children swinging on an open door, a heavy wind slamming it, or bags hung on the handle all add up.
Checks you can do
- Close the door and look at the gap around the sash. A gap that's wide at the top on the lock side and tight at the bottom confirms a drop.
- Look at the bottom corner on the lock side for scuff marks on the frame or threshold.
- Check the hinge screws with a screwdriver; loose screws are an easy partial fix.
- Lift the door slightly by the handle while closing it. If it now locks easily, adjustment and packing will likely cure it.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Must lift handle to lock | Sash dropped a few mm | Hinge adjustment |
| Bottom corner scrapes threshold | Sash dropped and racked | Re-pack glass, then adjust hinges |
| Hinge screws loose or spinning | Fixing missed the steel | Re-fix into reinforcement |
| Sash visibly bowed | Weak or missing reinforcement | New sash or new door |
| Drops again soon after adjustment | Glass packing never corrected | Proper toe-and-heel packing |
Repair or replace?
Packing, hinge adjustment and new hinges are repairs, and a properly reinforced door should last a long time after them. Replacement makes sense if the sash is bowed, the profile is unreinforced, or the door also leaks at the threshold. For balcony openings that get heavy use, many owners switch to a aluminium sliding door, which carries its weight on rollers in a track rather than on hinges, or a slide and fold door for a wide opening. For hinged openings, a properly specified uPVC window and door system with matched hinges is the answer. The uPVC window price guide explains what affects price.
How FabWise handles it
Send a video of the door being closed and locked and a photo of the gaps around it, on WhatsApp. If it needs a visit, that's ₹99 anywhere we cover in Delhi NCR, adjusted against the bill if you go ahead. Door adjustment and replacement are quoted after we've looked at the sash, reinforcement and hinges.
Prevention
Fit a door stay or stopper so wind can't slam a balcony door open against its hinges. Don't hang weight on the handle. Get the hinges checked whenever locking starts to need a lift; small adjustments early stop the sash racking.

Common questions
Why has my uPVC door dropped?
The latch-side corner has sunk, usually because the hinges have worn or loosened, or the glass wasn't packed to carry its weight into the frame. Heavy double-glazed sashes make it worse. Adjusting the hinges and correctly packing the glass fixes most dropped doors.
Can I adjust uPVC door hinges myself?
Many hinges have Allen-key adjustment for height and side-to-side, and small tweaks are possible. But if the door keeps dropping after adjustment, the glass packing is wrong, and that needs the beads and glass handled properly by a technician.
Why do I have to lift the handle to lock my uPVC door?
Because the sash has dropped and the locking points no longer line up with the keeps on the frame. Lifting the handle raises the sash back into line. Forcing it this way every day wears out the gearbox, so get the drop fixed with a hinge adjustment.
uPVC darwaza neeche baith gaya hai, theek ho sakta hai?
Usually yes. Most sagging uPVC doors need hinge adjustment and correct packing of the glass, not a new door. Replacement is needed only if the sash itself is bent or has no steel reinforcement. Send a video on WhatsApp and we'll tell you which it is.
